I hate the resulting shame even more than I hate the loss of control.

Anime Wrap-Up Time!:

Goblin Slayer: After its brutal and controversial first episode, Goblin Slayer settles in to be a perfectly-serviceable, but nothing special, series. It kind of feels like they really went over the top on the first episode to get everyone talking about the series (there's no such thing as bad publicity) and then just produced a perfectly good sword-and-sorcery fantasy series. I'm not unhappy I watched it, and I'll probably watch a few more episodes as they trickle in, but all in all, nothing where I'm eagerly anticipating the next episode/installment.

Yup, it has it's moments but I find your assessment pretty spot on. It does feel like it kind of 'hyped' how dark it was going to be and then just stayed kind of...'gloomy'. Still appreciated the darker characterization, letting monster be 'monsters' and the overall more muted or morbid tone - maybe 'be merry for tomorrow we die' would be a better way of describing it...

It is the dawn of the new FAWTL. The old one is gone forever, sunk by the overwhelming mass of data placed upon it. But there is hope! A new FAWTL appears, one with more hope and promises, fertile land ripe for claiming! It is time for me to step out of the shadows. Fate has given me a chance for a voice. I will cease my silent observations of the threads and speak out now. I reveal myself to the world!

Hey guys! It's me, Odd Fellow! Yeehaw!

Welcome.

If you really read all the FaWtL threads, that's some epic lurking.

It was hardly epic lurking. It was more like taking occasional peeps at FAWTL 5 and giggling to myself a bit as I pretend I'm a part of a conversation

True. But there could be. And if there is, there might be cake. And if there is cake, it might be buttermilk red velvet. And if it is buttermilk red velvet, then none of you will stand a chance at getting any of it as I will devour it all in one mighty gulp.

Unless it has cream cheese icing on it. Then I scrape that off and let you all fight over it while I eat the cake.

yup.

Bokkens have an edge.

I mean, there's a definite front and back and they are treated as if they have an edge.

Shinai don't, though, IIRC.

Neither do singlesticks.

Lightsabre duels always resemble stick-fights to me (not a bad thing in itself)

In other news, Hermione ran her first game last night after dinner.
She opened the gaming cabinet, assigned us each minis, told us what our character was/could do, then pulled out a notebook in which she'd written a very short adventure and a double-sided map. Full color.

I was an elf rogue who could transform into an Ewok.
Val was an Air Elemental named "Mental" who had a gargoyle companion. Also he can transform into a giant spider.
Hermione (as NPC) and WW were both CG gnoll clerics. WW could transform into a king cobra and Hermione's NPC could transform into some other kind of reptilian.
The first half of the game concerned fighting evil giant salamanders on an island in a boiling lake of lava "one and a half times as wide as our house". The second half (after we found the hidden staircase) was about figuring out what was illusion and what wasn't and dispelling it.
She did a damned fine job for her first try.

It turns out blowing snow for 25 hours in less then two days is a really good workout.

To be honest I never tried. I write occasional side quests and alter published material but never came up with something new.

My brothers refused to play published adventures growing up, and then I couldn't afford them for 3.5, it wasn't until I started getting into Pathfinder that I started investing in adventures.

Started buying APs with Kingmaker and have hardly stopped since (I skipped Giantslayer).

I didn't start subscribing until Hell's Rebels.

(1) Condolences, LM, that sucks!

(2) I just got a PM from someone with no posting history, no profile, nor any favorites, asking me for "school advice". Nooooo... this couldn't possibly be some kind of phishing scheme, could it?

(3) Until proven otherwise, I am making the assumption that Odd Fellow is Gary's AI bot. Because that works for me.

(4) LM, congrats on Hermione's first run! I wish Impus Major would get his act together and run MORE THAN TWO TOTAL SESSIONS OF A CAMPAIGN!

(5) After many years of GM'ing, I've come to the conclusion that homebrew is significantly easier than APs, because you don't have to deal with the author's bizarre rulesets or story lines. Think up a few encounters, build a story around them that progresses the overall plotline, add NPCs as necessary, integrate them into your existing world, and run. In APs you have to familiarize yourself with someone else's world, which for me is significantly harder.

(6) Yesterday I went shopping. 24 frozen lunches, 2 frozen pizzas, and a gallon of ice cream later and I am convinced that the new fridge uses Tardis technology. It's only 1" taller and 3" deeper than the previous fridge, yet all that stuff didn't even half fill the freezer. And a stupid excess of Chinese food from New Year's Day didn't even fill a shelf. It's scary huge! And tomorrow we get a water hook-up! Woot!

(7) I finished the major drywalling in WhimseyShire over the break. Now it's just the whole, "Use mud and tape to make it look decent and then paint it."
That should only be another 2 years...

Particularly missed you and Goth Bard and the Impii on New Years Eve/Day.

I'm bored. WW went to work, it's 33 degrees and pissing down rain here (there are ponds of water all throughout my yard and garden), the small ones are still asleep, and I'm waiting for the plumbers to show up (any time from 47 minutes ago to an hour and 13 minutes from now) to repair the leak in the small ones' bathroom. (Water is coming out at the place where the fill line comes out of the floor.)

Speaking of plot holes, Mrs Sunrise and I finished S7 of Game of Thrones last night, and...

Spoiler:
Near the end, Jon Snow & company go up beyond the Wall again to capture a live zombie. While trekking thru a snowstorm, they get ambushed by a zombie bear and one of their redshirts bites the dust. Now it's been established and Jon knows that dead folks beyond the Wall will rise as zombies if not burned, so I expected the next scene to be them returning south again, all angsty what with their redshirt being zombified but too useful to smash.

But no, the next scene is Jon & company trying to sneak up on an entire army of zombies in order to capture one. No redshirt zombie, no burned redshirt. Just a huge plot hole, considering the death and mayhem that follows.

Oh and it's been like four seasons since a primary character died. I fell in love with aSoIaF because of Martin's willingness to sacrifice characters for a good story, not because I want another Hollywood high fantasy. I have WoT for that. ;)

It was a low-key affair, with lots of Telestrations because letting me and Impus Minor draw anything inevitably leads to hilarity, but you were definitely missed!

Our summer plans are still gelling (Shiro has to take a month-long sabbatical from his job, so we're trying to coordinate a 2-4 week trip to Europe with him and Hi, but *we* actually have to worry about affording such a thing), but let us know when your Oregon trip is and we'll see whether we can't do at least a weekend in Ashland to meet up with you. The current plan is, the kids and I leave Texas the day after Father's Day and drive to Kansas City so I can see my favorite cousin (Hermione's godfather, and the father of my godson) and his family, then drive west from there, getting to Oregon on the 20th of June. Then we'll be there through the end of July. At some point toward the end of our stay, WW will fly out to meet us, and we'll all drive back together, stopping in the Bay for a day or two, and probably Tucson and Carlsbad on the way home. I don't know if I have to be back at work on August 5th or 12th.

Awesome! And yeah, back when I was teaching I always preferred the "get paid all year" plan because it let you plan accordingly. Having to be financially responsible enough to plan your summers was... hard.

(And for clarity on my previous post, Shiro and Hi are both at points in their lives where they can just say, "Oh, boy! A 4-week trip to Europe! Let's go!" Considering I have to save up for at least a year to make a similar trip, I am immensely jealous of that fiscal freedom... And yes, yes, I know. "Cry me a river, Tech Boy!")
