Not that I've seen reported, but my experience means nothing for this specific issue. To really dive into the issue would require delving into about 300 years of a very, very tense and still hotly-debated socioeconomic history that would see Fritzy lay waste to us all.

Hi all, it's been a few days, what did I miss?

I'm reading The Hero with a Thousand Faces (the origin of the Monomyth), and it's really useful for story brainstorming. But I am not a fan of the writing style. Just tell me what you mean, don't start every chapter with the flowery woowoo metaphors...

Ironfang invasion has been pretty hard on animal companions and familiars.

I've never killed that many animal companions or familiars before =(

Why do pcs take archetypes like bodyguard or protector(for familiars), that directly put their animal companions or familiars in harms way?

Protector Familiar requires line of sight for its body guard to work...then a wandering chimera incinerated it with its breath weapon.

Bodyguard gives the animal companion diehard, sort off...

At 3rd level, a bodyguard can always act in a surprise round (though it remains flat-footed until it acts). As long as its master is adjacent, a bodyguard remains conscious (though it becomes staggered) when its hit points fall below 0. While below 0 hit points, the bodyguard loses 1 hit point per round but gains a +2 morale bonus on attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks, dying only if its hit points reach a negative total equal to its Constitution score plus its master’s class level.

The next hit by the BBEG, while the poor deer was already negs, was a crit.

The racism towards asians in America, from my conversations with friends of such persuasion, exists, but is not nearly as bad or overt as towards black and latin americans...especially in the south.

I can't tell you how many times a stranger has walked up to me and randomly started spouting some racist crap, because I am very pale, goofy, and kinda look like Hitler's Wet Dream. Then I would pull out my wedding photos (my ex-wife is black), and you'd see backpedaling so fast..."Well, I didn't mean, er, um, that is to say, not all..." and so forth. Seriously, they just assume because you're also white in the south you must be a racist, too.

It's funny...My brother was talking about this recently. His girlfriend is black and he gets the same thing, because he looks very German, only he's a lot less of a pacifist than I am (as well as being almost six and a half feet tall and having a lot more muscle than me), so asses tend to get kicked after they pull that shit with him.

I think I never learned to hate people on the outside because I had so few friends as a kid, I just...got along with whoever was nice to me. I was bullied a lot, and a bit of an outsider, and it just seemed one more stupid reason for people to be bullied.

By comparison, racism towards asians tends to be much more subtle. There's not a huge population in the areas I've lived, though.

Familiar will take 200gp* level to replace so I'd argue not so. Animal companions I think in PFS if you replace it comes only with the tricks that your druid level gives you and not all of them so I don't think it's that cheap either. You lose all your other tricks.

By comparison, racism towards asians tends to be much more subtle. There's not a huge population in the areas I've lived, though.

It also tends to be more intellectual. Asians are assumed to be smart but weak, good at math and science but hopeless at physical pursuits, and Asian women are highly fetishized and a lot of assumptions made about stuff connected with that.

Also apparently there's a stereotype about them being bad drivers or something? Only just learned that the other day thanks to a bumper sticker self-deprecating its owner saying: "Warning: Female Asian Driver. Hope you have insurance!"

But yeah. It's definitely not the same kind of racist response that would risk a call to the cops or someone deciding to randomly attack you because of an assumption you were there to do harm or cause trouble. Still not a great situation, but definitely a different one.

Oh today at work, my colleague popped a green concoction for me to drink.

Colleague: I'm going to open this, wanna share half with me? I dare you.

Me: I accept the challenge. Bring it on!

I suspect the concoction was bitter gourd and lemon juice. I did drink the whole portion without spitting it out etc. I mean I know I can take quite a bit of green taste and weird stuff. Not that it was fun to drink, but yeah I generally ace food dares.

We're going to have our "Winter Concert" next Wednesday evening (the last day of school). But since the school's Board of Directors mandated that, because we have students from a variety of faith traditions, including "none of the above", no song that mentions, or is sung for a holiday celebrated by, any religion is permitted.

So the choir director has my class, combined with Val's, singing two random folk songs in Spanish, and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".
Hermione's class is singing "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey.

It should be... interesting.

I'm honestly impressed by that decision, since usually Texas' ideas of inclusion are limited to "We allow both Baptists AND Methodists!"

Now the song choices...there's plenty of "winter holiday" music that doesn't run afoul of the decision that's been arranged for a choir.

Yeah, it's FaWtL, so I won't go off on how stupid, "Refuse to acknowledge any religion exists," as compared to, say, educating your students that there's more than one religion.

I always loved Saint Mary's for being a Catholic school that required students to take Comparative Religion so they would actually, y'know, know that there were other religions out there...

On the one hand, I understand that Facebook and eVite are very easy and convenient ways to schedule social events, and only grumpy old sticks-in-the-mud refuse to participate in them.

On the other hand, trying to RSVP to a party on eVite and seeing the little box, "You will automatically be subscribed to eVite emails by selecting a response. You may change that preference at any time" is just infuriating.

"Yep. We're going to opt you in. No choice if you want to respond. But sure, once you get the first of our spam, THEN we'll let you opt out."

Sooooo... aggravating!

On the other hand, sending a bunch of "No"s is really relaxing me quite a bit. Should start a whole, "No Social December" movement...

You are absolutely correct. But. In the case of Texas - their state school board, their state legislature, and basically any institution that gets public funds within - I consider this "inclusion by exclusion" to be *progress* for that state. One small step among many to take. This is still somehow better than what they usually do.

Yes. Allow me to automatically opt them in to a demonstration on the use of mace, pepper spray, and tasers, and after the first session they can be allowed to manually opt out.

Gotta second Vany as someone who grew up in Texas. In my younger years the mentality down there definitely was more of the "We're plenty inclusive, see we didn't run the Catholics out of town!" line of thought.

The idea that "we have people who aren't Christian involved, so we're going to take that into account in any way at all whatsoever" is a major step forward.

It's also a private school and pretty liberal. The big walkathon fundraiser the kids did this fall was for the humanitarian respite center down at the border. Hermione's class is doing a stuffed animal drive for Christmas to send down there for all the kids who show up with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Our tennis coach is taking them down when she goes to volunteer over the vacation.

So, yeah, they're going way overboard with the concert rules. I for one wouldn't mind if we had songs for Christmas, Hannukah, Solstice, Eid, and anything else someone wanted to celebrate. I wouldn't mind if a group of middle school kids did Dar Williams' "The Christians and the Pagans", which is a wonderful, funny, sweet song that ought to be a holiday standard.

But NO JOURNEY.

Eh...

It was a pipe dream of my parents quite some years ago…they still own a bit of "forest" (more like a wild tree plantation ^^') though, and we still get called out to help manage it from time to time (clearing out dead or damaged trees, planting new ones...that sort of stuff). The "forest" still produces "natural" trees enough for the immediate family, neighbors and friends…
and they are cat tested and approved (by Oscar the former Orc-cat, Cnut and Axle - My parents expert tree-killerstesters ^^).
