If you did that to me, you'd get both the kick and yelled at. Basically in the train, if someone leans on my shoulder once, the first time, I tell him off.

NH – I’m at book 5 in Strange Aeons. What Grows Within.

Strange Aeons Book 2:

I had to patch up plotholes, and say that Accuser Omari was investigating Count Lowls, but was not allowed to search the place, so she went to Fort Hailcourse to go get some help from Magistrate Padgett. But earlier to prevent them from rushing straight to Fort Hailcourse, I had Cesadia say that she’d only tell them more about Count Lowls(aka, Fort Hailcourse, Iris Hill), if they cleared up the stuff in town. Else they’d probably rush to Iris Hill straight. I wanted to make sure the party was sufficiently high level to take on Iris Hill, as it is they had a couple of close calls with the Penanggalen and the bard stared too long at a Hound of Tindalos and died.

Strange Aeons Book 3:

My Strange Aeons full party run more or less ended there. Of course, the players will deny it, but I suspect the lack of loot was one of the reasons – basically in Dreamlands – you get no loot that you can take out to Golarion and the Dreamlands encounters are rather over the top. I suspect in compensation for the fact you can wake yourself up anytime you bloody well please, and death isn’t a permanent condition. I handpicked the insanities – to make sure the right insanities went to the right person, and no one actually got an insanity that stopped them from playing their character. I.e giving a bunch of borderline murderhobos Moral insanity, which drops their alignment to CE, I don’t want to know what’s going to happen. The book expects them to be self motivated to find their memories. When I pulled a the module says you have to on the players, they weren’t too happy about it. Running the module straight with the players skipping Dreamlands means that they never find out about Kaklatath since she can’t contact them as amnesiacs, they don’t get the +2 inherent bonus from the dreamquests, and are underlevelled by 3 levels for Book 4.
They still can proceed if they raise/speak to the dead with Elder Lythiin, or squeeze information out of Miacknian Mun since they can tell them that they overheard the guards talk about Okeno, but they will have no idea how to find Neruzavin, unless Biting Lash’s maps in book 4 are altered to be more explicit. Kaklatath can lead them in the direction of Neruzavin, but since they never found her – they will miss that out, as well as certain portions where she gets to unlock loot in the underground in book 5. Kaklatath also has a lot of background information to share with the PCs, which they will miss out on.

Basically everytime I have to get creative to patch up plotholes, I get irritated.

Strange Aeons Book 4:

There’s one spot where two of Hyena Princess Njano’s hirelings, Hankoor and Kiestez, defect from her and betray the party out of spite. The whole thing puzzled me I was like, “What the heck? That doesn’t make sense”, so I tried to make the whole episode more believable and gave some forewarning, by first having Kiestez scold the offending wizard in public for daring to approach Hyena Princess Njano at the flesh markets empty handed, which resulted in the Hyena Princess, who is trying to cultivate a civilized reputation, having to yell at Kiestez in public.
From Kiestez’s point of view, this outsider comes in and causes her boss to scold her.
From Hyena Princess point of view, Kiestez yelling in public at the wizard was damaging her reputation, and also showing that she could not control her subordinates. So Hyena Princess Njano had Kiestez whipped when they got back to her residence, which fostered more resentment towards him. After the wizard pulled out a scry and rescue captive in front of her, as well as bring in the kidnapper for her, Hyena Princess Njano offered him a job, which he declined.
Kiestez and Hankoor saw that they might be made redundant and felt they weren’t being treated fairly after their long service with Hyena Princess Njano – which lead to their defection to Biting Lash.
Later when he returned to the Hyena Princess, she was quite distant to him, and told him that she would be more comfortable if he left Okeno. I never had the opportunity to explain to the player, but the reason was that yes, she didn’t like Biting Lash, but all she did was to tell him the location of her fortress, and he slaughtered every single gnoll in there. At the back of her mind she was wondering, ”What if one day, he asks someone about where my residence is, and does the same to me?” Especially so, since he declined her offer of job, so she doesn’t have control over him per se.

But I think that Strange Aeons…has quite a number of plotholes to patch, though I certainly contributed to a couple more by trying to add players in book 2. And patching plotholes irritates me since I don’t know if I am doing a good job in patching plotholes, or have I done my players a disservice.

I was considering running Strange Aeons again, just to save on module buying costs, but I’m not sure if Strange Aeons is the type of module that I want to run as a GM. There are too many moments where it’s sucks to be you, players.

Strange Aeons:

Like who ever puts doppelgangers up against a level 1 party. +8 to hit and (1d8+4) dmg, and decent AC means SOMEONE’s going to go down, and it’s potential TPK material.
And the Bhole in the mortuary.
Hound of Tindalos, Penanggalen in Iris Hill.
Not to mention the formless spawn in the dreamlands bath.
And Sarnath, if you take too long, Bokrug crashes the party. And everyone dies.

I also had a dream. It involved a nuclear incident and a lot of radiation sickness. I was apparently a walking ground zero. Queen was not involved. I don't think we had the same dream, which is good because I don't want Strange Aeons to be based on real life.

Well, I've taken the plunge. After my phone's fiascos on the high school trip, I dug around in my drawer and found an iPhone 3GS and two iPhone 4Ses, so I activated one of the 4Ses.

It met my requirement of "free", except it's an extra $10/month over my flip phone and I felt the need to buy a small portable charger for it.

So far I hate it, but we'll see how it performs on the middle school trip.

Today the boss's daughter is coming to our campus to take class photos for the yearbook. She's going to put stupid little cardboard mortarboards on two year olds.
Oh, and we all have to wear our boxy unisex school tee shirts, which she designed.
So of course I'm in a delightful mood.
But I get to see my mom, my sister, and my new niece in nine days, so I am using that as an excuse to not flay people.

Flaying! Yes, great fun!

Terribly messy though, and it requires some much patient work (on unwilling victims). I usually feed my enemies to wild animal, as that's much less labour intensive (and I'm lazy).
Also flaying relatives of those in charge isn't that conducive a career move in my experience.

Strange Aeons, NH:

I read your comments in the GM discussion thread - I think if you want to run it so they can get to go to the Dreamlands - don't make condition removal that hard - I had one of Captain Skywind's crew members be a shaman - he could do lesser restoration twice per day - since the group's investigator did not take infusion discovery.

Though I think the idea is that you're away from civilization and only have yourselves to depend on.

Change the knowledge checks to be DC 20 instead of 25.

If you want to let them skip dreamlands, just let them level based on overland adventures, then let them go to Cassomir etc, clear mysterium, if necessary (like they don't raise Elder Lythiin/manage to talk to Miacknian Mun, drop a couple of pages out of Lowl's journals that say Okeno - Biting Lash.

Then at the Blossoming Thorn - either make Kalakthath seek them out, or make Biting Lash's notes become more explicit, with directions on how to get to Neruzavin.

Just a Mort wrote:

Since we're spoilering:
They have a GMNPC shaman who can prepare both Remove Curse and Lesser Restoration, so it's not the stat damage nor the curses that are the issue; it's that there is NO MOTIVATION WHATSOEVER to explore the Dreamlands.

As I have in my pending writeup:

As far as I can tell their research results in:
- Lowls went to the Dreamlands a LOT to do his nefarious research
- While there, he met with the Mad Poet
- The Mad Poet made him sacrifice the PCs' minds to get what he wanted
- They learn the ritual to go there
- From their other research, they already know where Lowls is going and what he plans on doing there

So, the final bullet eliminates any need for the PCs to go to the Dreamlands. "We already know where he's going. We're already in pursuit of him. Why would we risk going to a chaotic and dangerous realm that might drive us insane when we already know what we're doing?"

So all I'm going to do is let them do the river journey first, then have the trail dead-end so they have to go to the Dreamlands to pick it up again. It's not a major rewrite, and it gives them a couple of extra levels to make the Dreamlands less over-the-top deadly.

We'll see how it goes.

The Exchange

NH:

Actually I think in Book 2 you can guess that he went to Katheer so they could potentially get to Katheer and the Mysterium. Though the extra levels should make Dreamlands less deadly too so that could work.

They had a sale at Pegasus Games yesterday, so I picked up the Book Of The Damned (I wanted to get Horror Adventures, but no dice).

It's pretty good, the artwork alone is probably worth the cost.

And they added enough new content that despite already owning the original three I don't feel like I'm buying the same thing twice.

So, over the last few weeks I've been giving Attack on Titan another chance, since everybody raves about how good it is. And I'll say, it went on an amazing arc from an "unpleasant" episode 1, to a "tolerable" episode 2, to "hooked" by episode 3 or 4.

Then came an amazing, surprising, riveting story arc, and you wondered, "This is incredible! What are they doing here? How are they going to resolve it?"
And in my mind, I had at least 2-3 interesting ideas as to what they were going to do, and I was really looking forward to it.

And then...

HUGE Attack on Titan Spoiler:
Super-serum? Not, "He has the genes of the people who created the titans?" Not, "He crawled into the nerve center and bonded with it?" Not, "His overwhelming rage allowed him to control the titan?"

Just... super-serum?

Seriously, AoT?

It's plummeted in quality since that revelation, and now it's just a chore to try to finish out Season 1.

Hopefully it'll improve again.

I wish it were legal to perform harmless acts of vandalism on insufferable drivers' vehicles.

It's the 3rd Wednesday of the month, so I dutifully moved the Celica and put out the, "No Parking, noon - 4:00 pm" sign.

And a big red SUV parked right in front of the No Parking sign at 3:00 pm.

Since it's a temporary sign, I can't have them ticketed. But oh, boy, would I LOVE to just upend a bucket of maybe 5 gallons of honey on their roof, just to show them how much I appreciate such behavior...

The Exchange

I can’t do CoCT because of the RP requirements – too many NPCs to track and I can’t RP them to my satisfaction. Which makes me generally only stuck with dungeon crawl types of APs. Kingmaker would kill me with the accounting part of kingdom building…and Iron Gods – the less I have to deal with mechs, robots, the happier I’d be.

I’m actually quite cool with dark souls and bloodborne games, and I run a fairly decent Carrion Hill, so I thought Strange Aeons should be ok. But I think there are issues of GM-AP compatibility. Strange Aeons has Call of Cthulhu roots – which means that there’s a lot of mystery in it (which makes things unfair for players as they do not have the complete picture to base their decisions on), and also that player characters are a speck in an uncaring universe (which violates my principles of player freedoms). Of course even player freedoms – the freedom to swing your fist ends at your neighbours nose.
