Er, Windows 95, 98, NT, ME, XP, 7, 8, and 10, all with various quirks and irritations. Comparing Ubuntu to Windows 8 and Debian to Windows XP is not unjust; they work in very similar ways, but different enough it's a learning curve to move from one to another. And I'll point out that I just purchased Windows 7 even though Windows 8 and Windows 10 are out, so it's not like Microsoft makes its OSes "serially available" where you can only buy one.

The huge advantage of Linux, and the reason devotees love it, is how easy it is to configure the operating system. For newer systems, "I want to run a totally-unsecured Samba share" is perfectly do-able, whereas Windows or MacOS would stop you and just plain old not allow it. For older systems, "Stop running all this junk I never use" is a HUGE win. I take old Windows machines that take 10 minutes to boot and can barely hack through a word processor, put a slimmed-down Linux on them, and they run as fast as brand-new Windows machines... as long as you're not trying to run games on them.

So Linux has its place for sure.

A gaming desktop is definitely NOT that place.

So...1400s on, it took on the lewd connotation, and historically, these kinds of slurs tend to stick more strongly to women...that's my conjecture, but I think there's logic to it.
Kinda. From the etymology, it looks like the lewd meaning was first attached to poor people. And then, as morality shifted, it became limited to poor women and eventually just women in general.

So, like, I have never, ever heard of "wanton" applying only to lewd women. This is so very weird to have a bunch of people going, "Oh, yeah, it's totally a word about women."

Like, I've heard it all my life, and it's always been equally applied to male and female (and, in fact, I've heard it applied much more often to males than females).

It's a little mind-bending for some reason.

It's probably because, like myself, Tac's primarily exposure to the word comes through Biblical sources. And when it's used there, it's generally used to describe an action or pattern of behavior, regardless of the person (or their gender) doing it.

On the topic of laptop brands, my last few (and my current one) have been Toshiba. I don't know how well they would handle gaming since Hearthstone is pretty much the only PC game I've played in the last 10 years, but they do what I need them too and usually last a decent amount of time. For instance, my current laptop has a quad-core AMD processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a 500 GB hard drive. I think I paid $350 for it 4 years ago, and it works just as well for me now as it did back then.

We had 4-9 inches of snow on Saturday (depending on which side of the river you're on, etc, etc, etc). My only other local tech just bought a house. Most of it has a traditional roof, but he just found out that one section that's hidden from view is just a flat section that's been tarred over, and not well. There is now a crack in the ceiling of his upstairs bathroom with water dripping through. And then we had about about 3 inches of rain yesterday. And we're expecting more rain tonight.

He's going to need a bigger boat.

Not much a fan of wontons, unless they're fried.

He worked from home yesterday because he had to take the time to monitor the buckets and change them out. They didn't do that on Monday, came home after work, and found the buckets had overflowed. And the ceiling crack, of course, is spreading with water beading around it.

He's got someone coming to look at the roof on Friday, but the earliest anyone is going to get there to actually work on it won't be until middle of next week.

Pretty much exactly this.

I mean, I’ve seen and heard it used in other places, but generally applied equally (and most often referring to Biblical sources, I’d imagine), so...

As for wanton destruction, again, I’ve never heard of that being a “man” thing - it’s mostly been gender neutral, often applied to large disasters or mass combat; that said, lesser, still-non-gendered acts of individuals are included, though I’d guess there are more news stories or books ‘bout dudes being destructive, as I don’t recall as many about females.

But in my time I’ve called plenty of Spoony dude-bards* “wanton” (and have played a dude or two who could be called such), and I’ve run several females who have engaged wanton acts of destruction (as an aside, demons can be very sick**). Also the other way around. So having any of those be gender-specific is just weird.

So now, of course, I need animated wanton wontons who engage in wanton violence.

Which brings up another question in my mind: is orgy gendered for most of you (it is not for me)? What about an “orgy of violence”? And why, oh why, do we relate sexual activity with violence so readily?

* it’s a reference; class is irrelevant
** why yes, I’m blaming fictional demons (instead of real ones) for awful acts in my imagination, instead of accepting that I can guess up really nasty evil things, thanks!

This is going to risk getting political...

Eyes his surroundings warily, looking for signs of Fritzy's spotters

1) Orgy is non-gendered unless specifically gendered. An orgy, by generic definition, requires no gender. A lesbian orgy, on the other hand, is specifically gendered.

2) "Animated wanton wontons who engange in wanton violence" is now going to be the hot new anime. Thank you for that.

3) Sex and violence...and what we decide in America is ok and not ok to be shown on TV and what gets what movie ratings...is completely out of whack (in my opinion).

Trying to keep this family friendly:
Violence is much more acceptable on screen than sex. Nudity in and of itself has multiple standards of ridiculousness. From the nudity standpoint, a movie rating is determined (partially) by the amount of and screen time devoted to the nudity. Sideboob gets you a PG13. Full frontal female nudity is an R. Full frontal male nudity gets you an R under very specific circumstances - length of screentime, number of incidents, and, well, the "status" of the male nudity. If it's a full attention, then you're immediately looking at an NC17 rating at best, but a full on screen beheading is still just an R rating. Because that's obviously less controversial to see than a sex organ.

I've mentioned some of my father's quotes on the subject, but his favorite example was a play that they were trying to put on at a major theater.

One scene depicted an Aztec ritual of a priest cutting out a woman's heart and offering it up to the gods in sacrifice.

The scene was banned, not because it showed a woman having her heart cut out, but because she would be topless during that scene.

Yeah, the U.S. is really screwed up in terms of sex and violence.

Walked past the Rainbow discussing tactics in the hall.

...why can't I get them that focused on English class?!

3 people marked this as a favorite.

The "gendering" of expressions is often a bit of a minefield, firstly because its often hard or impossible to dig into anykind of precise etymological ancestry of a given word or phrase. Secondly because such words and phrases often change to fit current ... err ... "underlying structural meta-narratives" in the society in which its used or to put it more simply; words and phrases change meaning and usages as the society around them change.

Let me give a Danish example:

The expression for a person who engages in constant (or excessive) fights is someone "Slår på tæven"
Translated, that's someone who's "Beats/beating a b@#*#"
And yes...Like in English the word for a female dog and a derogatory description of a female is the same word in Danish.

Lets pause and consider that briefly. So an expression for someone who engages in constant fights, is either related to a perpetrator of domestic abuse or animal abuse?
That's hard to say...might be that these act are meaningly related, as in all three are related examples of excessive usage of force in society(?) Or it might be that lowborn, Promiscuous or similar negative quality laden women and dog were viewed as similarly low beings that could be treated similarly (?)
Honestly there are so many factors that go into figuring these things out that its not a straight forward deal from "meaning" to usage to intended meaning.

Now in above Danish example, there's an additional layer. When we dig into the "ancestry" of the phrase, and in particular the word "Tæve" (ie B@@*#), it seems that the word is of Low German origin (or middle Dutch, but I won't go too much into that) (Teve).
Not that many problems there. Now when looking into that word (Teve), you find more interesting (and confusing) stuff.
So; Low German "Teve" -> "b!$*~ (roughly)", but the (Low German) word "Keve" which would be pronounced very similarly in Danish, means "Jaw or Jawbone".

So is it all about a misunderstanding about correct pronunciation between a (southern) Dane and a (Northern) German back in the early middle ages?
You could almost imagine that, people being people, but who knows? So I'll iterate my initial statement. Understand this sort of stuff is a minefield.

Can't give any definitive answers. Got a lot of guesses though.

Both are primary physical "expressions", thus seem more related then other expression that rely more complex mental hoops to run through.

Its something almost everyone can do from birth, and thus requires little or no prior knowledge (ie its part of human firmware).

Its both things that can stimulate people on a deep level (might be linked to some of the same chemical compounds that gives us the feeling of a "high"). Heck I don't think BDSM would be quite the same if there wasn't a physical pain/pleasure aspect to it.

Probably could find more, but those are the one on the top of my head.

Edit: Good catch Freehold, that it has enter language that way probably means that there a long historical association behind it (which, yes there is).

Gods, it's so "fun" when you want modern hardware, but you don't trust modern software.

So I got my Windows 7 disc today, but ended up with a Catch-22:
- If I enable RAID in the BIOS, the Windows 7 install CD doesn't recognize itself and won't boot
- If I don't enable RAID in the BIOS, I lose a lot of hard drive speed (I'm doing a RAID 0 dual-drive array to get additional platter performance)

It took maybe 45-60 minutes to track down the problem (including pulling the battery to clear CMOS, 'cause Gigabyte is NOT user-friendly), so I'm trying letting Windows 7 get itself happily installed and updated to modern times, all with the RAID array detached.

Once Windows 7 updates, I'll fix the BIOS and attach the RAID array.

Other than millions of dollars and world domination, what do I have to lose?

EDIT: OK. That's pretty darned funny. When I installed Windows and entered the license key, I didn't bother setting the clock, 'cause I figured it would get network time eventually. So I finally finished my installs, it got the network time, and it said, "Hey, it's been NINE YEARS since you entered that key! It's expired now!"

I agree mostly on almost every point.
The real rub is just solving the Rp vs mechanical mess that the D&D-ish lineage has made the class-based system over the years. That said it is mostly functional, if a bit of a ass-backwards, confusing balancing act in making the class "equal" in importance, ease of use and in-game impact.
Figuring that equation out to a satisfactory degree is a tall task to ask of anyone, and most of the time the attempts fall short somewhere in the development. That of cause doesn't mean we shouldn't try, quite the opposite actually, its important to test out as many "angles of attack" on the class-based system as possible, so we can find those sweet nuggets of goodness that it does hide.

Let me ask a little question (also any other fellow FaWtLer please chime in if you want ^^) on a related subject.

I've been playing around with the idea of just merging all the Craft [insert some sort of magical gear] feats into the respective Crafting Skills (fx jewelry for Rings, weapon smith for weapon's and so on)

Also what would the "imagined" consequences be if "feat->Improved->greater feat lines kind of automatically upgrade to the next level if the prerequisites were meet.
(Yea I could see exceptions where it wouldn't make sense like Improved shield bash or Improved Stone cunning or the like...but slapping on a different pre-req or something like BaB +x or level X could solve that?)

Between the 58 degree weather, the job interview this morning, and Pact Worlds hopefully out for delivery today, my enthusiasm for working tonight is at an all time low.

Edit: I also anticipate a picked over carcass of a store when I get there, people have been relentless g+$+@+n savages.

rides wild horses into captain yesterday store, leaps off of horse to eat a coworker in horrifying act of cannibalism, asks for directions to my little pony clearance

Ah man, the company was liquidating co-workers too? Sooooo hungry...
