Did you get a TV on Black Friday?

That's so stereotypical I think everyone needs to do it at least once... and since said TVs are specifically manufactured on the cheap for said day, you can do it again next year!

EDIT:

NobodysHome's Obligatory Cheap TV Story:
My friend, 'Chris', was amazing in his ability to get in anywhere. To this day, I still use his technique to great effect: Pretend you belong there, act like you know what you're doing, and, if caught, be clueless and friendly and lie like a dog.

So Chris was wandering around the U.C. Berkeley campus, looking for stuff to scavenge (I know, lisamarlene, I do tend to attract such sorts), when he found an old TV. Now, kids, this was one of those old "cathode ray tube" models, so the 25" TV weighed around 50 pounds. I am sure you cannot fathom how we survived such hardships.

Anyway, Chris was bored, so he picked up the TV and carried it to Kroeber Hall, the art building for U.C. Berkeley and a building that resembles a giant llama from a certain angle. He took the TV up to the open balcony on the 9th-ish floor, heaved it up, and dropped it down to the courtyard below, greatly enjoying the implosion and resulting spectacular mess. Fortunately, the courtyard was closed to the public because some reprobates kept dropping stuff off the 9th floor balcony. The nerve!

Chris nonchalantly took the elevator back down to the ground floor and approached the courtyard. There, the poor janitor who would have to clean up his handiwork was muttering to himself as unlocked the courtyard door. Chris touched his arm.
"You're not going to go in there, are you?"
"Yeah. Why not?"
"There might be more up there!"
(Thoughtfully) "Oh, yeah..."

So Chris wandered out of Kroeber Hall, leaving the janitor staring wistfully up at the balcony, waiting for the second TV to drop...

Ah, great. Gotta love working with property managers.

They finally have prospective renters checking the place out, and were appalled to find out that there's no power, gas, water, or anything else. They asked, "Did you have the power cut?"

Well, let's see:
(1) You took over the place when it still had renters in it, and said renters were paying all the utilities. You knew that.
(2) The renters paid rent to you for a month, so I figured I was done.
(3) You managed their move-out and post move-out inspection.

So why the heck was *I* supposed to contact the utility companies and take over all the utilities? Isn't that what property managers do??!!?

I certainly don't think it's a deal-breaker; a 2300-square-foot house around here at $3500 is a steal, so they'll probably snap up the place, power or no.

But since no one was paying the utilities, I expect there's a nice hefty $1000 cutoff fee awaiting us when we try to get the utilities started up again.

*SIGH*

It's kind of funny how defensive people get about pizza of all things. Given there are far, far better foods in the world to proclaim praises over. I like pizza fine - though the more I hear about New York style, the more I never want to see it again - but it's hardly the most important food culture in the world.

Though I will say that within that limited scope, Imo's is indeed the best pizza I have ever had.

I sure wouldn't want Hitler to be having a BBQ with his buddies in his afterlife...

NH,the reason why the contractors didn't follow design is probably because they have some building codes to adhere to, and those probably aren't kosher. I wouldn't want my head on the block so to speak.

Which brings me to another point. Big Norse Wolf asked me once why I was so RAW. My answer: Accountability.

If my VC asked why certain things happened the way they did, I'd just point to the rulebook. I have to answer to people after all.

That's admittedly one reason I don't do PFS - I like not having anyone to answer to with my DMing besides myself.

The other reason being I use waaaaaaaaaaay too much 3.5, 3rd party PF, and homebrew stuff in my games to fly with PFS.

That would be fair... except the whole project was "by the book" including a license from the city, an inspector, etc. The city had already approved the plan, including the deck. So when you have official government docs saying, "It's OK to do it this way," you have less of an argument that you didn't want to do it that way.

And I would have really preferred a, "We're not going to do it. Do you want us to just leave it empty, or do it the way we want to?"

Just finding it done differently was... irritating.

Different strokes for different people. Everyone has freedom of choice. If the current system doesn't fit your gaming needs, go cook up your own.

But dont expect the system to change just to cater to you.

I don't PFS much these days either. Im tired of covering everyone's @ss because all they do is play melee beatsticks.

Besides I think because of my rule lawyersishness, I'm happier GMing.

Oh yeah, no question. PFS doesn't need to change for me, and I know there's lots of people that enjoy the heck out of it; more power to them. ^_^

Why I don’t PFS:

PFS – no matter what they say, expect you to have a balanced party. If you don’t, expect to have a bad time (especially at higher levels). Or alternatively you stock up on scrolls and stuff, which eats into your WBL so you don’t get to get nice things. My area is full of locals with melee beatsticks, who are only interested in beating things up. Sure, I can cover arcane, or divine, but not both. I don’t like witches because how useful you are in the scenario depends on whether things can be affected with mind affecting. I prefer hexcrafters if I’m doing witchy things. At least if nothing else goes, there’s always shocking grasp with a scimitar to the face.

I do not care for DPR arms races. I do not optimize damage dealing well. I prefer to pull strings from behind the scenes, but most of PFS pretty much boils down to, you kick down the door and murderhobo everything.
You get screwed over for inappropriate party composition or lack of optimization from your team. And you either TPK, never get to play that character again(losing all those scenarios you invested in the character), or you optimize to the extent that you can solo most scenarios and make it unfun for your team.

Season 5 really nailed it – they were filling the whole place with robots. Seriously hardness 10 and 16 AC for level 1 characters to fight, with +6 to hit? Sure, you get an adamantine dagger, but still there’s a lot of hp to chew through – 40 ish.

If you don’t have a dedicated melee beatsticks, you’re screwed. Obviously they were trying to force people to buy splat books to get heart of metal and other things(nanite bloodline?) to deal with constructs.

Constructs = immunity to most evocation magic due to their hardness, and they actually have good reflex saves, so grease isn’t really a thing. Basically the wizard sits there and twiddles thumbs, and I’m that wizard. Even summoning an earth elemental on that thing wouldn’t do much due to hardness. And my general to go to solution for things that require brute force – animal companions, are effectively neutered due to the hardness. It just becomes a DPR arms race which I have no interest in participating, nor am I any good at it.

Season 9 = obscure skillcheck a plenty. Who the heck puts ranks in climb and swim…well if I were doing AP work as a ranger, I probably would, but who really cares about those when a fly spell pretty much gets you where you want to. Since they are trying to stuff too many things into a single slot – it makes scenarios very draggy.

Also playing in person usually the games run very late, and I get into trouble with my family later.

And despite that PFS is supposed to be all about same rules all over the board…I’ve had dazing fireball being said that it can’t be used for what its supposed to do, twice. And I don’t want to slow the table by rulelawyering it, since scenarios can go pretty long as it is.

Life on PBPs:

Dying doesn’t have permanent consequences, so you’re free to cheese/ or not cheese, or just simply explore different options.

Some options you do not get to try out in PFS. Oooh Shiny! I love experimentation.

No more busting curfew hour since you get to play as and when you like on PBPs.

I’m not much of a talker on tables – being unable to come up with conversation on the fly (hey some cats aren’t so spontaneous), but on PBPs, since I AM willing to invest time in thinking of conversations, that gets rid of my tongue tied issue. I sound passably eloquent.

I tend to speak faster when I get excited, and my voice isn’t very loud so many times at a table people talk over me. At least on PBPs I spell things out so my message gets heard.

Problems:

Most games don’t last very long since most GMs seem to have attention deficit issues and just vanish without a trace.

Players also just vanish without a trace.

You get to deal with all kinds of houserules that aren’t RAW (yeah it’s a pet peeve of mine). I can adapt around problems, but I need to know there is a problem first. Again in PFS, some houserules still sneak in as can be seen above. Again, if death has no penalty, putting up with some houserules doesn’t really matter that much does it? Just reroll the character in question.

Getting into a game can be a pain. Many recruitment threads expect novella long backstories, which honestly I’ll never be good at – since I build the character first, fluff later. And my first focus is on experimentation and trying new things, so backstories pretty much take a backseat.

I won’t say I’m the best Roleplayer ever…since I’m too task driven for that to ever happen. But at least if you’re wanting someone to post day in, day out reliably, push plot, I’m your cat.

I’m pretty sure this isn’t the right place to rant and that people would disagree with some things I have said, but at least I finally put together in words how I feel about things.

We live in two different parts of the world, TOZ.

Even playing PFS online at home – I get questions from my family on why I am keeping that odd hours(the games are at midnight my time), and people keep asking me to speak on mic, which I CANNOT because my family is sleeping. People think I am not being a team player for that. And sometimes my parents will complain that the sound of me typing will wake them up. And I get told not to do it.

If I manage to find a daytime game, I get bothered and asked why am I talking to a computer, lunch is ready, why cant’ I just stop in the middle of a session to eat, the food will get cold…etc. And constant interruptions.

Hell, I’ve gone to the extent to sneaking to a café with my laptop just to do it, and I’ve gotten stares from other patrons for talking too loudly to the mic, so that’s another issue.

So much bother, that I don’t do real time games for PFS anymore.
If you’re asking me why I do not move out – a house here costs like 500,000 in local currency and is very expensive. It is not a decision you would make lightly.

Nah, not moving out is a legitimate thing, anywhere, based on finances.

(Yes, I'm answering for TOZ. Take that, good buddy*!)

LOL. Popped online to rant again on how AP writers just don't seem to understand the simple rule that spellcasting makes NOISE, and got to read Just A Mort's brief essay on the subject of PFS, RAWyering, etc.

I don't mind house rules as long as they make sense, are consistent, and apply to both sides.

When an AP writes, "The bad guys surreptitiously cast Charm Person at the dinner table, hoping to lure the PCs to their cause," you want to track down the AP writer, beat him or her with a rolled-up copy of said AP book, and force them to read that whole part about verbal and somatic spell components again, before asking, "So where, exactly, on this stat block do I find Silent Spell and Still Spell? Nowhere? So my bad guy is at the dinner table, wildly moving his hands in his lap and moaning loudly in an arcane language. Yeah, THAT'S going to go over well..."
