xD oh dear

I presume that means he's either game stiflingly good at it or hilariously bad. lol.

Oh, I won't go to great lengths, but it's essentially "stiflingly bad":

  • As a 12th-level wizard, reading his entire spell list, then going into his spellbook, then going back through the spell list again, and finally deciding on... Magic Missile after spending 20 minutes on a single combat round. Once I threatened to start using a 5-minutes-per-turn timer he improved, but he still takes the longest turns at the table by an order of magnitude, and it is NOT to do something effective
  • The classic, "It depends on what your definition of 'is' is" player. He considers spell descriptions and rule statements to be infinitely parseable in his favor, if he just takes long enough to think about it. We had it out, and now whenever he starts I ask, "Do you really want to go there?", but he makes it very clear that he's unhappy with me. "Oh, well I know that *you* want to play by 'the rules', and since that's what 'the rules' say, we *have* to play that way."
This one right here is the reason GMs quit.

  • And I'll stop there, because it's rather unfair to dump all over him when he's not here. He did take great delight in abusing NPCs, but a forced alignment shift and facing the massive repercussions of his character's choices makes for a good story, and makes it clear that this isn't a video game -- being abusive to NPCs has consequences.

So anyway, he always plays a wizard, takes forever for his turns, and complains a lot when the rules aren't in his favor, hence "Whingey Wizard".

Well, he's got an adjunct foot in the door. The challenge is to do well enough to turn it into a better position on the faculty.

The deliberating thing I can relate to, I know a guy who could take half an hour or more preparing spells for a level 3 druid .-.

and then normally just prepped entangle, shillelagh or goodberry, mostly goodberry xD

Not preparing spells. Choosing which of his prepared spells to cast during combat.

I understand that yes. I have no anecdotes about that however, mine is about preparing.

That's why we mostly play Starfinder.

    Magic Missile actually does something.

We think you're confusing anecdote with antidote.

And we already told you our price for the antidote.

I actually think Starfinder looks quite interesting its like pathfinder with 5e influences in space from what I can see. And whilst I haven't played 5e I'm not one of those who is offended by it. I think that whole style of game offers something different to pathfinder mechanically and I have room for both.

unfortunately I have no-one and no-where to play pathfinder let alone 5e or Starfinder.

I quit D&D for seventeen years, and then picked it up again as a winter hobby when I started landscaping in Wisconsin (I learned the profession in Seattle on high end projects) and had trouble dealing with having time off during the winter.

I discovered pathfinder when I needed an adventure because I can't write my own and the clerk helpfully suggested Stolen Lands.

The next day, armed with a 50% off your next purchase coupon for Borders I bought the CRB, Bestiary, and Campaign Setting (the old one) and then started flipping all my D&D books immediately after that.

Use social media to organize a group local to you. Ask if a group member can host the game sessions. If not that, try a local public library. If all else fails, consider joining a play by post game here on the forums. I'm currently working on an ongoing, freeform Starfinder game. When I'm finished, I'll send you an invitation.

Walking the dog, tis a blustery early evening.

Quite nice for the time of year.

The rocking horse has been hung with care and the rest of the family is out to look for something to make it's eyes glow and glow in the dark fangs so hopefully it looks like a nightmare. :-)

This job is either going to be the big turning point for our family, or it's going to be the thing that crashed and burned his dreams.

    So no pressure.

best of luck to him . I know what it's like for everything to hinge on a single shot. Please accept on his behalf this coupon for 1 free chocolate caking of any person of your choice.

It is the one day I absolutely refuse to work on.

Religious reasons? or just your like Garfield but a day early?

Sundays are usually quite smooth for me too. For instance, tonight we've only sold about a dozen rooms. Should be nice and quiet.

No, just don't want to mar a good day by working.

It used to be because that's when new episodes of The Simpsons aired, but I haven't watched actual tv in years.

    So, on principle, I guess.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well, on principle, I don't like working at all. But if I have to, and I do, then Sundays are generally an easy day for me.

It is not an easy day for the toy industry.

It people aren't trying to ditch their kids for awhile they're trying to haggle over getting last week's sales.

"But I have the ad right here!"

"Yes but it clearly states the dates it's good for at the end of the fine print at the bottom of the last page, I don't know how clearer you want me to be"

I have a new "favorite GM toy"! (VERY minor Skull & Shackles spoiler)

    A new toy:
Our party ended up in an Unhallowed area with a linked Silence. Cue hilarity:
  • The captain indicated to the ranger that he should guard a door in case anyone came out of it. So he completely missed it as a massive fight broke out at the other end of the hall, not figuring out that anything was wrong until the enemy cleric's Blade Barrier popped up around him. (And I will hate him forever for dancing through it three times and not taking a single point of damage thanks to Evasion, while my life oracle had to pass through it twice and took full damage both times.)
  • We have a "hilariously useless" player; it's very much like she's playing a different game from the rest of us and thus does things that she thinks are very critical, but that fundamentally aren't. One time, the entire party was being pursued by a horde of extremely powerful zombies. While they fled for their lives, she was on a flying carpet, and decided to trace out a giant Wind rune in the temple... for 5 solid turns! Did nothing, and nearly caused a party wipe. Another time in the final boss fight she looked around, decided she didn't have a proper "role" and proudly stood there, doing nothing, saying, "The story doesn't work unless I do nothing."
    Yeah, lots of nothing.
So, in this game her sorceress got hit by the blade barrier, failed her save, got dropped to single-digit hit points, and, in a Silence field, jumped off a railing to try to get out of the Silence. Cue biffing her Acrobatics roll and knocking herself to negative hit points out of sight of the rest of the party members. So my life oracle was standing there on the wrong side of the Blade Barrier, nonchalantly taking rounds to heal herself while the sorceress was bleeding out. We were all laughing so hard (except the player), but she miraculously self-stabilized and we eventually found her.

  • All kinds of fun!

It turns out Hobbits are the reason humans first contracted genital herpes from primates.

    I'm not surprised.

    So conflicted.

My youngest is finally down for a nap: should I take this opportunity to watch Daredevil, or take a nap myself.

Right now, I'm working on the former, but the latter may happen be no fault of the show. Exhausted. Not enough sleep. But really been wanting to watch this show. Hrm...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

sounds like nap time to me.

Although that wouldn't be the advice I'd give myself, since I can't sleep without showering before hand or being drunk
