Random tangent:

Rescue collies are a gateway drug.
Specifically, they are a gateway drug to *more* rescue collies.

After three out of four of our housemate's dogs died over the past year (they were all old, with severe health problems), the remaining dog, Mac, was moping. Housemate tried to pretend Mac wasn't moping, was just being a sedate older dog. Dog stopped eating. Housemate tried various enticements, admitted Mac was moping.

Housemate adopted a new rescue collie (a delightful 18-month-old named Jack, who is basically just a jack russell terrier that someone played a Giant Growth on and called a collie for convenience) two weeks ago.

Yesterday, housemate brought home a "foster" rescue collie ("foster" as in, yeah, right, "foster", he's gonna be permanent), sixteen-months-old and equally rambunctious, named Tommy. It's disconcerting because he's a blue merle, which means that he *looks* like he ought to be old and dignified, but he acts like a puppy. A sixty-pound puppy.

Ugh. I am questioning my life choices today as I frantically try to finish the Easter crafts I didn't do over the past two months because of my hurt back ( among other parts, but the back has been bad enough to make sitting on a normal chair impossible for more than a couple minutes). I've taken more of the strong pain meds and I'm still fading fast. But I am not giving up! So it's now a contest to see which breaks first, my body or my stubbornness...

Look, if anyone asks about the Campaign stuff, I was tending my sick child.

(Got called in at 11:15 on the day we were going to head out of town to see family that he had an over-100-degree-fever...)

So this is a thing.

We were going to be out of town to hang with my wife's family until Monday, and go to a Star Wars thing tomorrow with my wife's brother and his wife (just adults! how awesome!).

We are definitely not doing that, now. Over 17 people, all of whom have reasons for avoiding getting sick (expensive tickets to things, in the middle of a long trip, lingering complications from "fixed" heart problems, and so on) are planning on being crammed in the same house as our Eldest was going to be in, and to bring him so close to a pool and deny him entry is also just too cruel... especially when all the other kids will be enjoying it.

So... we're home, he's fevery, and we are missing family stuff. Also a Star Wars thing we've planned for most of a year.

:/

That sucks! We've all been there. You're doing the right thing and hopefully it's over quickly. :-)

I'm okay. My wife thrust me out the door and demanded I go as:
1) I'm not sick
2) I'm with the kids all day every day
3) we had friends waiting to meet us for the last year
4) we've paid for nonrefundable tickets a year in advance and one of us should use them, dang it

So now I'm at the convention. Alone.

How can I be daggum moping at the middle of a Star Wars convention?! Dang it!

*sniff*

I watched my dad's dog for two weeks this spring while he was in California.

Everyone around the neighborhood would ask "did you get another dog?" "No, just watching her while my dad is in California for two weeks"

Now, six weeks later, everyone is asking "what happened to your other dog?"

The General is making a Heavens Shaman with a chicken as her spirit animal. But here's where it gets good, she's also bought a half dozen of what she calls "deflector chickens" if her chicken ever gets in trouble she tosses out a handful of chickens to deflect attention from the familiar chicken (which has a star map on it's feathers).

She's also modeling her somewhat after Pam from Archer.

I might've mentioned how much I love my wife. :-)

Tiny T-Rex was given strict instructions about "not waking up the parents"

So, he woke me up. Little guy wanted to know if he could have some chips, so I replied, eyes still bleary "sure" to which he replied "actually, I'd like a sandwich too, because they go so well together" insert hopeful five year old smile here.

Fifteen minutes later he has a kick ass hard salami, lettuce, tomato, and western dressing sandwich on a French baguette with chips.

if she's modeling her after Pam, isn't she going to have to use a dolphin?

*SIGH*

Well, I'm actually feeling better today, which isn't saying much, considering I spent the entire day yesterday in bed, but I'm at least sitting instead of lying, and feel like I can get a few things done (the budget and Impus Major's homework). On the other hand, I think even going out to a movie is beyond me, much less running a game. Ah, well, maybe I'll be well enough tomorrow to go participate in a game. Seems likely.

In other news, it is always disappointing when your family shows its mercenary, merciless side. As you know, I have tenants. I let them move in at 10% below market, and I've been raising their rent at roughly 4% per year, just above the 3.xxx% COLA adjustment for the area.

Unfortunately, my family just found out the repercussions of doing this for 10 years: Our tenants' $2700/month rent is roughly half the rent in surrounding houses, because Albany is stupid.

So my view on the house was that it was "free money" -- we already own it free-and-clear, property taxes are nearly nonexistent thanks to Prop 13, so it's just money in our pockets. Everyone in my family is financially well-off, so if we're not charging market rate so what? It's still free money.

Well, I've been ousted as property manager, and they're bringing in a pro to bring the rent back inline with surrounding houses. My tenants can expect 15-20% rent increases annually until they're forced out and a wealthier family can move in. Albany has no rent control, so they could just as easily increase the rent by 100% this year, so they feel they're being "merciful".

Having been on the receiving end of such "mercy" once before, it just plain sucks.

So I'm disappointed that my family is just one more group so obsessed with the bottom dollar that humanity goes by the wayside.

*SIGH* again.

Also a spirit animal has to be a familiar.

I got back safe last night and had a blast with my friends!

We got to a whole TWO panels: the Art panel (which was surprisingly awesome), and one titled something like "The Life History of Han Solo" or something (it, too, was awesome, though different than what I expected going in).

The Art presentation was about three of the art books that had recently come out, and I was surprised by the authors' thoroughness and impressed with their -basically academic-level - research in their topics.

I did surprise some of the authors by linking the visual style is what was intended for "crime city" (the original concept of what eventually became Moz's palace in episode 7), and Jehda City from Rogue One, and noting how Jedha City even adopted a few older pieces like an early draft for a gate to Jabba's palace that was never seen in-film.

It was really cool to see how the Art has informed the plot in several cases and how well Lucas and later followers used their resources.

The other panel was The Life and History of Han Solo was different than what I thought, but still tremendously informative. It was by a collection of blog writers, podcasters, and authors (basically "ascended fans" of various sorts), and mostly they casually refereenced material (often glossing over exactly what it said or what happened within) as they analyzed and talked out and debated the nature, personality, style, and essence of Han Solo. Not quite the quasi-documentary that I expected! Still, extremely interesting and informative, and left me feeling that Han had a much deeper sense of honor and loyalty than his vibe would suggest - sure, it's something we all know, but it was interesting to see various reasons all teased out and laid bare like that. Also, unmentioned by anyone at the panel (and I couldn't as it was late and I had to leave as they were getting ready for audience questions) was the fact that much of what they discussed about Han actually traces its roots to a very specific archetype of manliness - a 50s greaser. The braggadocious swagger covering a deeply emotional heart of gold and absolute life-sacrificing devotion to his freinds, along with the need to be watched and praised strongly reminded me of that fifties archetype (and, with Han being so deeply linked to Ford, I couldn't help but think of the other major time a character of Ford's had some sort of relationship with a greaser; incidentally, Dr. Jones had father-son relationship issues then, too).

One other really cool thing was to learn exactly how many times the character of Han had been rewritten. A lot.

Anyway, all that was awesome! Yay!

... and now I'm sick. DANG it!

Oh well, thanks, FAWTL for being so cool! I appreciate you guys!
