So, when you have one player from one campaign constantly arguing with you about your interpretations of the rules, it's a "player problem".

When three different players from three different campaigns start arguing with you, you have to look in the mirror.

But am I really being unreasonable?

(1) "Core only" MEANS "Core only"
One of my players is arguing with me because his alchemist took Holy Bombs from Champions of Purity, and I nixed it. Cue the usual, "I don't think it's THAT powerful. I don't see why you have a problem with it!"
On the one hand, in his case it was an honest mistake; he moved his player file from my computer to my wife's, and her version of Hero Labs enabled a lot of things that I had disabled.
But when I say, "Core only", and I point out something that you've taken that's non-core, why do you then insist on arguing with me as to why it's actually OK because it's not all THAT powerful?

(2) "RAW" is trumped by "Rule 0"
Since this one might actually cause debate on FaWtL, I figure I need to spoiler it:

Spring Attack:
Since Spring Attack's literal reading is, "You take no attacks of opportunity", it's a wonderful 5 feats in one. You suddenly have Improved Unarmed Strike, Improved Trip, Improved Sunder, and Improved Disarm in addition to Spring Attack, since you're not taking AoOs for making any of these combat maneuvers while Spring Attacking.

My argument? The intent of Spring Attack was to eliminate AoOs from movement.
The player's argument? "Well, I don't get the +2, so obviously it's not as good as taking the feat, so why shouldn't it be 5 feats in one?"
*sigh*

(3) "Real life" is trumped by "rules"
Another spoiler, since it might be another hot topic:

Running:
In my mind, the reading of the Running rule is pretty simple:
"You can run as a full-round action. If you do, you do not also get a 5-foot step. When you run, you can move up to four times your speed in a straight line."
So you can't turn, you can't avoid difficult terrain, etc. A straight line must be straight.

I'm fairly sure this was to prevent heavily-armored tanks from dominating the battlefield because they couldn't care less about losing a bit of AC.

But I have a player who's really pretty peeved at me for enforcing this. "What do you mean, I can't run around the body? Want me to show you?"
(Always my least-favorite argument ever for a fantasy game.)

The whole thing has me reconsidering GM'ing at all, which is sad because I'm running three campaigns right now...

@Nobody:
The second one your player is just being an entitled dick it sounds like. For the third I believe same size and smaller bodies do not cause difficult terrain, but I could be wrong (and the body in your example could have been bigger than the player, you didn't say :3).

@NH: I sympathize, players say the strangest things.

If you're spoilering debatable things, though, I'd spoiler your #1 too. Personally, I inwardly groan every time I hear the words "core only."

I can understand the draw of a core only campaign.

But, any world not allowing the Advanced Player's Guide is not a world I'd want to live in (character wise I mean)

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I should clarify -- "Core Only" means no Player Companions.

I allow:
- Core Rulebook
- Advanced Player's Guide
- Advanced Race Guide
- Ultimate Magic
- Ultimate Equipment
- Ultimate Combat
- Ultimate Campaign
- Inner Sea World Guide

So maybe "core only" is an understatement.

I just despise the Player Companions and third-party addendums because they allow a lot of untested, in my opinion broken, "Stuff". And I've learned that trying to approve things on a case-by-case basis is, er, "less than fun".

EDIT: And before you get too eager with that "Favorite" button, CY, you should know that I also *gasp* enforce racial spells! Want Windy Escape? You'd better be a slyph! Want to be a "Lucky Halfing"? Then BE a frigging halfling!!!!
Yeah. I'm an uppity, power-mad GM that way...

EDIT 2: So maybe it's more that my rules are, "No Player Companions or 3rd-party stuff, and yes, you actually have to meet the racial, religious, or regional prereqs for feats, spells, and traits."

Oh, don't get me started...

...so I knew that there was water getting into the garage. I figured some crack somewhere. So last week I saw that some of my framing was getting soaked. I traced it to a crack in the porch and sealed it.

After a couple of days of real, honest-to-goodness rain (almost 4"), I decided to check on my patch... and found Lake Whimseyshire, a 6" deep pond under the house. Turns out that the porch is separating from the house, and my check on the scratch coat under the surface stucco wasn't sufficient -- the scratch coat doesn't actually go to the ground (thanks, Cheap Contractors!), but stops a good foot above it, so all the rain that's been hitting the front of my house all this time (gee... the western wall, of course) has been getting funneled under the house.

So yesterday was a sodden affair, with me applying about 20' of stucco patch in the rain to try to at least reduce the inflow, then about 10 full ShopVac tanks draining the area. (Thank goodness for ShopVacs!)

So... the leakage is reduced to a drip, the underside of the house is *mostly* drained, and the major supports are *thankfully* pressure-treated wood, so their reaction to being submerged is, "Meh. Whatever."

But the wood supporting the porch is rotted through, so we're now in a race of, "Will the porch last long enough for us to be able to replace it, or is there a catastrophic failure in the near future?"

Life as a homeowner: Interestingness.

EDIT: At this rate Captain Yesterday's introduction to me is going to be when I fly him out here to fix my house because he'll be more reliable (and cheaper) than any local "talent" and my house is threatening to fall over before I can rebuild it...

I'm home, and, as promised, here are two designs. Since the SciFi20 design rules are under copyright, I cannot show the worksheets for the designs. But I can share the results. So without further delay, I present

Exploration Scout:

The United Systems Republic Exploration Scout is based on a 100 ton Needle/Wedge hull built at TL12.
The ship has a model/6 computer, and can both communicate with and detect objects out to 480,000 KM.
A minimum crew of four is required, the Pilot/Commander, the Astrogator/Sensor operator/Comm operator,
and two Engineers. If a turret is installed, a gunner is also required. The ship has four staterooms,
which is sufficient for the base crew. If a gunner is present, the two engineers must share a stateroom.

The ship has a level-1 basic Hyperdrive, giving a speed of 0.5 lightyears per day, and a Particle thruster
providing 2 G of acceleration. The ship's Fusion reactor provides enough surplus energy to power
three lasers. Both a fuel scoop and a purification plant are present, giving the ship the capability
to refuel via "Gas Giant Skimming." The fuel is processed in 36 minutes.

A five ton vehicle bay for an Air/raft is present, and the ship has 4 tons of cargo space. The ship costs
MCr84.91

Combat Statistics: AR 0 (AC 10), SI 100, 2G, Sensors: Extreme 480,000 KM, Communications: Extreme
480,000 KM, No Turret or weapons are installed.

and

Powered Armor:

The United Systems Republic Mark I Powered Armor

This suit of Powered Armor is built at TL12. It has Str 20 and Dex 12 in the arms and can move at
a maximum speed of 30 Kph. It is fully pressurized and has the same environmental controls as a
Vac Suit. It has a standard Video system, plus Infrared and Light Intensification, both out to 100M.
The Video is projected onto a HUD in the helmet. There is an Audio system with a range of 50M, a
shoulder-mounted light, and a two-way radio with a range of 50 KM.

On worlds with a breathable atmosphere, the armor is powered by a fuel cell with enough fuel for
30 hours of operation. In Vacuum conditions, the fuel cell and fuel tank assembly is swapped with
a Battery pack providing 412.5 hours of operation. The suit has armor made of standard TL 12
materials, providing an AR of 21. The Armor has no Dex Bonus.

The Armor has a volume of 2.5 cubic meters and weighs 500 Kg ( 1/2 Ton ). The Base cost of the
Armor is Cr72,150, with the Battery pack costing an additional Cr 668.25.

Combat Statistics: AR 21 (AC 31), SI 27, Move 70, Str 20 ( +5 ), Dex 12 ( +1 attacks only ),
Duration: 30 Hours ( fuel cell ) or 412.5 hours ( battery ), Audio range: 50m, Video range:
100m with IR and LI, Radio: 2-way at 50 KM. This armor takes the same space as a Large Creature.

Hey, NH.

Spoiler:

I just had a thought regarding point three from your post above. Have the running PC make an Acrobatics check to jump over the body. Check the skill description yourself, but I believe that the skill's wording applies to the situation. I may be wrong, but it's worth considering. Another idea is to make him stop at the body, move around it, then resume running at the next round. And, I agree with Rysky concerning point two.

It's human nature to push against the boundaries. I wouldn't hold it against yourself or your players if they try to push past the limits of the game. In most cases we as humans test those boundaries as a reassurance that they do exist and remain firm. If this is the case with your players then they will actually be happy that you enforce the boundaries you established, they will be reassured that they understand your game's framework and even more comfortable building within it.
