This still surprises me, It only feels like 10 years ago.. or so. And then I remember that I graduated in 2000.. and that was like a loooong time ago,

Early November this year. Gaming convention is taking place. Saturday evening.

One of the points of program: Prelection and discussion about D&D alignments.

For a moment I considered going to see and participate. Then I looked who was the host and the people going for it... Then I recalled discussions about D&D-style alignments that I had before they all had been born*. I decided not to go because I was a bit tired after the day and would be a terrible troll instead of serious participant.

*Mostly people who are frequenting rpg winter/summer camps where my friend works as a GM, year 1997, +/-1 year.

Speaking of coding, and since I have 5 minutes to spare, even though I work for a megalithic software corporation and see many, many stupid engineering or design decisions every day, some continue to baffle me.

Such as Microsoft Window's unbelievably irritating algorithm that it MUST use a wireless network, no matter how tenuous the connectivity, in preference to a hardwired network, no matter how robust.

Oh, many people will claim that this isn't how Windows works, but try it yourself: Take a Windows 8 or a Windows 10 machine, go somewhere where your wireless connectivity is only one or two bars, hardwire the machine to a 50-100 Mbps line, boot up, and try to do some downloads.

If you're anything like everyone who's visited my house with such a machine, your download will peak at around 1.5 Mbps, IF you're lucky. Hit the "disable wireless" button, and suddenly your download spikes to 50+ Mbps.

WTF, Microsoft?!?!!?

This is what happens when non-programmers decide program features. Someone should boil programming tutorials down to a liquid so they could be used in IV bags.

LOL. You haven't met some of the programmers I've met.

I can perfectly well believe a coder at MS argued that this was a brilliant idea because, "Everybody uses wireless anyway" or some such...

P.S. I've also found my Hint Book for Secret of the Silver Blades. When you're ready for that game, let me know.

Forgotten Realms Archives Collection II is on sale now. Contains Pools (of Radiance and of Darkness), Curse, Secrets, and Adventures Unlimited (adventure builder!) plus some other games I never played...

I am not sure if I am sad or happy that my PayPal is empty...

Ah, well, they offer sales for FR archives from time to time, so it's not like the last chance to get them cheaper.

NobodysHome's Story Time:
My first technical job was at a real-time software company where one woman reviewed every piece of code we put out. She was an amazing human being.

Then, for some reason, she had a stress-related heart attack in her mid-50's and was ordered to stop with the personal code reviews.

In under 30 days, we received our first board support package (the code used to bring up a motherboard, very much like the BIOS you get with more 'traditional' PCs) that hadn't undergone her review.

Needless to say, it was a piece of junk, and the board crashed constantly, requiring full power cycles to reboot because the reset button wasn't working properly.

I dug in and right there in the code: "Lock out all interrupts because we're busy. Now go into an infinite loop waiting for the registers to hit a certain state..."

Yeah. Engineers. There are bad ones out there, too.

I can leave dirty dishes in the sink again, without having to wash them until I want to*, or need them.

Spoiler:
Or more accurately when there is enough hot water in boiler for that and I don't want to turn boiler soon enough again to get more water for washing dishes**.

**

Spoiler:
Careful balancing of hot water use from a boiler use makes wonders to my electricity bill. When my friends were living with me, the bills were around 200 zloty per month. When they left I got set the bills at 100 zloty for the next four months using my 8-ball prediction. After I corrected the prognosis according to the last month of electricity use, the predicted bill (assuming 105 kWh use per month, based on the last month usage), is 60-something. And because of the overpaid amount in the last six months, the next bill that I actually have to pay is around 40 zloty in January (i.e. no bill to be paid for December as the overpaid amount covers more than that).

4. Dat was some fish fry huh!

In that order.

I don't know what it was about my best friend, but every time he went anywhere where chickens dwelt, they would viciously attack him, pecking hard enough to draw blood. I would have to kick them away from him.

So it was funny when I was in grad school and one of my fellow students was a vegetarian. She asked, "Would you be OK killing your own meat?"
"Are you kidding? Heck YES!!! I HATE chickens! I'd kill 'em in a hot second!"
"Then I have no problem with you."

I liked her and we got along splendidly, but she did have quite an attitude about meat-eaters who didn't have the guts to kill their own meat.

Ah, what a difference 30 years makes!

Tonight's NobodysWife's company's holiday party, and as opposed to our utterly-amazing fiascos (the dreaded, "It's a potluck! Bring your own food to a room with no facilities (no heating, no refrigeration, not even water), leave it there for 6 hours, then be judged on how good it is!"), her company is going all-out: They've rented out an entire bar, are having it decorated in a casino motif, and are requesting semiformal attire.

So everyone gets to dress up, pretend to gamble, drink too much, and (presumably) be overwhelmed by deafening music preventing even a pretext of conversation.

Sounds like my own personal vision of Hell.

Of course, I'm sure the youngling's'll eat it up. NobodysWife is talking about how excited everyone is about it.
