I am a Swede! I mean, my grandma was full on Swedish. But I do have her recipes for meatballs and Swedish pancakes, as well as Swedish Rye, but I don't like rye, so.

I'm not particularly fond of rye baked goods, but by golly a Brooklyn is mighty tasty & refreshing.

I like rye bread a lot. And bourbon, though it's pretty hard to come by hereabouts.

If I am trapped in Freehold's snow globe prison at least he could pamper me in here more... Working to pay all these expensive bills is tedious.

Ao Freehold is a mysterious god GM, with deific intricate plans that make Xanatos look like a moron.

Have you ever tried making it? My mum and I did, but all we ended up with was a jar full of Mouldy Old Dough

People actually bought this record. Paid money for it. Got it into the bloody charts. Why?

I got a job last week.

Less than four days after losing my last.

I started yesterday...six days after the old job.

This pays more on average, has better benefits, and it was the second offer I had that week.

I got my job three days after applying. And I only applied because of a random trip to Oakland because I wanted to ride the ferry. Then again, I'm retail, and San Francisco has a severe shortage of people willing to work for retail wages.

My job I got hired before I was done filling out the application. :-)

When we moved from Seattle, I applied for a job before we left, had a phone interview on the way, and was offered the job before we even got back to Wisconsin. It was a four day drive. :-)

Good pain free morning... or bad? Days like yesterday make me not want to go to work today. But at least my vision is back where it's supposed to be. Kind of frightening to think that maybe one day it won't come back and I will lose the internet, fictional places, and beauty all at once...

Twas a so so weekend here, it was cold, I had to work, and had a ream of paperwork that needed to be turned in this morning (turned in).

But, I did get the Bestiary 2 pawn set for half price because the box was slightly marred, because the huge pawn bases weren't packed very well and pushed against the top, so the box has a noticeable peak in it. :-)

Oh! Oh! I should listen to hippy music this week.

Mmmm... groovy...

Well, I'm back from chaperoning 116 kids to L.A. for a music exchange, and after 3 nights with a grand total of 12 hours of sleep (including barely an hour on the 9-hour bus ride home), I did a bit of catching up yesterday.

Wonderful, wonderful kids, and a wonderful, wonderful trip. But I tell you what: Ow!

Highlight of the trip: Arriving at Esperanza High to find a bunch of banners up saying, "Welcome, Albany High School!" and a line of students cheering us as we got off the bus. What a welcome!

Lowlight of the trip: Being dropped off at "the opera house" to see an opera, be told by ticket takers that we have to "go around" with a gesture to indicate that it's just a short distance, and then running on a 1.25-mile trek across a campus (Cal State Long Beach?) trying to get to the show on time. With only 18 minutes and 3 disabled students, it was an adventure, to say the least. But the kids will be able to tell stories about it for years.

All in all, great trip!

Living the Tech Life:

As we were planning the trip, one of the chaperones asked me, "Isn't there a wine trattoria inside California Adventure? Isn't it called, 'Napa Rose' or something?"
Several other chaperones admitted to having heard about it, and I told them that I wasn't sure on the name, but it was in the Napa section of California Adventure and it was a wonderful little bistro, with outdoor seating, clinging vines, and reasonably-priced ($18-$22 a plate), quite good meals. (For the record, it's the "Wine Country Trattoria".)

Once we were trying to get there for our reservation, I came to the horrific realization that Napa Rose is the uber upscale chi-chi restaurant in the Grand Californian Hotel that runs $40-$50 a plate, and which is a solid, "Don't bother with it."
So, risk embarrassment to the group by canceling the reservation at the "way too expensive for a high school music teacher (and several of the chaperones) place", or suck it up and deal with it?

Basically, two of the chaperones work for tech companies. And the conversation was:
Other Chaperone: NobodysHome, it's a secret, but I'll be covering dinner tonight.
NobodysHome: D'oh! I already told <music teacher> that I'd be covering her dinner.
OC: I have seniority! My kids have been in the program for 7 years!
NH: OK. I defer. But I get to pay for my own dinner and 40% of the music teacher's. I'll slip you $xxx before dinner.
OC: Deal.

So as several of the chaperones gasped in horror at the price list, OC announced that she'd be covering dinner for everyone. A magnificent gesture, and she made a really beautiful speech about how much the music teacher meant to her. (Music Teacher cried.) We all made speeches. I am proud that mine made her cry, too (Bad NobodysHome!). I took a bit of a hit to my reputation as several of the other chaperones insisted on giving her cash and I didn't (since I already had), but that was all cleared up post-dinner as the other chaperones learned of our co-plotting, and I really preferred that the Music Teacher understood it was entirely on OC.

But of course, me, being me, couldn't sit there and have Music Teacher think that I'd promised to pay for her dinner, then didn't even pay for my own.

So I noticed she ordered a shot of Talisker with dinner. Hence a bottle of the hard-to-find 18-year-old Talisker is on its way to her.

Cost about the same as her meal would have, and everybody wins.

And that's just how life is in the stupid world of tech: They pay you so much to live in the stupid, stupid real estate around here that dropping $150 gifts on your music teacher is just par for the course...

And just what does it say that the other tech worker, who had only just met me on the trip, knew to tell ME to stay out of the "paying for the meal" gig, while she didn't tell any of the other chaperones?

NobodysHome's stupid moments, #457,581,289,114:

We were at the store getting dinner for the kids. I figured a rotisserie chicken, some green beans, and a baked potato. Then, I saw them: Whole pre-cooked Dungeoness crabs by the bushelful. So I grabbed one, as Impus Major is a major crab fiend.

Trouble is, I don't eat invertebrates. Particularly crabs or lobsters. So I had NO IDEA I was supposed to say, "And please crack and clean this for me."

So Impus Major was about to get a solid, uncracked, uncleaned crab when NobodysWife intervened. Her entire assessment of the situation, "You're so cute when you're clueless..."
