The lack of tact and sensitivity in my wife's family is amazing.

Father-in-laws funeral is Friday. Mother-in-law is in a permanent vegetive state (8 yrs plus) with rare glimpses of responses to anything but physical discomfort. She was contemplating divorce before her heart attack, openly discussing it with several people. She was always self conscious about her appearance or being the center of attention.

The eldest daughter and the sons think it's a good idea to have her there for the viewing and funeral, as the widow in 'a loving, Christian' home, and ignoring the negative things. My wife and her younger sister are mortified by this as am I and the younger sister's husband. We're thinking of her and the impact on friends that know about her condition but haven't seen her.

After much arguing, we came up with a compromise to limit it to private family times, but I don't trust that this will actually happen. What do you think of her being there in her hospital chair during the funeral itself?

I find I am simply unable to watch most anime. Even if I sit in front of it and watch my mind shuts it off.

That's where we're diametrically opposed in the family. Her divorce plans were real to us and others, but dismissed as just venting to the sons. She approached us and other family members as to living arrangements. She was always self-conscious. But heck, she never wanted to live in a diminished capacity, but her husband wouldn't listen to the docs and disconnect the ventilator when she showed minimal brain activity. At least she hasn't needed that for all these years, but she does require tube feeding. The men in the family seem to believe women should shut up and be subservient. They have to be in control at all times. And my father-in-law has used her to control his children (especially daughters) for years, expecting them to put their own families on hold. My mother-in-law would never have demanded that, nor to that extent. Glad I'm just an in-law.

My perspective is that if she's really truly non responsive then maybe it would be better to let them pretend. Does it harm her or those on your side of the issue? I prefer to smile and wave with stuff like this, and then go on with my own life.

Now if I felt it was traumatizing her... which seems conceivable. Then I might not do it.

Wow. All I can offer is condolences and encouragement. There's a large portion of my Dad's side of the family that is the same way. One of my aunts won't put up with that sort of treatment anymore and was disowned (how dare she leave an abusive husband, raise her kids on her own, and then remarry! O.o) for her trouble. My brothers and I make sure that when she's not invited to family functions by the grandparents, we go over to her house instead of the "official" family get together.

We're concerned that there might be enuf of a spark left to traumatize her and push her too far medically. Youngest brother's response to that concern, 'so be it'. What a dbag. There are also a number of family friends that would be upset at seeing her this way. My 89 yo mother and a number of others that remember being full of life. This would be the 1st time they've seen her in years. We're used to it and it still breaks my heart. Too much like putting her on display.

Since the Dracolich is part of Wizareds' IP, I don't think we'll ever get it... :(

But a gargantuan green dragon mini would be MOST appreciated.
