First day back to school for me...but the kidlet doesn't start until next week. I understand why the state decided to delay the start of school until after labor day, but it's so frustrating that this doesn't apply to institutions of higher learning as well. Always makes for an awkward first week of the semester for me. Not to mention all of our holiday breaks are off by a week as well throughout the school year. :/
Anyhow, hope you're all having a not awful Monday. :)

We went from almost 80F at 6,000 feet to 40F at 14,000. It was definitely a white-knuckle drive up a narrow, twisting road with lots of whining about uncomfortable ears from the back seat dogs. At the summit, Puffin and I were gasping for air, our hostess was a little light-headed even though she's well acclimated to 6,000 ft, and the dogs were climbing all over the rocks like weird marmots.
It started sleeting at the summit, so we headed down around 1 p.m., just as the thunderstorms hit. I felt sorry for those still climbing or driving to the top because there are very few places to turn around. The only wildlife (besides Texans) was one mountain goat on a cliffside and one red fox in somebody's front yard.
Idaho Springs seemed like an oxygen-rich jungle when we finally got there. It was incredibly cool to see the bristlecone pines, alpine garden, and awful jagged, rocky terrain at the tops of the mountains. It was also cool to see the lightning hitting the other peaks, which is what prompted us to descend.
I can't wait to go back to at least Echo Lake and do some hiking when we get used to the altitude here. The pine needles and mosses are so soft underfoot that it's a joy to walk there, and the dogs are welcome on leash so we can all be happy together.

I'm probably going to run a second play by post of this.
anyone here still interested?
Crimson Jester, I'm running the second game so our mutual friends with twins can play. Probably the proud daddy is the only one that will show - he's jonesing for an RPG but the little ones take a lot of time still!
Like this post if you're interested, and let's see if we have enough to start a second campaign.

Hey, I just saw some "possums" in a subway station last week!
It's good to get back to nature.
If we ended up in New York State, it would likely be at Cornell, as they are the biggest bird research University in the Northeast.

Cute town, but very very isolated.
As in, the surrounding roads are almost impassable for 6 months out of the year.

I am just saying this because if Cornell University has the large bird research going on then they are likely the ones to be hiring is all. And there will be a glut of bird research happening in the gulf of Mexico, and if I know Texan mindset ( I really don`t) they would want the research to be done by them.
