528 posts? Sorry, no will power to go back that far.

3 days of setting up/self-learning a new software program fraught with bugs so my brain is mush. Perfect for a baby zombie.

Oooo, that smell! The smell of death surrounds you!

Throwing MAD 20's on the dice roller the last couple days.

Aside from a batch of 20 d20 rolls on one post to see if something funky was going on, I think I rolled 3 natch 20's out of the last 5 rolls.

Hudak is majorly pwning epic heinous ownsomeness.

That's true. We're still finalizing the schedule but downtime is likely to be around 14-18 hours if everything goes well.

I gave a little rant a couple days ago about new legislation that is affecting loan officers. I found this analogy that fairly well describes what has happened in mortgage lending. It's kind of cute and depressingly accurate.

So my wife came home to find my oldest on my laptop, which is in my room, looking at "stuff." I am wondering if this is the first time and if he thinks I would not notice "stuff" showing up on my history. Not that I look at the history often but still. Time for passwords methinks.

Oh, and as an aside, Gary, would you do me a solid and shut that stoopid thread I started about WoW RPG? Somehow it has morphed from an interesting news item into an edition war.

In J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins became extravagantly wealthy by looting the treasure of the dragon Smaug (which he split with the dwarves). In today’s value, how much money was that? Forbes‘ Michael Noer ran some calculations and came up with $8 billion:

To keep the math relatively simple and to avoid complications like integrating the partial volume of a sphere, we can approximate Smaug’s bed of gold and silver to be a cone, with a radius of 9.6 feet (1/2 the diameter) and a height of 7 feet (assuming the weight of the dragon will smush down the point of the cone by about a foot).

Now we can calculate the volume of Smaug’s treasure mound:

V= 1/3 ? r2 h = 1/3 * ? * 9.62 * 7 = 675.6 cubic feet

But, obviously, the mound isn’t solid gold and silver. We know it has a “great two-handled cups” in it – one of which Bilbo steals – and probably human remains, not to mention the air space between the coins. Let’s assume that the mound is 30% air and bones. That makes the volume of the hoard that is pure gold and silver coins 472.9 cubic feet.

We know that Bilbo eventually takes his cut of the treasure in two small-chests, one filled with gold and the other filled with silver, so it seems safe to assume that the hoard is approximately ½ gold and ½ silver, or 236.4 cubic feet of each metal.

A billionaire Hobbit.

Welcome back!

How's the iPad 2 working for you? I'll be getting mine in a couple of weeks, but I was curious.

Actually it is working out very well. I used it last weekend for gaming and it was really useful for looking up rules quickly.

Other than dice rolling and the battlemat, my games have been run from the iPad lately.

I'm always anxious for ways to reduce the tabletop footprint. You need so much STUFF to play sometimes, and the clutter dries me nuts. This is working out for you then?

So far it is. I do realize I need a copy of the core rulebook and the APG at the table so others can refer to them. I also realize I need to learn the rules better, so I don't have to "look up" stuff during the game.

When we are out in the bush walking our pet kangaroo's we rub some behind our ears and the drop bears stay away. If you are driving rub some on the radiator.

I wish. We're starting early because it's going to be a very long process and I want to finish before midnight... And in case things don't go well I'm not still trying to fix them at 2 am or something.
