I knew your 'quality control' statement rang false for some reason. The flaw is, there is no guarantee that the wife has quality standards. She could be a bag of issues herself, unable to pick a decent, caring husband.
I'm not going to argue for or against the quality control thing making sense, but it does seem to me that, whether it makes sense or not, a fair number of women make choices as though it did.
In that sense it's worthy of discussion whether or not we can logically justify it.

TriOmegaZero: Certainly not. The more, the merrier. =) Just to clarify, though, I wasn't talking about blackmail. It's not blackmail until a threat is made, is it now?
Life is full of things that don't make sense, that people still use to guide them in their lives. Astrology, anyone?
'Traditional' monogamy for another.
But then, I've already stated my view on marriage workings. My own anecdotal experiences also run contrary to certain individuals. however; predominantly, within the circles I travel, the vast majority of relationship unrest stemmed from the distaff, unreasonable demands of the husband, domineering and controlling behavior focused on emotional blackmail and threat of financial ruin, and a depressing amount of cuckolding typically 'justified' as being 'punishment' for perceived failures at providing a satisfactory combination of social influence, physical gratification, and jewelry. Some of these examples are the closest I've seen to Jekyll and Hyde in real life I'd seen, due to knowing several of these couples from high school or further back.
Then again, there were a few relationships that ended up on the local news due to turning into 'traditional' domestic dispute situations.
I'm not sure where I was going with this, but people have been prone to be lousy at relationships, regardless of gender, for equally crappy reasons.

2. I'm not rich or powerful or charming or well-connected or particularly brilliant. I'm not even very tall. But I keep my word. That's pretty much what I've got in this life, and I don't aim to trade it in cheaply.
Well spoken, Kirth. It's sad that in some (most?) circles, integrity has to be considered ;the thing I won't give up'. Solomon only had what he ahd because he asked for wisdom first.
As an aside....maybe not being very tall is a good thing. Doesn't that make all girls leggier?

LOL, Thanks for the laugh. You sound like my dad. He is about 5'6 while my mom stood about 6'1 flatfooted or more depending on heels.
His common joke was he never saw her face for the first 5 years they were married because he didn't bother looking past her chest.Hers was "never fall for a hot body, it doesn't last long enough to put up with the BS"

Actually, it makes monogamy pretty much a given, ethics aside, because no female I've ever met will so much as look at a guy who's not at least a couple inches taller than she is. One female friend of mine put it this bluntly: "I mean, honestly, do guys really think their personality matters that much? OK, maybe 'funny' counts a little bit, but mostly we're looking for taller, hotter, and richer."
(Shrugs) So be it. I was marginally taller and richer than my wife when we met, and I wouldn't trade her for anyone.

What gave you that idea? :P Remember, everyone is the same height on their back. ;)

Huh, that's funny...half of all the girls I've been romantically/sexually involved with in my life have been taller than me. Guess charm and charisma does count for something, after all. ;-)
Seriously though, I know plenty of women who talk about having no interest in any guy who isn't taller than them, but I find that's often an abstract idea that doesn't always survive contact with actual people. I find that--except for the shallowest of people--any single physical preference is very often overridden by the complete package of individuals. Which I think speaks well of most people. =)
Just wanted to share a more positive thought than the one I made in haste and the heat of the moment, and upon reflection, removed. LOL
Best,
