The orgianl was done at caster level 3. Here is a caster level 1 version, for those wanting a cheaper gem of curing.

Not overpowered by any means. Basically yur paying twice the price to be able to move to a target and heal them rather than using a full round act to pour a potion down another dude's throat. Though there's still the problem of getting it outa stowage

I agree. It's a totally appropriate use of the magic item creation guidelines, and a very useful but not overpowered item. I'd take the words, "Command word" out of the description.
I like the CL 1 version better than the CL 2 version. (Typo: You didn't change the caster level in the description.) If I want more than 1d8+1 I would make this:
Gem of Cure Moderate Wounds
Aura faint Conjuration (healing) CL 3rd
Slot -- Price 600 gold; Weight 1/10 lb
DESCRIPTION: This crystal blue gem, shimmers with a rune on it. Touching the gem to a living creature causes the gem to cast Cure Moderate Wounds, curing 2d8+3 hp worth of damage. Using the gem is a standard action, which cause the gem to vanish.

Which Caster level you asking about.
CL 3rd ((I set it at 3rd, because you have to be 3rd level to get the feat Craft Wondrous items. Although i know this is not required, as shown in magic item examples ))...I still like doing it that way :/
Caster level effect on first version 1d8+3
Caster level effect on second version 1d8+1
............
I agree, Cleric spells do not scale well, and you are better off just using a higher level cleric spell for cures.

My issue is that it's a "gem," but costs no more than a potion. I mean, wouldn't the base gem have some value as well? If not, just make it a "feather of curing" -- tickle the guy with it and he'd healed.
Yes Feather would work, or Rock of Curing, or salt of curing (sprikle lightly :)
....
The gem version does cost twice what a potion does. Potions do not take up a body slot, but you do not have to pay x2 on potions like you do on other craft item feats.
....
Also, yes, i did not include the cost of the gem. If you want to, this would be tak onto the Retail and Creation cost as a separate cost. I did not include it in my version, because i did not say what kind of gem it was. ((Honestly, i did not care, and was hoping no one would notice :D, as it is just fluff. Lets say a worthless magical gem for us cheap skates ))
