Ryan Dancey Fan Thread

Off-Topic Discussions

I don't know how I overlooked it, but Ryan D. is going to be around throughout RPGSS'11 as a judge. This looks like the perfect opportunity for unabashed fan-boyism! Thread initiated.

"There's an Erik Mona Day. There's a Dave Arneson Day. There's a Gary Gygax Day. Obviously, Mr. Dancey should have his day!"

</random fanboi squee>

In all seriousness ... a lot of people may not be as familiar with him as they would the others mentioned above. But we would not have Pathfinder today if it weren't for him. Or a whole bunch of 3.x / OGL goodies, for that matter.

I like the way he types "Keep"

Nor would the OSR people have their playgr-, ur, sandbox.

Some of us Living City veterans however, still wince at the name. I don't dislike the guy personally but he made a series of major misjudgements that destroyed a much beloved campaign. But I'm also going to allow that WOTC may deserve a good share of the blame.

I do recognise the importance of his contributions to gaming in general, I just wish he'd never touched Raven's Bluff.

Another vote for Ryan Dancey Day (and one for Monte Cook).

Does a zombie in Amber survive until chiseled out?

Yea thanks Mr. Dancey, without you there wouldn't be Pathfinder!

Oh sure, make it a link that I can't get to from work. Damn you!

Actually the link isn't really indicative of Dancey's import. His Pen-and-Paper credits don't seem much.

.... I thought you were asking "tongue in cheek" Who's Dancey -- MY BAD. Sorry, mate.

Dancey is the guy who was "boss" and promoted the creation of the OGL -- I'm pretty sure he's also the author of the OGL.

He was also the boss of Monte Cook & Skip Williams for the creation of the D20 System.

He was also boss during the delicate transition between 2E and 3E, the advent of the D20 System.

He was also there at the Creation of the Universe.

He's also your real father -- from back when he was a mailman.

That's not true! That's impossible!

Besides, everybody knows that I was found under a rock by gypsies, then sold to the people who claim to be my parents.

Who!?!?!

WHO?!?!?!?!

Ryan Dancey = father of the OGL, and, from what I understand, one of the most significant contributors to the existence of 3e. He's the one who changed the business model of D&D/TSR from "let's just release stuff at random" to "let's release stuff our customers actually like and buy."

Edit: I like WE Ray's response better.

Search your feelings. You know it is true that he was the highest bidder for you until your parents z-bay sniped him at the last second

What can I say. I had been kind of out of D&D for awhile when 3E came out, and didn't really care who was responsible for it, just that it existed.

But only mostly dead. And mostly dead also means slightly not-alive.

If you're interested, AmberZombie, my firend Miracle Max has a pill for that.

Is it weird I just never heard his name before?

It figures, Jester, being as all the folks who support the Taldor Faction in The Society are always a bit behind in everything.

Ryan just posted a good bio at the start of the first installment of his new monthly column at ENworld.

See, now that's just proof of his mastery. He made you believe that he took the effort to type all four characters of that word each time, but the truth is that he was merely pasting it in, saving valuable keystrokes. Who else could pull that off like Dancey?

What a guy

Geez. I thought I (virtually) knew the people with whom I (virtually) hang out. Yeah, Vic, Dancey's reactivation at ENWorld has the blogosphere abuzz. I think "Hold me closer Tiny Dancey" may have been my favorite. Not to be weird or anything in a fan thread. No sirree Bob.

Spoiler:
Just kidding this time.

Guy went seriously off the deep end after he left WotC. I guess he's a judge now? I dunno, seems a bit off for someone who was claiming the entire tabletop industry was dying. I forget if this was before or after the huge GAMA problems in which he very immorally and illegally tapped into other people's emails and abused his position as treasurer while trying to be elected in.

The Destruction of Living City didn't endear him to a lot of folks either.

If people are unaware of the insightful analyses that Mr. Dancey has made of gaming and the industry over the years, it's worth doing an internet search to read them and to listen to some of the substantial interviews he has given. I recommend them.

Ryan Dancey on the GAMA resignation

Sorry....I'm just really not getting a real Kizery Sozayesque vibe from the guy. More like a "people tend to randomly run their yaps on the interwebz about possibly decent people they don't know, involved in situations they can't even fathom due to utter lack of firsthand knowledge, to throw them under buses and lulz about it" vibe on this one.

Sadly, Urizen, you seem to have been right. I kind of want to see Ryan Dancey go all Daniel Plainview on them. "Folks, I like to think of myself as Gameman. So, I'm going to be Open with you about my designs."

Until we have The Most Dangerous Day in Gaming, the masses will remain ignorant.
