Sovereign Court

Hello,

Apparently this game has just been released on Steam, so I was wondering if anybody here has already tried it, and what are your opinions ?

I am not a fond of MMOs, but running around in a cape and screaming "I am BATMAN" looks good.

Anyone ?

Okay, I haven't played it in about 3 weeks now, but I was a Beta tester for this game, and I know the last patch they released under Beta actually made the game worse.

Character creation is really limited compared to City of Heroes or Champions Online. Not only are the actual costume pieces limited, but if you are a weapon master, for instance, you start with the same weapon (again, unless they changed this pre-launch/post-Beta).

You pick one of three mentors based on your "style" of hero: Batman for Technology based, Superman for "normal" meta-humans, and Wonder Woman for magic based heroes. If you are with Batman, you start in Gotham, otherwise you start in different sections of Metropolis.

While this could be cool, as of a few weeks ago, there actually aren't enough missions from one mentor to level up, so eventually you'll start getting missions from the other mentors, which, for me, kind of ruined the effect of having a specific mentor.

The respawn rates were really wonky in places. In some places, it takes forever for new bad guys to show up, and in other places, they will pop back in as soon as you drop them.

In some places, for example in Gotham, the cops do so much damage that its hard to actually be able to take out the guys you are suppose to take out, because the cops actually don't need you that much, turns out.

I will say I stayed mainly "hero" when I was Beta testing, and I didn't do much of the end game stuff for max leveled heroes, although I read lots of complaints on the forums on how much effort it took to actually get enough tokens to buy the really cool combat armor that was available.

To be fair, some of the boss fights are fun, especially when you can say you took out Bane or Giganta, but if you start out as a magic hero with thoughts of fighting magic baddies in the DCU, its only going to happen once in a while, since you will have to cross over missions. Plus, with everyone taking missions from every mentor, it tends to kill the replay factor (play through as a hero and a villain and you've seen most of the missions).

There is some good. Like I said, some of the boss fights are fun, if you can find the ones that aren't broken or boringly repetitive (again, they could have patched this over the last three weeks, but who knows what they did towards the end).

Gotham, Metropolis, and the Watchtower all looked amazing, and it was fun just roaming around these massive areas and getting to see them in 3-D from the perspective of someone flying through them.

If you can ever get the tokens you need from high level missions to buy them, the special combat armor is actually really impressive looking. One of the sets of mystical armor, for example, is actually based on the Bronze, Silver, and Gold eagle armor that Wonder Woman, Donna Troy, and Wonder Girl wore in the comics at one point in time. There is a suit of Kryptonian battle armor, and a Thanagaran war suit, for example.

Lots of stuff looks pretty, it just didn't seem to execute things well in order for you to experience those pretty things.

Take what I say with a grain of salt. Its possible in the last three weeks running up to launch they fixed some of this, though I doubt the issue with the mentors is something that would be fixed in a patch.

I truly, truly hate MMOs, but DC Universe looked REALLY interesting- I'm sorry to hear it wasn't nearly as innovative as I thought.

KEJ, if I'm interpreting you correctly, it appears that all heroes start as a sort of battle armor hero (ala Iron Man). Is this true? How much customization regarding powers is available? I don't want to end up playing a Mecha character in the DCU if I can avoid it...

I'm a playstation + member so I got to try the beta. I can't fully say about the game as higher levels were cut off, but it is very beautiful looking and fun. Unlike other online games out there you can use your super speed to run across water and up and down buildings.

Combat system is quite easy to get to grips with, which is shown as it's able to play it on a controller. The travel powers do feel like real travel powers and you get them first level too. Customizable powers too with mixture of other hero's powers.

It's fun and all NPCs are fully voiced (including Mark Hammel as the Joker) and you get to not only meet but beat up all of the signature heroes/villains.

For instance, last night my friend who bought the game managed to beat up the ultra-humanite and before that, Bizzaro and I can attest that these battles do feel epic, especially with more heroes or villains in your group depending on what side you are on.

I personally realled liked it, but it's more expensive than compeating MMO super hero games and I don't have the money nor free time for a MMO.

Its not so much that they start out with body armor, its that all of their stats are dependent on equipment. Even if you want to be a metahuman powerhouse like Martian Manhunter or Superman, you will have to have some kind of body armor to increase your toughness.

Now, what that "armor" looks like might change a bit depending on your power set. For a magic character, the armor might look like a chain shirt, and for some metahumans, it might be some kind of gobbledegook sythflesh whatever.

Now, to a degree, other hero MMOs do this as well, but the thing that kind of gets me is that, to start out with, your powers are a lot less important than your equipment if you are a ranged person. My magic origin character had "hand blasters" that did more damage with combos than any of his individual powers. Your actual powers are more useful as a leading attack or something you can pull off once in a combat.

When you get more equipment, you get the choice of keeping your "base" appearance or adopting the look of the piece of equipment you just picked up, and the theory on this is that you will be able to customize your character over time, but it also means that the scant options to customize your character at the start is intentional and probably not going to be expanded.

I'm not sure about the "end game" armors, but you could, theoretically, if you found a look you liked, not show anything you are wearing, but if your character is keeping up with all of his stats, he probably has gloves, boots, armor, belt, cape, helmet, etc.

Anyone playing this? I just got it and new to MMOs so I could ues a guide to show me the ropes. We could form the Paizoan Team.
