How do you visualize strikes with a merciful weapon?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Silver Crusade

How do you imagine them or describe them in-game?

Do you just have it strike them like a sap or nerf bat, even if it's a bladed weapon?

Do you have the blade somehow always strike with the flat side no matter what?

One of the ideas I saw someone else use that I'm thinking about running with is that the weapon, if edged, simply enters the target like a normal blade. No blood, and no wound left behind when it's pulled out. It just goes in, deals the pain one would expect from a normal weapon, and comes out with no physical harm. No sparks or light show involved. Just seems like a simple and somewhat disconcerting visual.

How do you do it?

I always saw it as a cushioning field of force around the weapon.

Actually, that is how I visualized it. Works exactly the same as regular weapon, but no blood. But then again, I don't start describing lots of blood or gouging or crushing except after a massive blow to HP or after a great attrition of HP.

So no shenanigans like that rogue player everyone hears about that keeps dozens of knives stuck in his arms for easy access once his hp is high enough? ;)

(yeah, things get silly quick if all hp damage is directly related to actual physical harm)

yeppers That would be highly unlikely in one of my games. And a bit more to the topic. I see the merciful weapon as being PAINFUL. To my mind that is obvious, but I had a discussion with someone, and they believed it to be more like a sapping of energy --Lethargy weapon. I do not see it that way, but it could be an interesting concept for some one else's game.

two totally off topic responces:

A: One of my favorite Shadowrun moments was when a Troll street sammy character "Razorback" was intimidating a wageslave. The sammy took the wageslave's lil' Light Pistol and shot himself in the head. I did my jaw drop and made him roll. He made every bit of body save for no damage. Normally, I play a pretty strict game, and will adjust rules if I see they are being abused like this. But after half an hour of all of us laughing and joking about this. I let it happen as rolled, and the poor guy was thoroughly intimidated.

B:Hope you don't mind. But used the Mikaze name in a background for a character in Kingmaker. Holn the NG half-orc inquis of Erastil. Holn met a bard early in his life that spoke of a legendary village of good orcs and half-orcs. The location of the village has been lost in time...but it is said if one is true of heart and strong of blood, one may still find it. The bard's name was Mikaze of course :) Many would be suprised about how often board people make it into my games. My ROTRL group has fought off at least two Dire Mongoose attacks.

Yeah, I prefer the "it hurts" route if only to keep good characters from using them willy-nilly. Sure it's safe(provided you haven't unknowingly entered a dead magic zone...:O), but you'd still feel bad about sticking an innocent with it even if it was for their own good.

Spoiler:
A: Ha! Makes me wish doubly so that I had gotten in on a Shadowrun game when I had the chance!

B: Awesome! :D And no problem on name usage, it's a pretty common handle online it turns out, and anything I put on the web I'm perfectly cool with people using(especially since I've been mining PbP characters for NPCs for a year now ;) ). Damn Dire Mongeese!

Also, Go Orcs! That's certainly going to complicate race relations in the area further! I'm a player in Kingmaker so I don't have a bird's eye view of the situation, but we've already got our hands full with that side of things(kobolds and grigs living together, oy...)! (still working my ass off on that project. It will get done before month's end!)

I imagine every hit with a merciful weapon triggers a magic mouth-like effect that says things like:

"This hurts me more than it hurts you"
"Some day you'll look back at this and thank me"
"I'm only doing this because I love you"
"Don't you forget: this is for your own good"

I think of (yes another Stargate Reference) the hologram/knight constucts of Merlin. Every time Mitchel was tagged by the sword there was a flash of light, it hurt like hell, but left no visible mark.

I imagine it's like all those children animated shows like He-man and She-ra who both have powerful swords but never cut anyone in battle. So if you need visualisation, it's as far as away as Hulu.

If you want the Firearms and explosives version, just watch any episode of the A-Team.

For EVERY blow (mandatory) the enemy says "well, it does not hurt so much".

Every blow, even full attacks with GTWF and haste.

I always pictured (and described them) as weapons that were coated in a thin invisible field of "mercy." Holding the weapon you could feel the hum against your skin, and when striking an enemy (or ally) the weapon would come just short hitting the flesh. When "hitting" the weapon would make a small popping sound and leave a painful red streak on the flesh where the weapon would have struck. In stead of wounds you'd have tender flesh, bruises, and welts. Painful and obviously damage, but not lethal.

Liberty's Edge

The merciful weapon turns into a boffer in my games.

*WHACK* "I forgive you."
*WHACK* "I forgive you."
*WHACK* "I forgive you."
*WHACK* "I forgive you."

Shadow Lodge

In the book "Eldest" by Christopher Paolini, they have a spell that coats the sharp edge of a sword with a field of magic that makes the edge dull.

So, yeah, merciful weapons have little forcefields. Before "Eldest", I didn't really think about how a merciful weapon would "look".

Wack someone with a Merciful mace...

Cartoon bubble appear above target head, and wack him on the head once for every point of Non-Lethal damage you do.

When toon done... looks to everyone else and say "" That that that all folks ""

:D

A Merciful weapon looks like a LARP weapon. :P
