Round One Winners Question

RPG Superstar™ 2011 General Discussion

Just curious. If, by some miracle, the judges get down to the final 32 -before- the 18th, will the winners be announced early? I know Round 2 probably wouldn't start earlier, but just wondering if the winners would be listed. This is my first year, not sure what has transpired in earlier years.

I was curious about this as well, but my guess is that they simply use the time to go over their choices and make sure they like what they have. But, who knows.

I'm sure they'll follow the timeline they provided.

Also there's a lot of overhead to be handled, and if there is more time for that all the better.

Guest judges have to get their comments in,
The original Judges Comments need to be cleaned up and organzied ( e.g. all sentiments like: "Item x was a total wast of word count, this one does this way better" have to be removed, etc)
The Top 32 threads need to be prepared,
The Listing of the Top 32 with personal informations needs to be compiled and prepared
The Rpg-superstar Tags need to be prepared and the "Aka" for the Superstar forums too,
The round 2 rules need to be finalized.
The Alternates need to be notified and tags, notions for them be prepared in case one of the Top 32 drops out..
...
There simply is a lot of work to do, and every extra day to complete this is a good day ;)

That doesn't mean they couldn't release the list of items and their winners. And still have until the 18th to do everything else. I like my dreamworld. La-la-la!

Huh, that's an interesting point. Previous years' top 32 listings include names and location information for the contestants. Assuming someone didn't sign up for a Paizo account under a false name they'd already have everyone's real first and last names, but not necessarily city etc.

Granted, you could take a pretty good guess based on IP information and/or in some cases past billing/shipping addresses. I wonder if they do this or if contestants making the cut are queried for it somewhat earlier?

If I recall correctly not all those informations where there from the beginning. I think some of these were added during the contest, as contestants updated their profiles.

Everyone (except those behind the curtain) finds out at the same time. The Top 32 get an e-mail notice, but if that comes out before the announcement on the site, it isn't by much.

For fun:

Congratulations! You have been selected as one of the 32 finalists in Paizo's RPG Superstar™ competition! Your design for a wondrous item was selected from among hundreds of entries! But don't relax just yet—RPG Superstar is just getting started!

Your assignment for the next round is to design a monster; you can find the details on the RPG Superstar page or included below. You'll find the entry submission tool on that page. You may submit your entry anytime between now and 2 PM Pacific time on Friday, January 22nd.

In addition, we'd like to encourage you to establish your presence on paizo.com. People are probably already discussing your wondrous item on the RPG Superstar messageboards, and we believe that interacting with the community will greatly improve your ability to garner the votes you need to make it to the next round of the competition.

If you haven't already done so, please visit your profile page on paizo.com and create a profile to tell everyone a little bit about yourself. You can get to your profile page by clicking your name at the top of any page on paizo.com where it says "Welcome, your name." You should also pay a visit to your messageboard settings page and choose a messageboard icon. Most importantly, drop in to the paizo.com messageboards and let people get to know you!

Good luck on the next round!

Considering the sight was so lagged at 2:00 announcement day, I got the email long before I got back to the site. :)

Here's hoping Ross sends you another letter Joe.

Do they? I was looking and didn't see it anywhere. Well, I found a tiny little Paizo facebook page.

Well, duh, should have tried that. That's weird. When I did a search for Paizo Publishing, it found only this:

Oh well. Now I know! Thanks!

But, the reason I mention this, is maybe they can list the winners there and then the traffic here won't be so overwhelming. Of course, I wasn't here last year, so they might have done that and I'm just babbling for no reason. :P

First and foremost, on the day the Top 32 get announced, make sure you check your email...not simply the Paizo site. That's because it blows up with hits as everyone tries to check the full announcement of all 32 contestants. I made the mistake in 2009 of coming here and the server was always so busy my browser would timeout before it could bring back the RPG Superstar page.

So, I remember Lilith mentioning the DM Tools chatroom would be open for folks to come commiserate or check in on the day the Top 32 got announced. And I headed over there to wait until the board activity died down at Paizo so I could check the front page. And the first thing I saw was a greeting from Liz that said "Congrats." Talk about a way to make someone's heart stop! She was the first to let me know I'd made it. And then everyone told me to check my email. After slapping my forehead for being so obtuse, I did just that...and, sure enough...there was an email letting me know I'd made it.

Just thought I'd bring that up for folks to check in there as well on announcement day. But, make sure you check your email first. That'll be a lot faster to access than Paizo's messageboards.

Just my two cents,

Thanks for that Neil.

I probably would have checked my email first... but maybe not... so with this (last) little piece of advice/help, I'm sure to know what's happening.

I'm sure we'll make an official announcement on the FB page and Twitter as well as on the website and emailing the Top 32 and the alternates.

You'll notice that when you take your time zone into account, that e-mail went out about a minute after the results were announced. That's the plan for each year...

Last year I submitted, didn't think my item had much of a chance, and basically forgot about it. My heart just about stopped when I got that email out of the blue. (Then I started scrambling to figure out my ill-fated monster)
