as a fellow monster lover, I'm Loving this idea, especially the part about a real skull-cracker tome.

However... I need to ask... is this going to be more then just a rules update? ... are we actually going to see some new stuff in these old monster forms.

For instance..... The Glambado.... It lurks in graves.... and then pops up ,like a jack in the box. It has no other role in the game, aside from a literal Jumpscare at one point for the players... Are monsters like these going to get a concept makeover, as well as a stats update?

tsathogga thanks for sharing numbers, I am not used to that from any company.

Your numbers are example of another reason I stay away from 3pp a lot, because they just do not have the funds to make the product I would like to see.

That said for me to spend money on a 3pp developer they have to hold something special in my heart, which you happen to do. Greg A. Vaughan, is one of, if not my favorite Adventure writer and that is why I did buy Harcover Subscription for The Slumbering Tsar Saga also the ToH books are some of my favorite also, so most likely will get it, though I still would love to see it in Color with new art. Would you think about doing a Limited print Color layout option?

I would imagine that such a thing would be prohibitively expensive. It would basically involve nearly 1000 pieces of new art, added onto a book that's going to be about three times as thick as either of the Pathfinder Bestiaries (which themselves recycled as much art as feasible). I want the absolute best out of ToH Complete, but at the same time, I'd like FGG to come out ahead on the deal AND I'd like to be able to both buy the book and afford food in the same month.

I am thinking Color Layout, With some new art, but keep the plan as is with the most of the old B&W art, not a replacement of all the art. At a limited more expensive print.

A hardback, Pathfinder ToH?

Now if only it would include monsters from the Creature Collections by WhiteWolf, I'd be a happy Hermit.

I checked with Bill on this very thing, but it's a no go. Necromancer doesn't own the rights to them though they were involved in the production to some extent.

In principle at least, somebody could talk to White Wolf/CCP about licensing them. WW/CCP did license the monsters to Fiery Dragon Productions for D&D 4th, which suggests a willingness to make a deal. A Creature Collection Complete for 2012?

Must be a special kind of awesome, having a bunch off 3rd party publishers making material for a Paizo product instead of vice versa :P

Grats and kudos!

It will come as a pdf as well. I assume that it will follow our standard practices (which I'm not really sure what they are beyond the Tsar series), but if we've been offering the pdfs free as part of purchasing the hardcopy I'd think we'd continue that. However, ultimately it'll be what Bill decides so I don't know. But I think it's a very strong possibility.

OK, art I can live without, BUT:

1. Will it follow the one page = one monster format ? Because if there is anything I didn't like about the ToHRs, it's the wonky layout.

2. Will Universal Monster Rules(tm) format be followed ? With all the common stuff such as Rend or Regeneratio(n) described at the back of the book to make MOAR SPACEZ FOR MONSTARZ ?

1. The format will likely be whatever reduces page count. Some monsters on less than a page, some monsters on more than a page. That's my best guess anyway. It'll come down to what Chuck decides on in layout that works best.

2. Universal Monster Rules format will certainly be followed in the stat blocks, but I don't think it will be repeated at the end of the book since that informaiton is all available for free through the PF SRD and is already in the Paizo books. So you'll proabbly want to keep your PF Bestiary handy as a reference if necessary, but most of that stuff is pretty old hat by now.

Once again, the more page count we reduce the less it costs to print, so we want to make it as economical as possible without cutting any of the actual material from the books.

No makeovers, sorry (other than what may occur in the context of the conversion itself). This is a rules update and compilation of the three classic books. The fluff will all pretty much be the same.

I put a gambado in Vaults of Madness btw. I don't think it made the cut. :-(

Frog God Games

As I continued to peruse the thread I see that Bill had already answered some of the questions that I answered above, and he gave different answers in some cases. In general, go with his answers.

Gorb, I'm still not sure about the 1 monster per page thing, though, because the TOH monsters and their write-ups do not neatly conformwith a single page entry like the Paizo Bestiary ones do. That means a lot of blank space and extra page count. I know it's not as pristine, but I'm guessing it will probably not stick strictly to that format. But, hey, this is OldSchoolville, and sometimes that's how OldSchoolville rolls! :-)

Wow. A 3pp release that I'm pumped about. Tome of Horrors was one of my favorite d20 books back in the day, and I bought the revision and sequels as well. Between this and PF Freeport, I feel like I'm living a decade of gaming over again.

Liberty's Edge

This is one 3pp book i will purchase to have all the TOH books in one book is a hge plus for me. And the price tag is not that bad imo. The originals went for what 30-35$ a piece. So really price should not be that much of an issue.

Just make sure the PDF is copy-pasta-able, I always make my own statblocks anyway.

This will be an awesome product. Any chance to get this co-branded with Paizo in order to help support a more colorful layout?

Grand Lodge

Personally not very interested in paying the costs for new color art. Even if co-branded, the consumers have to foot the bill in the end. I'm really not interested in paying nearly double the cost (somewhere perhaps in the neighborhood of $150-$200) for new color art.

I'm so excited about this announcement that I will actually buy the PDF AND print version! I swore off dead tree versions but this is special!

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Rulebook Subscriber

I'm still psyched about this compilation/complete ToH hardcover. (And as a minor thread-jack...) I haven't purchased the Slumbering Tsar stuff at all (yet) and was wondering, if I did so (if not now... soon) am I still eligible for the hardcover when Slumbering Tsar is complete? (/end thread-jack)

Oh... and waaay to late to do anything about it (having just noticed this myself) but I see Greg must have edited his post to correct the date portion of his announcement.

[genie from Aladdin]Well, I feel sheepish. Okay Greg, you baaad boy... no more freebies. ;)

Copied and pasted from the Kiss the Frog Thread:

"Tsar hardcover will be released next summer after all 14 chapters are done (talked with the printer this morning about it). It will be for sale through about May or so? Originally I was going to cut it off so I could plan printing, but we sold a lot more than i thought we would, so I was able to get a better printing contract--e.g. less time ahead (it is still quite expensive to print)since we are doing other books as well."

I think this means you can still order the hardcover plus pdf subscription of Slumbering Tsar given this statement made by Bill earlier today on the other thread. Someone less tired than I can perhaps link the thread and/or Frog God's site as well for you.

** Now back to our continued drooling over ToH Complete **

Liberty's Edge

This sounds seriously cool.

In regards to the art, colour art is always pretty, and new art is usually appreciated, but I am totally cool with B&W and recycled art if it keeps the cost of the book reasonable. Although I understand the appeal of colour art I always find it odd when people say that (well drawn) B&W art detracts from their enjoyment of an RPG rule book.

I posted on the Necromancer forums about this, but I'll post here as well.

I plan on keeping the monsters 1 per page as was requested of me by Bill. Hazards would obviously be an exception. If there are two extremely short entries right next to each other then there might be 2 on one page.

Also, as I flip through the originals I notice that there are some that might go 2 pages.

But here's my promise to everyone: 1 monster per page OR 2 monsters on 1 page OR 1 monster on 2 pages. I really want to keep page-flipping to a minimum.

Silver Crusade

I actually do like ToH with BW art. It makes it feel so much more retro.

YAY for no page flipping !

Also, are the templates going to be updated as well ? And how many of them are we looking at ? Several ToH temps were really cool, eg. Corpsespun which Greg did use in Vaults of Madness.

I'm getting more and more excited for this ! *hops around and gnashes his tiny teeth excitedly*

From Greg's earlier post

"Yes, there will be crossover with it and the TOH monsters that Paizo has published in their Bestiaries. For the most part these will look really similar, but we did not constrain ourselves to that if we thought we liked another PF interpretation better. So in some cases there may be minor differences between the TOH and Paizo versions--call it regional variations--but I think these are pretty few and far between."

Thanks, I somehow must have missed that. Although it clashes with the preference certain Paizo employees had a while ago:

Shadow Lodge

If it's going to be called Tome of Horrors Complete, I think it definately should contain all the content from ToH Revised, II, and III. Yes, that means some overlap with the PF Bestiaries. Is this really a problem? Slight variations on the same monster is perfectly fine in my book.

I will be getting this Tome in both PF and S&W flavors.

True, but Eric was referring to a ToH through their relationship with Necromancer. This is purely the Frog God's ToH. Hope that helps.

The real question (for me anyway) is will the new froghemoth entry be updated to include eggs, wogemoths and tademoths? ;D

Exciting news, hope the layout goes to 1 page per, or split, like aniamls etc in PF, the originals are some crazy layout at times, including blank space.

Is new info being added, or is it merely going to be updated stat blocks and everythign else a copy & paste job?

Owner - House of Books and Games LLC

This is +100 awesome. Now if only someone would do the same for the Advanced Bestiary, the circle would be complete. Some of these suckers are going to be WAY nasty when updated to Pathfinder stats ... all those nifty new feat slots ... (drool)

Also kudos for the 1/1 layout. That is completely awesome. Oh, and by all means stick with the original art. I'm not buying this for the art (cool as it is), I'm buying it for the content, and the ~$100 price tag is going to be killer as it is, without doubling it (or more) for new, color art.

And I just realized ... this means Pathfinder stats for the Cenobytes ... err ... N'gathau ... I can already feel my players' hate growing ...

We looked into that seriously awhile back (well, Bill did, it was before FGG existed) and I guess was ultimately decided not to go that way. I don't know the details, but I'm just glad we're still going to be able to get it out there.

Yes, the perceptive consumer might notice the occasionaly cookie crumb caught in the binding of this volume and understand that it involved a particular person who may or may not be known for such things.

While everything is being reviewed for PF RPG compatability, the design philosophy here is to not change anything that doesn't need changing from the originals. So changes outside the updated stat blocks will be minimal.

So help me, if you have a setting / module themed around the N'gathau to give it that Hellraiser sort of feel, you can color me blood-red interested.

@Tsathogga

I think you could get some Kickstarter or patronage support for new interior artwork in the same manner that Trailblazer was able to do art for its monster book.

Its just a thought though.

Sovereign Court

Colour is irrelevant to me (I like the old-school feel of black and white and, in any case, I want it not to be insanely expensive).

I would also really like to be able to pre-order. If pre-orders are opened, I'll commit immediately.

I am already eager to get this! But I'm shuddering in horror when I think of what the price will be like...

I myself like the black and white art. This should be a very interesting book.
