If Kirth wants, I can give him editing privileges. If not, I'll probably wait until he sends new versions, rather than update as I go and have multiple versions out there.

You mean Kirth does not have the privilege of updating his rules...

Kirth, stop thinking now! You're risking a law suit!

Heh. I'm just pleased that you're sharing your material with us all.

Could someone please put up the House Rules as a google .doc just like the Feat .doc? I would love to take a look.

Dark Archive

Well I liked what you did with the feats, tweaking TWF in a decent way amongst many other feats and a couple of new interesting mechanics that I enjoyed (feat synergy)

I'm working on my own homemade campaign also just haven't got to the feat section, I might use yours if you do not mind it much, and probably add some that correspond to the campaign setting.

Classes are a bit cumbersome and easy to miss somethings or get a bit lost but other than that they look interesting and I will play test them soon enough since I'm still play testing my classes and prestige classes.

I wouldn't mind a help with the review if you want me to mail my work and help me review it I would greatly appreciate it also ^^.

I'm also interested in receiving the new versions, please.

Have you run your house rules in an APG? Have you found whether your house rules are a power boost or nerf?

TOZ, your pages on Google Docs are much too large and take a very long time to load.

If you convert them to HTML before putting them on Google Docs, they'll be more lightweight. MS Word is a terrible format for web documents. Converting MS Word documents to HTML using MS Word has traditionally not been much better - MS Word created a lot of bloat in its markup. Frontpage wasn't much better. I don't know how well the current version of MS Word handles the conversion.

If you'd like, send the documents to me and I'll look for a conversion process (converting MS Word to HTML). I'm sure there's some freeware out there which will do a good job.

Since Google Docs was just a temporary measure, I don't want to waste our time with trying to make it better. Tomorrow is my day off, so I'll take some time to try Google Sites and see if I can host them as normal files. Hopefully that will be acceptable until we find a good webhost to replace our old one.

On the subject of adventure paths, I know Kirth likes to use the individual modules as a basis for his game, without running the entire path. I believe he ran us through the Skinsaw Murders, and the party was still challenged. There have been a number of deaths, and I can say that my monk has been near death more than once, saved only by good rolls and Hero points.

TOZ's answer pretty much covered the bases. I like to occasionally pull in a prewritten adventure if I can somehow weave it into the ongoing action without it being too obvious -- I did this with "The Automatic Hound" (from Dragon magazine), "The Skinsaw Murders" (from AP #1), and more recently with "Hook Mountain Massacre." Of those, HMM has by far the most straight-up combat in it. I learned some valuable lessons from that one:

1. A barbarian, while raging, can mow through ogres like there's no tomorrow. Be sure to give him plenty of mooks to kill.

2. Having the wizard pre-buff the party, as opposed to trying to end the fights, nets large dividends.

3. One of the PCs had taken every fighter talent and feat possible to jack her AC to near-unhittable levels. The bad guy had focused on pure damage output and Power Attack. With one lucky high-multiplier crit, that PC -- whom I don't think had been hit in like 3 adventures running -- was reduced from full hp to like -20 (dead) in a single blow. The lesson was that, without the limited plot immunity provided by hero points, super-specialization through stacking bonuses isn't always as awesome as it seems to be on paper.

4. One interesting fight was with a covey of hags. When I realized all their SLAs basically auto-failed when they were threatened, I switched them to melee. When the other two were being beaten on and one finally broke loose and got a spell off, it was bad news for the party. That's sort of exactly the sort of scenario that I was shooting for, with the changes to the combat and casting rules. It's very important, once you hit 6th level or so, to keep track of what's going on in the swirl of combat, and to keep some movement and/or attacks in reserve so that you don't get caught with your pants down.

The party consisted of a rogue, a wizard, a fighter, an NPC barbarian for cannon fodder (played collectively by the group), and an NPC sorcerer (likewise, and who didn't contribute much overall). I didn't improve any of the standard monsters, and did straight conversions for the class-level ones (ogres with fighter and/or barbarian levels are TOUGH!). The adventure ended up being extremely tough but ultimately winnable by using good tactics (although, as noted, one PC did get killed).

New link for testing, now on Google Sites.

Please let me know if this works better, so I can take the time to convert all the files to .doc instead of .docx. Not going to upload everything if it doesn't work any better than Google Docs.

The 'View' option is just the Google Docs version, let me know how the 'Download' option works for you guys.

Liberty's Edge

It works much better for me. Both in downloads & clicking view. Something about the normal googledocs interface was mangling the table formats a little on my end.

Great. Thanks.

This is similar to what I was noticing about the rogue ambush talents, they work somewhat similar but differently than the strike feats (some are better, some are worse) and it may just be better to give rogues access to the strike feats themselves (writing them up similar to how you wrote up the executioner strike feat). For example just give the rogue access to the arcane boost feat rather than letting them select the arcane sneak attack rogue talent, and blinding strike would be nice for a rogue (I did not see a way to cause blindness in the ambush talents). The bleeding strike and the rogue’s talent seem about equal but work differently. Also your strike feats seem to scale better for the most part (debilitating strike and hamper defense are some exceptions) and for quite a few of the ambush talents I would rather just take the feat, as long as you think it would be fair to allow the rogue to substitute their rogue level for the BAB requirements and BAB feat advancements (otherwise probably not). Even with upgraded strike feats I cannot see rogues really wanting to wade into front line combat with their usually lower AC and hit points (not to mention they will still have a lower chance to hit).

I know you posted this forever ago, Christopher, but like a lot of your suggestions, it's one that's worth coming back to. In fact, I'm working on this right now, doing more or less exactly what you outlined here.

The rogue will get an ability at 1st level called "Opportune Strike," allowing you to substitute your rogue level for your BAB derived from rogue level, for purposes of qualifying for and determining the effects of strike feats. It also allows you to apply the effects of one strike you know to a successful sneak attack. Almost all of the Ambush talents get collapsed down to a single entry: "Ambush Talent (Ex): You gain one Strike feat as a bonus feat. Choose from the followihg options..."

Kirth, shall we start a new thread, seeing as the Google Sites link seems to be a solid hosting option?

Thanks Kirth, I think going with the new "opportune strike" option will help to improve the ambush talents for rogues and let you cut down some on the word count in the rogue document.

I was enjoying the sheer length of this one, but you're probably right...

I agree completely -- indeed, the #1 complaint seems to be some variation of "TL:DR." It's tricky to provide more options without a correspondingly large increase in page count, but if it can be done, I'm all in favor.

New thread is live!

With a new and improved title! No more needing to change threads with new versions. :)

The Exchange

The links aren't working for me.

Thats because you're in the wrong thread ;) You're also just shy of 5 years late to the party! Try following the link in the post above yours. I haven't done that so it might not actually work. If so, try searching for 'Kirthfinder'. The thread's around here somewhere...

Specifically here's a link to a post in the thread containing the documents
