Round 3: Revised Magus Discussion

Can we get a sidebar in Ultimate Magic summarizing all the rule pertaining to both touch and ranged touch spells. Things like holding a charge, taking a five foot step back and ranged touch spells provoking an AoO both for spell casting and for the ranged attack.

Why do you need a sidebar? I know I am not Jason, but these are basic rules(that are covered in the book or the FAQ), and a sidebar would take up space that could be used for other things so it is unlikely to be done without justification.

Agreed. This seems like something better done as a side page in the PRD or on d20PFSRD. It would be most appropriate, I think, as a section on a GM Screen type product.

Because the Magus brings up magic usage rules that are not normally considered in most games. It is uncommon to see characters casting spells within melee reach or with the intent of wading into melee.

It would also help alert/remind both home game GMs and Society GMs. Not only that but the side bar highlight the use of a 5 ft. step between sword attack and spell will improve "casual" player use of the class, maybe even improve their use of spell casting classes.

Dark Archive

This sounds to me like the kind of thing a conscientious Magus player ought to do himself. Compile the rules that you think GM's might need help with when you play your Magus and print them out. Use nice quality paper or maybe have it laminated at a Kinkos. Keep with the rest of your stuff and give it to the GM when you play. Problem solved and those of us who would like UM to contain new rules rather than reminders of existing ones can keep that valuable print space.

+1 to what YD said.

I agree with "The Forgotten" and "Dorje Sylas", most people out there aren't rule experts like YOU guys, it is time to get the "behind the courtains" sidebars back, 8 point letters were invented for something, use them for something more than copyright notices please.

The problem is that the Core Rules for Touch Attacks are very confusing, split in multiple areas which and which have serious problems which need FAQ if not Errata. Paizo probably isn`t prone to substantial re-working which would be needed to get Touch Attack rules in a shape that could actually win RPG Superstar, but FAQ can always be issued, while paring down redundant stuff and making sure the important parts are more directly conveyed. Search the boards for ´Touch Attack´ ´UAS´ ´Calcific Touch´ and you will find threads worthy of hitting the FAQ button.

NOT JUST MAGUSES use these rule sub-systems: Touch Spells are a signifigant part of Full Casters´ repertoire, not to mention Inquisitors, Dragon Disciples, Arcane Archers, Eldritch Knights, etc (Rogues certainly like multi-Touch Attack spells to deliver FulL Attack Sneak Attacs thru). If there is a problem in the Core Rules, ´fixing it´ by explaining it in the Magus Class is just not putting that information where it needs to be... Do you really want people debating Touch Attack rules by cross-referecing both Core Rules and a Class in Ultimate Magic?

Thanks, but that is simple stuff that my new players(when ever I get them) pick up quickly. I figure if the new guys can pick it up then it can't be that hard. They figure out real quick I get to smash them in the face if they don't step back first.
