Large Creature's Reach (and other reach questions)

Rules Questions

Me and a friend are having an argument over large creature's reach. I wish there were examples in the book of reach, but since there aren't we had to have a long discussion on it. Nonetheless, he's in red and I'm in blue.

He also argues that a person with a spear doesn't threaten diagonals because he can't threaten the whole square.

What is an actual large creature's reach?

The blue diagrams are correct.

You count the first diagonal as 5 feet and the second as 10 feet, so you can trace a 10' path to the extra squares that you gave the Large creature.

The designers have clarified that a reach weapon threatens two squares away, even diagonally. This is a specific exception.

I actually realized how to adjucate this within the game rules as I was looking at my thread after creation.

Thank you for the reply.

Just so I'm on the same page as well, does the large creature (bottom of the blue diagram) also threaten the corner two squares or just one as is drawn?

I assume it's because he can't draw a path in D&D squares to those corners.

Diagonal 1 is 5, Diagonal 2 is 10 and 15. But he can get both of the squares next to Diagonal 2 by stepping straight in a non-diagonal direction.

ie, he can't step diagonal 1 and 2 in NW for 5 and 10/15, but he can go Diagonal 1 and then N for 5 and 10 or Diagonal 1 and W for 5 and 10.

Right, the four corner squares are 15' away from the Large creature in 3e/Pathfinder measurement.

I'm pretty sure there's an exception for creatures with 10 feet of reach. There was in 3.5 and its exclusion from pathfinder would make polearms useless.

Ok, I think I just mis-read starglim's post and thought he was saying that the monster would beable to reach the corner squares. Only after re-reading it did I realize he was talking about the reach weapon.

So, y'all agree that a Large creature's diagonal reach is still 2 squares? In the old version, there was an actual diagram in the DMG showing they got a 2-square diagonal reach, but the Core book doesn't (that I've seen). So, I just always use that way anyway. Wondered if that's how other people are doing it, too.

Oy, where's that FAQ or post about 10-foot reach creatures only threatening the 15' diagonal if a creature moves to cross the 10 foot boundary?

It's a bit of a bend for RAW but has been stated as at least one designer's intent and neatly resolves the "gaming the grid" issue.

Edit: Found the thread. Look for SKR's posts. They aren't official FAQ, though.

Both colors / pictures are wrong.

Take a look at this picutres
