Hey gang, just wanted to let out a sigh of discouragement...

I'm at work today, all dressed up as Darth Vader (since it's the last workday before Holloween). I've got the mask, the cape, the gloves, the glowing lightsaber, I'm all dressed in black, and I even got an electronic gizmo that produces Vader's notorious breathing sounds.

Nobody knew what I was dressed-up as. And one person asked me if I was Batman.

I hate the government.

lol

Liberty's Edge

Surely, they were just messing with you, right?

Please tell me they were just messing with you.

Liberty's Edge

...wow, just...wow.

Edit: Okay, could say they might have seen you in a tv spot lately getting thrown through about 5 walls. Tell them it's a commercial for the new Jackass movie. Might as well try it if they're that sheltered.

Pics or it didn't happen. I just can't believe this.

Are they all real young?

Not sure why that's important. My 4-year-old knows who Darth Vader is.

I've met people who have never seen a single Star Wars movie. I believe it could happen. =(

I haven't seen any of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies -- I can still recognize Freddie Kruger (sp?). You'd have to have been living in a cave for the past 30 years to not at least recognize Darth Vader.

Silver Crusade

At least they know who Batman is...

You should watch the first one. It is available to stream from Netflix, and it's worth it just to see Johnny Depp eaten by his bed -- only to be disgorged as a stream of red sludge... :P

I think that there is a certain age group that has less knowledge of certain aspects of pop culture. They may not have grown up watching what to them are old movies. They might have watched episode 1 or part of it yet not know Vader.

While with the cartoons the younger kids are much more into it.

Dark Archive

I've never seen the original Star Wars movies. Were they any good?

No, they weren't kidding me.

I work for the Quebec government, so it's mostly old folks (50+) that speak only french, and watch only french TV.

Still, I think like Moff Rimmer... That all of these folks must have lived under a rock to not know who Vader is (even if they happen not to have seen the movie). Ugh.

I was gonna ask if you lived in the US. While the answer to that is a 'No', I would thing Canada would fall into the group of countries that for this topic it would make little difference. Maybe none of the old dudes have kids?

The inmates at the Arkham Asylum see Batman everywhere. I'm not surprised. ;)

Ahh...the Quebec old folks part might explain it.

I game with a guy that has NEVER SEEN Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. EVER. He's in his 30s.

I was going to ask. I seemed to remember you were in Montreal. I work in a Fed buidling on the South Shore and the demographic is a lot younger and more bi-lingual. You'd have no trouble being recognized here.

Greg

lol,

I just asked a person how was it she didn't know Darth Vader, and she replied that she simply didn't watch Star Trek.

I wanna cry.

You're thinking France-French. Here in Quebec it's likely Elvis Gratton.

I felt the need to reply to this but I will spoiler this for being rather off topic...

Spoiler:
I actually should. I've seen some of the special effects and they look wild. I'm not weird about horror movies like a lot of Christians are -- although I will probably shy away from Stephen King's horror stuff. (Saw a couple and they really freaked me out.)

The funny thing is that Wes Craven got his undergraduate degree where my wife got her's -- at a rather conservative Christian school. We went there a few years ago to visit and their (the school's) library has a "shrine" to any and all published works by anyone who graduated from there. So you have a number of prominent conservative Christian authors right next to "Nightmare on Elm Street". Personally I think that's pretty awesome.

I saw the newer ones, I didn't get most of it, but they were pretty good.

It saddens me when the young seem to have no appreciation of high culture.

Fair enough. Go back and watch at least episode 4 and 5.

They had very good special effects when they came out.

The scripts waver from awful to solid.

The acting is usually quite solid but with some glaring lapses into awful ham.

The plotting is tight and engaging.

Overall, I'd give them a 3/5.

There are people who rave about them but you'd have had to have spent the last twenty years away from modern media to not be able to name at least twenty superior films.

I.e. Off the top of my head, Bladerunner is not only a better film but a better sci-fi film.

I did not initially like Bladerunner. I had to in fact read the book and then go back and watch it again to realize just how good a film it was.
