Conversion of ROTRL

Ok, I'm planning on running this campaign once my current one winds up, and I've started skimming the adventures and begun the formulation of plots, props, and DOOOOoooom.

So, I run PFRPG right now. I was perusing the GMG, and I came across the section about converting from 3.5.

So, leading me to the question of Do I need to convert the adventure to PFRPG for it to be suitably difficult, or should I give it one of the 3 conversion methods provided in the GMG, and if so, which one is recommended, or lastly, should I give these adventures a full blown rewrite?

From what I can tell (and don't take this as gospel because I haven't actually started running it yet), despite being written for 3.5, DC's and challenges appear to be very similar. The only thing that I can see making things a tad too easy are the number of hit points allotted to some of the creatures. The difficulties aside from that seem to be more on the side of decision making for the players, and as such not related to the actual rolling for the most part. I HAVE, however, decided to use the following link for the monsters. It isn't cannon, but it seems to fit the bill. I'll let you know how it turns out. Running the first session tomorrow.

Hi ThornDJL7,

I'm about 2/3 of the way through the second book of ROTRL with my pathfinder group (session 22). We used the same conversion that ZangRavnos points to in the previous post; slightly modified as I have 6-7 party members instead of the requisite 4.

The conversion on the wiki works well and my party is getting plenty of loot/XP with the additional modifications specified here (Changes to the ROTRL for 6 players).

Hope this helps.

Link is blocked here at work. I'll have to check it out when I get home. Though, if it's what it sounds like, it'll make my life easier.

Update after first session run:

Conversion worked beautifully. Have 4 PC's of all facets of play (Paladin Melee Beast, Rogue Skill Monkey, Oracle Healer, and Cleric Negative Channeler). They seemed to down them with just enough difficulty to make it fun. Amazingly I was able to drop the Paladin with the Commando on dogback. I was impressed. But the healer had him up in no-time, and they continued to slaughter the goblins.

Long story short: I like the conversions so far. If I didn't use them I think they'd have torn through them too easily.

Yes. PFRPG took the core classes and added a great deal to them, bringing their power level more in line with a lot of the other options people had grown accustomed to from splat books in 3.5. As RotRL was written with core only in mind, the power level of the challenges in the AP is lower than listed, compared to PFRPG characters. IE, your players will tear through it with ease. I found this out the hard way, playing with Beta rules and not doing the conversions. Until I started doing conversion work, my players were...not bored, but certainly not ever worried.

I would add the Advanced template to everything. Then, at later levels (above 5th, probably), I'd start adding Improved Initiative and Toughness along with the Advanced template. Yes, there's that much of a difference. Especially if your players are experienced.

If you have the time, do it. It's very rewarding, in all honesty, because it gives you huge insight into what every encounter is capable of doing. You'll be able to hone them specifically for your group, and will wind up with all kinds of ideas for additional content.

If not:

Conversion for Skinsaw Murders

Conversion for Hook Mountain Massacre

Conversion for Fortress of the Stone Giants

No one has really posted anything for Sins of the Saviors or Spires of Xin-Shalast. If you go to this thread and leave your email address, Cainus has started working on them and will send you his notes.

Strangely, no one has ever posted anything for Burnt Offerings. Probably because we all started with it, didn't think it was necessary until it was too late, and did it all on the fly. Later, all the others got posted by the more diligent of us (none of those conversions are mine, by the way - but they are all well done). However, if you go to the GM Reference thread for Burnt Offerings you'll find a lot of ideas on what to do for increasing challenges and dealing with issues.

Hope all that helps.

[Edit] Having actually read all the other posts in this thread, apparently they're all posted on the Wiki. I love these boards...they're easily the best thing about Pathfinder.

Want more...

just wanted to add a large thankyou to everyone who has made these conversions. I've had little time to do them myself, and this has been amazing.

I also want to say thank you to all who has done conversions for the RotRL, i plan to run it in October.
Question:
What's the deal with those bonus feats at the player's guide? are they free? are they to be used instead of traits?

Since this was the first AP, the bonus feats appeared before they introduced the trait system. The GM will have to decided how to handle it. I've seen them converted to traits on the forum somewhere, or you can use the traits from the APG which includes some Sandpoint specific ones as examples.

Thanks to all for the conversions! :)
