Trying to write to catch the judge's eye can backfire just as easily as writing a bad item.

Also, if you're serious, you should be thinking beyond just Round 1. While the general public doesn't get to vote on your item, many folks will nevertheless consider it when they're thinking about voting for you in subsequent rounds.

So not only should your item have widee appeal than just the judges, but potential voters probably won't think that highly of you if they think your item was just sucking up to the judges....

This is true. A put in a few votes last year based on potential. I think every game designer has a strong point and a weak point, and I would hate not to vote for you in round 2 if I feel like you would be good at everything else.

Two great examples from past competitions:

My first year at Paizo, the competition allowed people to refer to the Pathfinder RPG Beta. Some guy submitted an item that fiddled with sorcerer bloodlines. Bloodlines were a brand new concept, and all three judges saw that and said, "this guy has found an unexplored niche in the game, that shows he knows the game and knows this is an area ripe for exploration." ONE person did such an item. He made the cut.
Last year, the competition allowed people to refer to the Bestiary. Matthew McGee created the batrachian helm...

That's very interesting. It would be a fine line, perhaps, between a new and innovative niche and this year's channeling item.

Would this be an auto-reject simply because it doesn't fit the mold, so to speak, or would it just have to be even extra cooler to get past auto-reject?
Ouch. That sounds like a fine line you have come down on, and probably has no easy response. ** spoiler omitted **

I appreciate your response. To add, no, my idea isn't so much about putting something cool in a particular spot because there isn't anything cool there, or about min\max'ing slots.

It has more to do with what "I perceive" as a cool factor. Of course what "I perceive" may not be relevant to the judges choices or opinions.

I have had some limited game development experience, so I like to think I where a developer hat more in situations like this, rather than a fan or player's hat.

My problem actually is more coming up with an item that is useful in a general sense of the term as well as cool. I can come up with boring and useful, way cool but not very useful, and pretty cool but not very useful but to a small niche. So I need to step outside my comfort zone and come up with something that's very cool and very useful to a larger demographic.

Hm, perhaps I'll give it a whirl this year.

Do it!

And not just Evil Lincoln—YOU. Yes, you—the one reading this right now.*

Even if you don't advance, you'll probably have fun, and you'll almost certainly learn something about game design.

Ok... unless you're ineligible to enter, in which case... enjoy watching!

Good point Vic.

Doesn't hurt to get in and take a shot, and the good news is that it's free! Whats the worst that can happen? The upside is lots of potential fun (and sweet bragging rights) :)

I failed to be ineligible for the contest this year, so I'll try to get past the 'bridesmaid' round and see if I can hang around for a while.

I'm just wondering why it opened yesterday but the submission due date is 10 months ago :P

Still, let us rock.

Wait...does this mean RPG Superstar 2011 has started? Can someone direct me to the page with the details? All I can find on this site is the 2010 info.

Thanks!

It hasn't started yet but if it follows with the previous years, Paizo will start taking submissions around the first week of December up through the first of January. Sean and the others were just giving us a heads up that its coming soon so everyone can get to work on their entries ahead of time.

NOTE: A good way to tell when it has started is the RPG Superstar 2011 logo/link will show up near the top of the left hand menu.

Gregg was referring to the fact that, on the RPGS main page (which is actually still for 2010), the row for the first round was bolded and the "Round Begins" field said "Yesterday, XX:YY PM", which I assume was some sort of date error.

Yeah, probably just a code artifact leftover from last year's competition or something got misplaced with them working on the page for this year.
