why would it not advance? the cavalier's mount treats his cavalier level as his effective druid level. under animal companion, levels granting animal companion stack for determining the power of the animal companion.

druid 1/cavalier 3 or druid 1/cavalier 10 he'd have a 4th level animal companion and an 11th level animal companion.

druid/cavalier has no need to take boon companion. all of his character levels grant animal companion. his EDL is already his character level.
taking the level of druid just grants a broadened pool of choices for selecting the type of animal companion.

Note that a drui5/cava4 wouldn't need the feat because druid stacks with any other class granting a mount.

(...unless this multiclassed cavalier doesn't want to ride a horse -- then the feat is useful.)

a druid 1/cavalier 4 would have a 5th Effective Druid Level companion, and gain the breadth of the druid's choices for what type of animal companion. he does not need a feat to expand these choices. he gets that expanded selection by taking a level in druid.
It seems like a good plan...until he takes cavalier 5 and the mount doesn't advance (if he applied Boon Companion to druid).

It depends upon the campaign ruling for cavalier (the class with the "bug up its butt" regarding this); in PFS, a cavalier is restricted to the text-listed mounts (horses and camels for medium-sized riders), and if you have companions from multiple classes, only one may "participate" in an encounter.

I.e., a human druid1/cavalier5 could either have...

....a horse6 (without needing Boon Companion)
-or-
....a pouncekitty5 (with Boon Companion:druid)

can you site the campaign ruling?
i thought that by taking the level in druid, it removed the other classes restrictions on animal companions.

ex. a druid 1/ranger 5 could have a Tiger, instead of just the ranger's allowable animal companions.

As a paladin or cavalier, what mount can I have?

As a paladin, your divine bond mount must be at least one size category larger than you starting at 1st level. If you’re a Medium PC, your mount must be Large. If you’re a Small PC, your mount must be at least Medium. You may only select a mount from the listed mounts on page 63 of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook unless another source grants access to additional creature choices. As a cavalier, you may select a mount from those listed on page 33 of the Advanced Player's Guide. No additional mounts are legal in Pathfinder Society Organized Play except when granted from another legal source.

Druid levels are a class that grants animal companion from another list, and would qualify as another legal source.

So a Druid 1/Cavalier 5 could have a horse 6 or a pouncekitty 6.
there is no need for the character to take boon companion, since all of his levels count towards his effective druid level.

if he took levels in Fighter after that, then Boon Companion would be useful.

The updated version of this feat in Animal Archive says:

Benefit: The abilities of your animal companion or
familiar are calculated as though your class were 4 levels higher, to a maximum effective druid level equal to your character level. If you have more than one animal companion or familiar, choose one to receive this benefit. If you lose or dismiss an animal companion or familiar that has received this benefit, you may apply this feat to the replacement creature.

This answers the question presented by this thread. This thread is now cleared from the FAQ queue.
