How my party breezed through the Devildrome... [spoilers]

Council of Thieves

Just finished the Devildrome last night in What Lies in Dust.
It was fun. They had figured out they would be up against lemures, so they were researching how best to counter them.

The wizard in the group is a conjurer, so he had an edge there he thought. And rightly so...

To my defense I'd like to add that it didn't help Thrax that he only summoned 2 lemures in the first round, so I decided he's summon one more group before granting them haste. Second round yielded 5.

But the PC wizard summoned 3 small earth elementals. Dropped haste on them and they started tearing the poor, almost defenseless lemures apart. He more or less dropped them as fast as Thrax could summon more. Only one time did he summon the maximum amount. Being beaten fair and square, he freaks out and tries to attack the party. In the end he only succeeded in inflicting 29 point of damage to the paladin, before he was torn apart by the leftovers of the conjurer's earthelementals...

It was a fun session, all in all. I didn't change Thrax' tactics much, spell choice or otherwise, though some changes would have helped, though not much... They are a dangerous bunch....

Can't wait till they try tackle Delvehaven... :)

Hmmm,ouch?

Our group is different. They are still in Sixfold, but it is going to be interesting. Since we have a sorcerer, but he isn't friend of summon spells, it is most likely to come in a situation, where cavalier will fight him. He is going to be happy, since he will able to use his horse in the cage. It will become epic.

But hey, small elementals? Good idea. I'm always using my summons to summon some dogs or such, but that's good idea. Note to self.

Liberty's Edge

My group found out through research that they would in all likelyhood be facing Lemures. They had no summoner, so they threw their Fighter into the ring after casting Protection from Evil, Mage Armor, and Enlarge. With the Fighter having the feat, Greater Cleave, and a +1 Cold Iron Battleaxe from the Knot, and the Bard using Bard Song in the background, it was an absolute cakewalk for the PC's. The Lemures couldn't attack unless attacked, and if the fighter took a swing, unless she fumbled, it was a hit, which almost always killed straight out. Then because of the Greater Cleave the swing to the next one...kill...then the next...kill......I just sat and watched her roll as Lemure bodies piled up. My only triumph was if the Fighter fumbled.

When Thrax stepped into the ring, it was lights out.

I knew that as soon as they cast Protection From Evil, this battle was over.

I made the "protection from" spells illegal in the arena. It takes all the sport out of it if one side can't attack the other, so it only made sense to ban it. I would suggest to all others running it to make it that way.

Our group likewise lacked a Wizard, having only a Sorcerer. We had the Ranger (with archery style) as our champion. We buffed him a few rounds while the Lemures got summoned in...and then we cast Levitate on him.

Fish in a barrel.

I think it was James Jacobs that recomended banning spells like this in the Devildrome. In my game it wasn't allowed. Kind of like cheating... It's supposed to be a fight, not a killing-field..
