Reincarnate a familiar?

Reincarnate works on a "creature". Familiar rules state you "can" pay to get a new familiar rather than "can only". Therefore I infer that you could use reincarnate to bring back a familiar as the gp route is not the only method. Is this correct?
Under reincarnate it says do your own creature table list, I'm intending to just use the familiar list, so you get a valid random familiar. Is this reasonable?
As a sorcerer doesn't forget the spells they know, should a witch's familiar retain it's spell list?
I don't think this breaks the 500gp/level for a witch familiar as you still have to pay for restorations and you get a random familiar instead of the one you want, plus you need a bit of old familiar.
Thoughts?

That seems reasonable to me.

Heh, that's interesting. My wizard just lost his familiar in a battle last night, but his improved familiar is a small air elemental. I guess there is no "bit of old familiar" for him to have, huh?

This jar (points to empty sealed jar) contains the remains of my air elemental familiar ;-)

Only wrinkle is then:

Constructs, elementals, outsiders, and undead creatures can't be reincarnated.

Otherwise, as long as: a) an animal has a soul, and b) the animal is willing to return, it seems like reincarnation would work. Of course, you'd have to deal with the two negative levels still, but for a witch, it is probably worth it.

Kobold Quarterly just released their new pdf, Advanced Feats The Witches Brew. In it there is a feat called reincarnate familiar. Check it out.

An interesting thought is: Would the list of bonus spells the familiar provide change with it's body?

Wouldn't think so. Still the same mind and spirit and planar connections, just a different body like a permanent Beast Shape.

Also note that in 3.5, a familiar could be raised from the dead without any loss of levels or Con. You may wish to adopt this, DM permitting.

Zombie this. If I reincarnate my Pseudodragon familiar, could I end up with a wyrmling or other more powerful dragon?
