This is, of course, unsustainable. This is why the economy is not recovering, and why so many people remain out of work. Too much productive capacity is being funneled into an unproductive government sector and debt payments. Interest rates will remain low for only so long, once they shoot up, the government will be trapped.

It's why if we ever start a war/argument/annoyance/etc that China doesn't agree with we auto-lose.
Our move: Start $*^@
Their move: Fine. We're cashing all these bonds with your name on them. Pay up.
Our move: ::societal collapse::
Their move: ::win::
We owed more in terms of percentages after WW2 but at least then we owed it to our own citizens. That way the gov't was allowed to be dicks and tell people to screw off when they tried to cash their war bonds.
Today we don't have that fall-back. We cannot be dicks anymore. We have to play nice and truth be told that's not a thing that comes naturally to America.

Um why on earth would we pay up in these circumstance? Seems to me the Chinese would get to suck a trillion dollar loss.

Because that would destroy any chance of getting a future loan from most countries in the world, leaving the debit spending unsustainable?

Plus China would turn off the tap of goods flowing into our country. WalMart would die immediately, and the price of everything would skyrocket since we have no factories set up anymore to create the various widgets we use in life.
Of course the flip side is that Chinese manufacturing would suffer greatly as well. But my money is on them sucking it up a lot better than we would. Call it a hunch...

Just think. THe only way for the USA to come out of this situation alive is to Loan my lunar State 2 billion-billion so we can dump it in the US space Industry as colonization Contracts. Americans get Engineering Jobs and massive growth for a century, and your economy gets taxes with which it can pay off its foreign loans without going to China and Arabic financiers for more.
I get Lunar State and you get good economy. :)

Loved the Electric Co.
Spiderman, Spiderman,
Does whatever a spider can
Spins a web, any size,
Catches thieves just like flies
Look Out!
Here comes the Spiderman.
Is he strong?
Listen bud,
He's got radioactive blood.
Can he swing from a thread
Take a look overhead
Hey, there
There goes the Spiderman.
In the chill of night
At the scene of a crime
Like a streak of light
He arrives just in time.
Spiderman, Spiderman
Friendly neighborhood Spiderman
Wealth and fame
He's ingnored
Action is his reward.
To him, life is a great big bang up
Whenever there's a hang up
You'll find the Spider man.

Who were your Presidents 1999 - 2003?
Bill Clinton from 93-01
George W. Bush 01-09
Why?
From the end of 98 to the beginning 03 income was greater than debt.
The correlation being that the administration at that time was doing something right.... Then again correlation is not causation.

Well cutting spending was part of it. Cutting regulations was another. We have had several artificial balloons in our markets because of this. Also check out what was cut. It was by no means the pork.

The Iraq War started in '03. Added a chunk to the budget.

Such a shame everyone involved added it to the budget without, you know, adding a way to pay for it to the budget. Without the unfunded war costs, would there still be a surplus?

Considering the war cost something like $144 Billion for Iraq in FT '04, and the deficit was nearly $413 billion, then, no, there would not have been a surplus. That was also the year that Medicaid was expanded with the drug subsidy for seniors, the "War on Terror" was at its peak, we spent our largest amount in aid around the world (tsunami relief, AIDS relief and malaria/dengue fever eradication in Africa, etc), and Republicans were earmarking money to every corner of the known universe. And don't forget there was a little war going on in Afghanistan as well.
The years before and after until 2008 would have registered small deficits (relatively speaking) or broken close to even without the war expenditures.
I picked '04 since it was the worst year in terms of a budget deficit under Bush.
