What if we called it the Dragoon?

dra·goon [druh-goon]

–noun
1. (esp. formerly) a European cavalryman of a heavily armed troop.
2. a member of a military unit formerly composed of such cavalrymen, as in the British army.
3. (formerly) a mounted infantryman armed with a short musket.
–verb (used with object)
4. to set dragoons or soldiers upon; persecute by armed force; oppress.
5. to force by oppressive measures; coerce: The authorities dragooned the peasants into leaving their farms.

Also See: This.

This accomplishes two things:

1) Gives the class a DEFINITE flavour. A Dragoon is the heavy artillery, packed with weapons and spells he's a one man WMD. He masters combat and magic equally in an attempt to destroy his enemies quickly and efficiently. Perhaps high level Dragoons are often called on to act as guards and emissaries for powerful dragons. Essentially a Dragoon is a master of spells and combat because dragons are masters of spells and combat.

2) Works within the parameters of the Paizo naming conventions for base classes - To whit: "A single real word with a foundation in fantasy lore".

I've been pondering it for days.

Furthermore:

Quote:

Origin:

1615–25; < F dragon, special use of dragon dragon, applied first to a pistol hammer (so named because of its shape), then to the firearm, then to the troops so armed

Please understand I'm not suggesting this because I dislike the word Magus (I think as far as it goes it's a perfectly cromulent word), but I think where the class suffers most is flavour and having a flavourful name might help build the class towards a tighter vision.

Whoops. Ah well, can't unspill the milk.

I do dislike the current name. The image I associate to "magus" is that of a haughty, powerful and stranded magic practitionner, much like a mage but more so to account for the outdated version of the word.

And I like dragoon because it's a word that has seen actual use in english and because it can refer to the ability of a true dragon to use spells and melee combat.

But yeah, the name has been discussed in length and probably won't change.

I think this one was shot down because well, it doesn't say "I'm magical" it says "I'm a cavalier"

I can see why you would want to offer a different name, since the current one isn´t perfect for everybody, but everyone will have to accept the current name.

End of story, it will not change and the discussion isn´t really helptfull.

Maybe they will pick up some of the suggested names (even though this one indeed does conjure up a cavalier) when it comes to class variants. I can certainly see a spear usinig jumping Dragoon Magus.

Or not. Paizo doesn't force anyone to buy the books and use the contents without modifications.

what ya do at home is up to you. However when you talk of the magues outside of your homegroup, then you best call it the magues or no one will have a clue what your talking about.

True enough, even if Paizo doesn't pick up the Dragoon idea that's cool. I might call them that in my game, no harm no foul.

Liberty's Edge

If they ever do a mounted, firearm-using archetype, it should be called the Dragoon.

Why that is supposed to be associated with Fighter/Wizards, I don't get.

"Magus" is not a great class name, but it's a good one. "Warlock" would have made a little more sense, but it's a little cheesy. I liked "Warden" but that doesn't really fit thematically.

Anyway, it's Magus, and that doesn't seem up for debate.

Also, this thread is made more or less moot by the fact that there was another thread going since about Monday or Tuesday that debated the whole name thing, which got locked yesterday because the name is not up for debate.

But, other than that, dragoon actually seems to me to be even less relevant than magus to what the class is supposed to be about.

As far as I am concerned, everyone can flavor the class name any way they want:

FF Fanboy ? Gunblade ^^
Witchter Fanboy? Witcher(sp?) ^^
Penny Arcade affectionado ? Wichaloak (sp?)
Bleach->Shinigami
Various->Mage Knight

Why can´t we all be nice and ally to tease the summoner players with Pokemon and Digimon jokes^^

Because dragons fight with spells and claws. Dragoon is just one of several words derived from 'dragon' that could fit, but it's well-known, and it designates a versatile combattant, so it's the first that comes to mind.

Personally I would prefer something like dragon disciple, but hey.
