At the risk of being unpopular...

Round 1: Magus

I like the Magus! It certainly will be a nice sub for Bladesingers in my campaign. I'm sure there will be some changes, but it doesn't seem as bad as everyone is saying. Thank Mr. Bulmahn and crew!

Seriously, I am not trying to be a suck up or anything, I read through and didn't see this massive list of problems lots of people are seeing. It looks fun and I am looking forward to the finished product.

isnt that why we have playtests?

Oh it needs polished, which is the point of the playtest. But I agree I see no need to scrap it and start over.

Yeah... I plan to playtest it a bit soon. I guess I felt bad for the designers, who work very hard to come with an idea that will please as many players as possible and create some new ideas and mechanics, and have it met with such harsh criticism. But I guess this is a necessary situation, and it certainly beats most game designers's "like it or lump it" approach.

I guess as a guy who hates confrontation I should be reading something else other than this forum? lol

The Magus reminds me of an amped-up Warmage, one must admit the Magus is consderably better than that... Even from the standpoint of the name (Is it just me, or does 'Warmage' sound like the rate at which something warms up?)

Hemingway said, "The first draft of anything is s***!"

There's nothing wrong with throwing a first draft out there and getting some criticism. I think it's great that Paizo lets their customers get involved in that process.

There are a lot of good ideas in the playtest version of the Magus. It does not need to be completely "scrapped." But in my opinion it does need revision and a simpler mechanic at its core that can be built around.

I came back to RPGs mainly because I stumbled across Pathfinder. I'm not that interested in playing anything else, and I want the company to be successful and grow. When Ultimate Magic comes out I want new and casual players to look at the Magus and say, 'Hell yeah, I want to play that!'

Shadow Lodge

Let us be unpopular together then! Bwahahaha!

I can see it need some tweaking here and there, but right now it still looks like a fun class to play, and I hope it only gets better(and keeps it's casting the same)!

I think we have too many 3/4 base attack bonus progression casters focused on combat now, and not a single full base attack bonus class. If scrapping it and starting over would change it to a full base attack I would be ALL for that.

I know this is probably never going to happen, but meh, I can still wish and hope.

Liberty's Edge

I like the magus too. I just think it's a bit unpolished (like you would expect from an alpha playtest) and that its core abilities are a bit... wobbly. Honestly, I'd like to see spellstrike and spell combat go the way of the dodo and the magus arcana become much more central to the class. Maybe make the class focus more on something like the paladin's ability to enhance his sword, except that the magus can change out his weapon's abilities every day (when he memorizes spells) and they're persistent (instead of once a day for a duration). Instead of getting the arcane weapon stuff later, give it earlier and make it a central class feature.

That's kind of what I was expecting from the magus to begin with; making every magus a non-shield-using two-weapon fighter where the second weapon is a spell... It's a little restrictive for my tastes, especially since the watchwords of Pathfinder (especially with the release of the APG) seem to be "modularity" and "customization."

Just my two cents.

Cavalier?

Shadow Lodge

Well, being that I care little for popularity, I really like the Magus class. This is something I've been waiting for quite eagerly, especially as a fan of Bladesingers in D&D. Yes, it's unpolished, and it will evolve as time goes on. Will it please everyone? Hell no. It can't be expected to. But to me, it's got a good framework, and needs a bit of tweaking before it's really ready to knock people's socks off.

Isn't that the point of playtests ? gripe now not later ?

Jason B: here guys try this thing out

OMFGWTFBBQSUACEBUGGERFROMHELLWHATHAVEYOUDONETOMYKITTEN!?!?!?!

and similar posts of that nature

we test

we suggest

that take all that go away

we forget about it

and then they release it and lo and behold the majority say

"hey nice job, plays pretty balanced too"

guess some people aren't used to doing to griping before the product gets release so that once its released every is oddly happy with few reasons to gripe about it ;)

+1 phasics (and others).

So far the designers have done a great job, they put out we look it over and make suggestions and 'bingo' job done. I think the major problem with the magus is that so many people have an idea on what it should be like its going to be hard to please all of them.

Even the people that just b@+@& about things can put over valid suggestions and point out problems, everyones view is valid and I'm sure the hard working guys will pull something outta their hats in the end.

Just keep up the civilized feed back guys :)
