Elemental Body

Rules Questions

Elemental Body IV says:
This spell functions as elemental body III, except that it also allows you to assume the form of a Huge air, earth, fire, or water elemental.

Can you however use this elemental body IV to assume the body of a smaller elemental instead? Large? Medium? Small? Would you keep the full range of bonuses that the higher level spell gives you?

I'd be hinging on the words "except that it ALSO allows". Hence elemental body II allows you to choose a medium elemental, buy also a small one (which elemental body I allows). Similarly, elemental body III allows you to assume the form of a large elemental, but also the medium or small elemental that elemental body II allows. And so on. Am I reading this right?

Yes. You keep all the options from EB I-III, while gaining the new options.

Yes on all counts.

Yes, you keep those options, but remember you only get those abilities if the form you shift into has them. (I don't know of any specific instances where this applies to elementals, but it's relevant to the polymorph series of form/body spells.)

I would think so.... so long as you only take the ability's of the lower elemental form.

If you cast the spell Elemental body IV

So if you use this spell to assume the Small Air elemental form, you only get the +2 to dex, +2 to AC, fly 60 (perfect), darkvision 60 feet, and small whirlwind.

You do not get the +4 size bonus for str, +6 size bonus for dex, the immunitys or faster fly speed that a huge elemental would get.

At least that is how i would look at it.

The abilities like STR/size bonus are based upon size.

The darkvision, etc qualities are based upon both the form having it and the spell you are using.

So you would benefit from casting an elemental body 4 over 3 in terms of special abilities if the form had it.

The Exchange

Question here.

With the addition of Beastery 2 and the adding 4 new elementals, is there a way to be able to transform into the ice elemental, lightning, magma or mud as a Druid in Pathfinder.

Technically no, because the spell only lists those elemental types. But I'm sure you could work it out with your DM. But you can summon them for sure.
