I'm wondering whether playing a charlatan fortune teller would be harder in golarion than it is in the real world.

It is... but keep in mind that "prophecy" is only one type of divination/fortune telling. Something like a commune spell or a harrow reading is NOT a prophecy.

Say I leave my body at 0 hp and it then becomes damaged to the point of negative my constitution score (or lower). Could I heal the body and enter it again? Or would I need to resort to other spells such as restoration, reincarnation, or resurrection?

Good questions. Not sure, off the top of my head—theses are better questions for the rules forum and a FAQ.

In general would you allow feats that add Str bonus such as Dragon Ferocity to be interchangeable with Dex if the PC had Agile enchantment? Or would that be a case by case issue for the rules forum?

** spoiler omitted **

I would not. Dexterity is already a SUPER useful skill. If you're going to add weapon damage to what it modifies along with so many skills, saves, AC, Initiative and attack rolls, that's already really good. Other feats that add Str bonus or otherwise manipulate or enhance Str bonuses do not play well at all with Agile.

Androids count as both humanoid and construct for things that target type. What were you thinking about the subtype for humanoid since things like favored enemy require one? Or, were you just thinking generically and they count as any/all humanoids? I ask as the ranger class gives specific subtypes and android, of course, is not on that list.

Android IS on the list. ANY type of humanoid can be selected as a favored enemy... just because we make up new ones after we've published the Core Rulebook doesn't mean things like androids and nagaji and trox and the like shouldn't be choices for Favored Enemies. Whether or not it's a GOOD choice depends on the campaign.

And frankly... it's probably more efficient to just pick Construct if you want to hurt androids with your ranger anyway.

You've mentioned before that a setting is made by what isn't there... What are the purposefully absent things in Golarion?

Conversely, what do you think makes Golarion interesting?

Off the top of my head? Full-on steampunk type stuff (although there's a little of that in Alkenstar). Lots of non-evil undead. Trains. Good drow. And there's a LOT more stuff once you move from Golarion down to regions or nations.

As for what makes Golarion interesting? All of it! I'm kind of the wrong person to ask on that, since the parts that don't make it interesting aren't things we go out of our way to include.

James,

Nex is described as a land who pursues and investigates magic without prejudice and preconceived notions. But it has been also a historical rival of the Necromantic kingdom of Geb.

With that in mind:

1) What would the arclords of Nex feel about one of their peers pursuing immortality through undeath (e.g. lichdom)?

2) How much of a secret is the knowledge required to acquire the feat eye of the arclord (inner sea guide pg. 286)? Is it a well guarded secret? Would the arclords teach it to outsiders (such as a paying student from a different nation)?

3) Assuming the third eye was something Nex (the archmage) developed, I imagine that another powerful wizard could (in theory at least) acquire something similar if exposed to similar knowledge. How do you feel about a variant "eye of the arclord" power granted through an arcane discovery (from ultimate magic)? My idea is renegade wizard who "stole" the secret of the eye, but developed different powers (with more of an evil bent to it).

As usual thank you for your time (hope you are enjoying PaizoCon)!

These are better questions for Erik to answer, but...

1) I suspect that happens now and then. Nex is anti-Geb, but that's not the same as anti-undead.

2) I would certainly let a PC learn the feat if they wanted. That's why it's in Inner Sea World Guide after all. I'd ask them to work into their character's back story WHY and HOW they learned it though.

3) Sounds cool to me!

Can you give a cryptic hint for the Gencon AP

We've so far not said much more about the Mummy's Mask Adventure Path aside from revealing the titles and authors. No plot info yet. Rob's the primary architect for it, so he'll be the one to ask for more info as time comes.

Erik DID mention "aliens" in his speech at the banquet, which wasn't quite accurate. At this point, we're not planning on including any Dominion of the Black elements in the AP, or many links to the countdown clocks mentioned in the earlier Kortes adventures. The "Mummy's Mask" is a lot less about that and a lot more about an ancient intolerant mummy.

No hints yet for the next AP. Gen Con isn't that far away, though!

Dear James Jacobs,

As the author of the "Cults of the Dark Tapestry" article in Pathfinder #42, how would you go about mechanically representing cultists/wizards of the Old Cults at your table with regards to the use of Planar Binding/Planar Ally style spells?

For instance, a Cultist of Azathoth casts Planar Ally- I'm having a hard time finding creatures in the Bestiary that are thematically Mythos and yet can meet the mechanical requirements of the spell (Outsider, not Aberration). Similarly for the archetypal wizard who "knows things that man was not meant to know" and his/her Planar Binding spell.

Ditto for cultists and their Summon Monster spell line- it seems odd for the cultists to be summoning Fiends and Demons rather than Mythos entities. Can you recommend a patch-over for this?

Thanks for any advice.

That was #46, I believe... but fortunately I know what one you're talking about...

I would create new spells. Stuff called, perhaps, "Eldritch Ally" or "Eldritch Binding." They'd work exactly the same, but would work on mythos creatures.

And I'd also make up new summon monster spells as appropriate too.

I had never heard of that feat until you linked it.

I think, as with ALL options in the game, questions about its balance will depend ENTIRELY on the group. And I generally try to avoid getting into "is this balanced or not?" discussions here on the internet, since those kinds of discussions are too often just arguments waiting to happen.

My philosophy: try out everything but let the player know you might later decide it's inappropriate. Don't be afraid to say later "Turns out that's not appropriate for my game, and I need you to pick a different feat."

And for PFS... if it ends up being broken, they'll fix it or ban it or whatever.

2) If this same John Doe has a ship, does the PC's get extra XP also for defeating the ship or the ship gets "calculated" in the CR of John Doe??

Is there any RAW on this?

Thanks as always.

1) Yes. Although I would NOT have a deus ex machina or other event make the NPC's escape from the earlier encounters guaranteed and automatic. If I plan for an NPC to be a recurring character and the PCs defeat him the first time they encounter him... good for the PCs! I'll make a new NPC to replace his role.

2) Ships don't have CR scores, and thus don't grant XP for being "defeated." You can certainly hand out story award XP to the PCs for capturing a ship if you want.

The group that has the greatest likelihood of succeeding in their schemes? What group or entity, that if it was unopposed by PCs, would cause the most serious harm to Golarion and its people short of destroying it? The thing that would unify the peoples of Golarion to try and stop it, a la the Gray Wardens in Dragon Age with the Darkspawn?
There isn't one "most dangerous danger" in Golarion. There's a lot of ties for that position. By making these dangers numerous and more or less equally deadly and dangerous, we can do multiple Adventure Paths and not have to worry about doing one that will make every one that follows anticlimactic.
So...which threat seems the scariest to you, personally? Which one would frighten you the most if they were to TAKE OVER THE WORLD?
Hmm. Probably Rahadoum.
Why is that Mr. James Jacobs?
Because religion is really important to Golarion, and because my characters tend to be pretty religious regardless of their class.
So what would make Rahadoum more frightening than, say, Cheliax?

The fact that if I were playing a cleric of Desna, I'd have an easier time being happy in Cheliax than I would in Rahadoum.

Hi James, long time no ask questions (holidays and suchlike). I have a few meandering queries on Thassilon, Runelords and Xin for you, if you have the time:

1) Runelord Krune has now, courtesy of PFS, been statted up (CR 18). Did you have much of a hand in giving him a statblock, or was it just general information?

2) Since he's CR 18, do you feel any safer about providing clearer CR or level references to the other Runelords, or at least Belimarius and Zutha considering that they bridge the gap between Krune and Karzoug? We seem to be getting closer to a full array of statted Runelords...

3) All the Runelords have had their Weapons of Rule as two-handed weapons, Major Artifacts created by Xin. While Xin seemed to be capable of creating seven Major Artifacts to symbolise their rule, why was he incapable of creating an eighth Alara'hai? It's mentioned that he could never achieve what his students did. Is there a reason?

4) These intelligent artifacts (despite their non-evil creator) appear to have evil alignments. Were they originally neutral/good (linked to the virtue rather than the sin) and slipped to evil through the influence of the Runelords?

5) Is the same true for the Runelords themselves, or at least the first seven? The visions shown in PF #66 seem to demonstrate jealousy and the signs of corruption, but were they always all-out-nasty from when Xin first took them with him from Azlant (or they followed him), or was it something that happened over time? If it's the former, then Xin probably isn't a very good judge of character. As in, at all.

6) Is there intended to be a definite sliding scale of power for the Weapons of Rule? Xanderghul's ais the most powerful and Krune's the weakest? Or do they all more or less sit around the same benchmark?

7) How would the intelligences of the artifacts come into play if they were wielded against one another? For example, if a Pathfinder group took down Krune, kept his weapon (and avoided having it gut them when they slept), and then wielded it against Karzoug? Are they interested in helping take down rival Runelords?

1) I provided a LOT of advice and suggestions and feedback for his stats, but did not do any of the actual design or development.

2) Krune is the weakest of the runelords. Take his stats as an example of the LOWEST and LEAST POWERFUL you'll see of all seven runelords. Belimaries and Zutha are both higher CR than Krune.

3) Yup; it's a case of the student outdoing the master, basically. Xin was a badass, but the runelords outpaced him.

4) Their evil alignments were results of the fall of the runelords from neutrality to evil. NOTE: Sin and virtue aren't inherently evil or good. Xin was lawful neutral, for example.

5) Some of the runelords, and certain Xanderghul and Sorshen, were evil from the start, but not all of them were. And even the evil ones weren't mustache-twirling obvious bad guys. Their fall to corruption was a long and at times subtle process. Xin's problem wasn't that he was a poor judge of character—he was more overconfident about how much control he had over them. That said... keep in mind that the runelords themselves aren't pushovers. They're high level. They're capable of tricking even powerful wizards like Xin.

6) Nope. They'll be pretty equal, I suspect, but maybe not.

7) The weapons aren't into helping take down rival runelords. You'll note that Karzoug's Burning Glaive has a special purpose to defeat non-spellcasters. It LIKES runelords and their kind. It's more about crushing the less-worthy non-spellcasting chumps of the world. Karzoug's Burning Glavie is very much pro-"caster edition."

3. When Telekinesis refer to a weapon standard damage means that is unmodified by anything else like magic properties and abilities the weapon may have?

1) I would never let someone do this. That's NOT the intent or point of the spell telekinesis. It's abuse of the rules writing.

2) Not in my game.

3) I'd say "unmodified by anything at all—just base weapon damage" and I'd limit it to one weapon at a time, making the use of a telekineticly-wielded weapon a VERY (and intentionally) sub-par use for the spell.

3. What's Arshea's CR? What evil beings are around his CR?

6. In Ultimate Campaign (p.76) "You might earn XP as a story award when your business earns its first 1,000 gp or first 100 points of Goods. " Any advice on creating a table for businesses similar to the one for kingdoms on p.215? Spefically, how much xp should each level of achievement get?

7. About how much downtime is there generally, as a result of the players, during the course of an adventure path?

8. Do you think aasimars and tieflings got shafted regarding their spell-like abilities? Seriously, just how useful is daylight or darkness? What sort of replacement abilities would you considered balanced?

9. Given Paizo's interest in the Mythos, how come Tok'l (what Mi-Go use their earthquake machines to mine for, and make brain cylinders out of) wasn't one of the seven skymetals?

10. What's the best way to get you interested in a new setting? For example, I want you to check out Touhou. What would you want to see?

1) Not sure; Wasn't from me. That's a better question for Wes.

2) Nope; not yet.

3) Unrevealed.

4) That's also a good question for Wes. (AKA: I don't have the book handy and don't know off the top of my head what his obedience demands.)

5) Dunno; see #4 above.

6) You should set the XP awards up as needed for your game. If you want the focus of the game to be about building stuff, then the XP should be on par with or above the rewards the PCs would get for an APL CR encounter. If the building stuff is a side-quest type event in your game, drop them lower. By manipulating how much XP goes out for this stuff, you can make your players be more or less inclined to spend time on it.

7) We generally leave that to GM preference. Could be only a few days, could be years. There might be implied time limits in some APs, but between adventures there's generally enough flexibility to have as little or as much down time as the GM wants.

8) No. Daylight and darkness can be VERY useful in the right situation, first of all. For my tiefling character in Rob's Way of the Wicked game, I have a trait that lets me do more damage in the dark, and having darkness as a spell like ability would be cool. Of course, that tiefling is a pitborn tiefling who took a prehensile tail or something like that as a variant ability. As for replacement spell-like abilities... check out Blood of Fiends or Blood of Angels for LOTS of suggestions for just that!

9) 3 reasons:
A) While I do quite love the mythos, I know not EVERYONE loves it. When we first started doing Pathfinder, we were very sparing and kind of tentative about including mythos elements. Customer reaction has been VERY encouraging, so we've been slowly but surly increasing the amount of mythos stuff we put into the game... but development of the rest of the game had to continue and couldn't wait.
B) The skymetals were first invented by James Sutter, and he's not as deep into the mythos stuff as I am. And since I'm not familir with tok'l myself (it's not from Lovecraft, I don't think... where's it from?), I'm sure Sutter's never even heard of it. The mi-go were certainly not a part of Golarion when he first invented the skymetals back in Pathfinder #14.
C) Since I'm pretty sure it's not from Lovecraft, chances are VERY good that the metal isn't in the public domain, and thus isn't something we can use in Pathfinder anyway.

10) I, alas, don't have an awful lot of time to check out new settings. I'll certainly check new ones out when I see them at conventions or in stores if the art is compelling and it's got an interesting and quick to pick up hook, or if it's from a writer/designer whose work I admire, or if a writer/designer whose work I admire recommends it... but if it's a homebrew type setting, I generally prefer to actually avoid looking too much at them for legal reasons. Turns out, being Creative Director of an RPG company can complicate some parts of being a gamer.

Antipaladins are a niche class; they're not one that we normally support, and they're an EXCELLENT example of why we've not done many new classes that create new spellcaster lists.

We DO keep releasing paladin spells, of course, and a GM should let antipaladins have access to those spells that make sense, and should probably consider allowing antipaladins to have access to evil versions of the good spells as well.

Cheers. I appreciate that (I didn't ask a very good question).

I more wondered if a Nostradamus-like wandering con man claiming the gift of prophecy would just get laughed out of town. I guess they'd just claim a different gift.

They'd probably be laughed out of town.

Remember, the primary reason we said "prophecy is dead" is that we find the whole "Prophesied hero" story element to be too tired and cliche to do much with of interest. And on top of that, players are already pretty good about doing what the GM doesn't expect—prophecy simply doesn't work well at all in a tabletop RPG.

James, do you think you'll ever come in italy for lucca comics and games?

What is going to be your favorite tale to tell after this years PaizoCon James?

5) Is the same true for the Runelords themselves, or at least the first seven? The visions shown in PF #66 seem to demonstrate jealousy and the signs of corruption, but were they always all-out-nasty from when Xin first took them with him from Azlant (or they followed him), or was it something that happened over time? If it's the former, then Xin probably isn't a very good judge of character. As in, at all.

He forgot to take any ranks in Sense Motive. And he dumped WIS. So he never even considered casting the spells that surely someone is going to say he could have cast to achieve some insight.

His is a tragic tale.

So how did your Unspeakable Futures game go?

Magus and Telekinesis

The old 3.5 Blade Storm is back >.<

1. Can you thrown 15 Greatswords(at caster Lv 15 of course) with Telekinesis Violent Thrust to deal 2d6 dmg with each sword No save, no spell resist?

2. A Magus using Spell Combat can use Telekinesis and throw 15 weapons using Intelligence modifier as the spell says plus his Intelligence modifier again if he use Arcane Accuracy Arcana?

All right. Thank you. Appreciated.

James,
Hi. Thanks for all your help!!!

When a wooden floor or ship's deck is on fire, the damage is 2d6/round on a failed safe.

1) The damage is always 2d6 regardless if 1 square or 20 squares caught fire?

2) Is this damage cumulative (spreading fire on a deck or floor)? Lets say first round 1 fire arrow ignited the wooden floor and next round 10 fire arrows ignited another section of the floor (10 new squares). Is it still 2d6 for all squares on fire?

Many thanks.

Hi James Jacobs!
I have a question about the supplement "Devine Favor: The Oracle". Do you support these rules? In particular, I like Grottesque curse for my new character. Do you support this curse?

Thank you

Heya James, hope you had a good 4th of July and Paizocon. Questions:

1) That garden that's in the positive energy plane, the one that the Jyoti guard so viciously, I think it was stated in The Great Beyond that the flowers in it are for mortals who ascended to godhood. I'm curious: are the flowers ONLY for mortals, or would there be some for the likes of beings that started out as neither divine nor mortal? For example, Sarenrae, Lamashtu, Dagon, etc.

2a) Has it ever been stated in any of the published books or AP parts just what the Cipher-Gates along the coast of Varisia are for?
2b) Or how old they are?
2c) Or whether the runelords had much to do with them?

3a) What does Mhar look like? Most interested in just how large it is, as I keep imagining it as similar to the Cloverfield monster, but a LOT bigger. It sounds like it's supposed to be bigger than the Oliphaunt of Jandelay, but I may be reading too much into that. Measurements in units of Godzillometers earn bonus points.
3b) Should Mhar awaken, what sorts of little beasties would it summon or have riding around on it / inside it?
3c) Was Mhar in any way an homage to Lavos, from Chrono Trigger?
3d) When did the Denizens of Leng first become aware it was sleeping down there?
3e) I think the only Great Old One / Outer God that was described in Pathfinder material as in any way not very intelligent or mindless was Azathoth. Are there any others in the multi-verse that might be similarly powerful but mentally dim / completely dark?

On Council of Thieves (#30)The Twice-Damned Prince, a Bag of Holding can be used to put out fires. A Type-I extinguish 3x3 square area which translates roughly to 36 buckets of water (using AP #30 "conversions") = 72 gallons of water.

How long does it take to fill a BoH-I with water (36 buckets)? Filling a single bucket is a move action.

Also, how does water retrieving works? It is not a solid object. Is it a move, standard, full round action.

Thanks Jacobs.

PS: I checked the Twice-Damned Prince (GM Reference) forum with no luck.

Wyroot (special material from Advanced Race Guide)

I guess the wording is a bit strange in an attempt to not making it too strong for Magus to have unlimited source of arcana pool or Monk/Ninja infinite Ki Pool, to keep the game balance. Magus could use a weapon and lower it critical up to 15-20 I believe, making it easy to make critical with Accurate Strike (Arcana that resolve all melee attacks into melee touch attacks)

I would like to know what is the intent or how it suppose to work this special material.

The weapons made of Wyroot never do any kind of damage or they dont do damage just on critical hits?

What is considered a melee weapon with a wooden haft?

Perhaps! We generally send a few folks there. We'll see who gets to go next time!
