1) Yes. Carrion Crown.

1a) It will happen again some day, yes.

2) Yes. Having all four iconics be human is an absolutely possibility. We might have done so already but I just can't remember.

3) It's possible, but unlikely because we tend to prefer using a combination of the personal favorite iconics of one of the five of us who order art for adventure paths (she's not one of our favorites), well-established iconics, and iconics that don't give artists a hard time with scaling issues; small iconics tend to end up weird sizes and require a lot more work and adjustment as a result to the art.

Do Succubi always drain a target when they kiss or engage in acts of pleasure? Or can they turn this off?

Right-o Big Dino,

But here my question meant what was your take on how come we had not made contact, or vice versa, with any thus far.

Or have our ancestors crossed paths with aliens before, and that's why there are pyramids all over the Earth, etc.

And what's with all the UFOs?

We haven't made contact yet because we've been alive and aware in only a tiny blip of the overall time existence has existed. If an alien intelligence can make the journey and happens to notice us, chances are also good that we wouldn't notice them. Do ants that live in the dirt notice the skyscraper looming above them? Can they even understand what a skyscraper is? What about the parasitic microbes that live in an ant?

And what's with all those UFOs is merely that they're flying objects that are not identified. You don't have to be an alien spaceship to be in the air and be unidentified.

Sorry if I already asked this before, but what would you set as the DC for a Knowledge Religion/History check to learn about Acavna?

What about to find out her sacrificing herself during Earthfall?

Why would people willingly truck (or its obvious rhyme) with a succubus then?

One of my players is going to be disappointed - he was hoping to figure out a succubus cohort next game, although knowing him he'd just suck it up and take the level drain anyway, because when you're an oracle with restoration anyway it's worth it for the fun. ;)

On a related note, is the energy drain a sustenance thing for the succubus (i.e. she needs to feed every so often to survive), a defensive/offensive mechanism, fun/an expression of their origin as especially lustful mortals, or some combination of all the above?

Some random questions:

Dark Souls series SPOILERS!:
What Covenant(s) have you joined, in any of the games?

Which NPCs' story arcs are your favorite, and why?

What do you prefer to do in the end at least in the last two games? Link the Fire? Let it fade? Why?

Would a cutlass with a sawback draw the ire of the Red Mantis for "copying" or "imitating" their sacred weapon? Or would they only notice if a GENUINE sawtooth sabre was discovered in the hands of an outsider, not caring if some sailor happened to modify his weapon to use as a crude carpentry tool in case of emergency?

Dragon Age II SPOILERS!:
What did you ultimately decide to do with Bartrand in the "Family Business" quest? Get him to the sanitarium for help or give him a mercy-kill?

Most people would NOT willingly do that, because obviously, it's bad for your health. That said, there's plenty of magic ways to prevent level drain from happening if you want to invest in protection.

I'd probably set it at DC 30 to know about her... but to learn about her sacrifice? That would require an adventure to (and in) a remote and probably dangerous library.

Feel free to change things as you want in your game, but I personally think it makes them more interesting if they can't turn it off. Remember, for 99.999999999999% of succubui, it's not an issue; that's how they feed and they enjoy causing pain and misery and all that. They're demons. Chaotic evil. Bad. For the rare few who don't want to do this, then it's them going against their very nature to NOT be a succubus; this is actually a plot point with a redeemed succubus in Wrath of the Righteous, in fact.

The energy drain thing is an offensive attack thing inspired by the mythology about them being vampiric type spirits that rob life force from mortals, but sanitized out of being in the realm of erotica/pornography/sex that we can't really talk about in the game for what I would think would be obvious (if unfortunate due to America's weird double standard regarding sex vs. violence in media) reasons.

No, I'm in agreement with you on the "can't turn it off" part - I was planning on going the redeemed/reluctant angle as well, and "can't turn it off" makes that more intriguing. But I figured the sacrifice becomes even more potent if giving that up means losing not only protection or enjoyment, but also missing out on the equivalent of a food source. Just figured I'd get the great T-rex's insight. :)

Dark Souls III

Spoiler:
I prefer the Warriors of Sunlight. I join all the covenants I find just to keep the options open though. The NPC storylines are interesting, but so bare-bones and so left open to interpretation that they really aren't super memorable to me—the implied storyline of the Dark Souls games is cool, but is hardly front and center and not something that sticks in my mind NEARLY as much as the art direction, level design, and game play.

Red Mantis
Of course it would annoy them. In world, what makes a weapon a weapon is its appearance as much as anything else. If you make something look like a sawtooth sabre, even though it isn't, if it's close enough that you'd be worried the Red Mantis would be offended, then you'd pretty much be right to worry.

Dragon Age

Spoiler:
I barely remember that quest. It's been... what... half a decade since I played Dragon Age II?

Alanis Morissette has a song, Ironic, which lists various purportedly ironic things.

Some argue that the items listed are not, in fact, ironic and that therefore the song itself is ironically misapplying irony.

Others suggest that cosmic irony is a thing, and thus that Morissette's listed events actually ARE ironic... making the dismissal of them as non ironic, itself ironic.

So, presumably Misroi was looking for your take on this debate.

Do you find yourself wishing you still didn't know what the question meant? :]

I was under the impression, as of Inner Sea Faith's Achaekek entry, that the Red Mantis are actually not at all touchy about Sawtooth Sabres being used by others (since it spreads fear of the weapon), reserving their ire for those who wear Mantis Masks and Red Mantis regalia. Is this not correct?

You mean mice and dolphins? ;)

Orcas and crows (plus ravens and magpies) have demonstrated problem-solving intelligence, while elephants and dolphins are both self-aware. I remember an article I read a couple of months back about some ape/monkey/somethingorother possessing limited tools as well. Of course, the real rulers of the world are the cats, as any cat's "owner" (read: household staff) is aware.

To bring this back with an actual question or two, however.

James, when developing an AP, what's generally the final stage for making modifications and edits to the adventure on the development end versus editing end, and how long is that usually before it's sent to the printers and/or the notice of the AP installment names appears here on the website or at various cons? I'm curious about how long they exist "in-house" at Paizo offices before people are made aware.

And have there been times when you've needed to frantically drag something back from the printers at the last minute (or past the last minute) for whatever reason?

That doesn't look like a sawetooth sabre at all, especially because the serrations aren't on the blade; sawtooth sabres have larger teeth and they're on the cutting surface of the blade, not the backside. Of course, I'm not the one you need to worry about interpreting it that way since I'm not your GM...

That's also a good point. The more folks who use sawtooth sabres, the more their reputation spreads. So it isn't really a factor for using something that looks LIKE one... but still, if you want to avoid being noticed (for good or bad) by the Red Mantis, might be safest to avoid using a sawtooth at all.

The final stage for making changes to the adventure is technically upon approving the printer proof PDF—after we ship the file to the printer, a few days pass and then the printer sends us back a PDF of the product as it will appear in print, and if we have any changes at that point, we can still make them. It costs $$$ to change things at that point though, so it's a case of "Is this change worth the cost in time and money?" We thus try hard to make sure all the changes and adjustments happen before we send those files to the printer in the first place, but changes keep happening right up to the very last hour there in some cases.

These changes are generally not huge changes to stat blocks or storylines—but they can be (in some cases this can delay the product's shipment to the printer too, which is bad).

We have indeed had to frantically "drag something back" from the printer to fix some stuff, yes. Not gonna tell folks what those fixes are, though, due to the internet's habit of latching onto errors with such tenacity that they end up being talked about more than the actual stuff we WANTED folks to talk about.

This is a reference to the 1961 novelty song, "Who Put the Bomp (in the Bomp, Bomp, Bomp)" by Barry Mann. The song made fun of the then-popular doo-wop style of pop music that included lots of nonsense lyrics... by being a doo-wop song with lots of nonsense lyrics.

Honestly, using the Race Builder rules and using the HUGE number of abilities as templates to balance new abilities against is the best way to do it. That's the same way spells and monsters and items and feats are designed—come up with something neat, compare it to things that are similar, and keep an open mind down the road if something ends up being too powerful or weak and thus be willing to adjust.
