1) Can a preparation ritual be copied from one spellbook into another (i.e., learning and scribing a spell)?

2) Can the preparation ritual be placed into a spellbook using an item creation feat (e.g., Craft Wondrous Item or Scribe Scroll)?

3) If a preparation ritual can not be copied nor created how do they get into a spellbook originally?

1) Up to your GM, but I'd say yes.

2) Not on its own.

3) By a combination of research and item creation.

Thanks James!

In the prepared rituals section it says “These books also work as spellbooks ... for new characters.” Does this imply a spellbook is “owned” if the wizard has possession (e.g., gift from his master, inheritance, etc.) but borrowed if only temporarily in his possession? There’s several caveats on a borrowed spellbook (spell must be recorded in his own spellbook, must make a Spellcraft check (DC 15 + spell's level)” every time) that would make it hard for a new character.

Do Azers have a deity? I can't see a LN society worshiping CE Ymeri, Queen of the Inferno.

Dear Tyranosaurus,

do you think Jotungrip and swashbucklers finesse with slashing finesse work together?

I´m seeing a halfling barbarian/swashbuckler mix there wielding a nodachi.
Maybe wouldn´t even need DEX to damage that way and for sure something else than a scimitar dervish dancing clone.

Also do you see a way for viable shortspear wielding swashbucklers?
How it is they probably would be short on grit, excuse me, panache because of their low crit chance.

Would you allow a scroll for a mythic spell in your game? I.e.: One that allows you to expend mythic power to cast the spell as mythic? How about a scroll that allows the reader to cast a mythic spell without being mythic? How would you suggest pricing it? I would think using the Ascendent Spell feat as guidance (+5 spell level), if you did that would you also require the CL to be 10 higher?

Frankly... these questions are better asked of the rules team. I wasn't involved in the creation of these things, and so if you want it straight from the proverbial horse's mouth, you should ask them.

If I were designing them, I would have either made up a new item creation feat to cover their creation or I would have lumped it in under Create Scroll or Create Wondrous Item.

Probably not, unless the scroll was an artifact... which is kinda weird.

I'm not sure what Jotungrip is, but judging ONLY by the name, I would say it doesn't mix with swashbucklers simply because the flavor of the name and the class are incompatible. Swashbucklers are swift and lithe and showy, and "Jotun" makes me think of lumbering immense giants.

Not every weapon choice needs to be or SHOULD be equally viable for every class. There's a reason when you see or imagine swashbucklers, they're usually using similar weapons like rapiers. You can already make a shortspear wielding swashbuckler, but you trade in some power for the unusual flavor is all. Which is fine. I made a starknife wielding swashbuckler for a playtest and she was great fun to play, even though I wasn't critting nearly as much as I would have with a rapier.

Have you ever made an organization or group in a game that was inspired by another, but you wanted it sufficiently distinct?

Do you have an example you could share?

Does the name make the man or the man make the name (or organization)?

Jotungrip is the second level ability of a titanmauler barbarian.

I asked that because i believe the language there to be allowing this combination, which i guess might be showing up in PFS at some time and possibly lead to some wild discussions, business as usual^^

Yes. The Red Mantis was originally a new name for Greyhawk's Scarlet Brotherhood in my homebrew setting. I wanted a group of badass assassins, and there was a lot of material for the Scarlet Brotherhood out there I could use as a springboard, but I wanted it to be my own organization as well. I didn't have time to fully detail them for the campaign in which they first appeared since the PCs were suddenly up against them without my foresight, so at first I used Scarlet Brotherhood info but re-skinned their appearance and name to the Red Mantis, and as that campaign progressed I started building my own lore about the Red Mantis that slowly but surely diverged them more and more from the Scarlet Brotherhood, until they're more or less how they appear today in Golarion. They share a job (assassin) and color theme (red/scarlet) still, but that's pretty much it.

That doesn't help too much... I assume "titanmauler" is an archetype? If so... then you don't have to worry about it really, since a swashbuckler can't take a barbarian archetype. I suppose you could multiclass... but that's using tools not the way we anticipated or intended... you can use a spoon as a screwdriver in the right situation, but it might have unexpected or frustrating results. Same goes for adding one class's archetype powers onto another not-even-yet-finalized class's powers.

Now, when you throw PFS into the mix... you make it even more complex, since PFS GMs lack the ability to make significant house rule adjudications. If you want to save yourself a lot of frustration, I would recommend not doing something like this and saving the idea for a home campaign.

Hi James!

1) I have notice there are many Bard archetypes that are suited for melee builds but no one that is really well suited for archery (at least not to my knowledge). Is there any special reason for this?

2) Are there any plans for any new bard archetype that are more suited for archery?

3) If not, can we hope for one in the future?

4) If you would play an archer Bard today, what archetype would you play? Would you even play an archetype or would you play a core Bard?

Yeah, only i´m the one running PFS probably and hopefully not seeing something like that.

Wouldn´t it be interesting and good for you guys to tweak that playtest and developing process a bit, making more use of your great GM and player base to find out about such things, incorporating them and and in the end eventually developing a more rounded out product?
Just a suggestion, not that i wouldn´t love my Pathfinder and spend way to much time with it^^

Tweaking the rules is exactly what the playtest is for. I hope you let the folks over in the design department know about your observation, even if the playtest is over... but it's a REALLY pretty obscure combination. We can't possibly hope to cover and account for all of them, and that's just part of the rough edges a massively multiplayer campaign like PFS has to deal with.

You know, back in the old days, the RuneQuest game had a gridded chart of all the major deities so you could look and see if one god was a friend of, polite to, rival of, enemy of, or uncaring about another god. That would make a great tool for all these questions, perhaps for the IS Gods... or a blog post or something. What do you think?

I kinda feel that listing the deities' alignments does just as good a job as an arbitrary chart of alliances and rivalries. Unusual exceptions, such as Shelyn's association with Zon-Kuthon, aren't well served by charts anyway.

They range in color from rusty red to dark brown, but they all have a bright green stinger. Females tend to be less brightly colored, with the brightness of the stinger increasing as the scorpion ages.

The rules can be proofed against ignorance, but not from deliberate munchkin malice. The type of weapons that jotungrip would be intended for, are by definition, not finessable.

How exactly is the ban on religion enforced in Rahadoum? Are exposed religious people fined and exiled? Are they enslaved? Are they cajoled into deconverting? Are they rounded up and tortured to death in Nazi-style camps?

Or is it more that the average religious believers in Rahadoum already left and the only ones who still hold religious beliefs are active rebels looking to subvert the law, and are thus treated like anyone guilty of treason or similar crimes would be?

That's correct; posting questions there allows other folks to hit the FAQ button and that's how the rules team follows those questions. Another option is to post in the product's page; often other folks who know the answers can provide feedback.

Not everyone at Paizo answers questions on these boards with equal fervor.

He'd be chaotic evil. Domains would probably be Chaos, Evil, Fire, and Destruction. Favored weapon would probably be something like a mace or club... but I'd want to re-read Cthugha stories and notes first before putting that in print.

Of course... the only reason Cthugha exists is because August Derleth needed a "fire deity" to justify his theory that Lovecraft's mythos followed the classic elements in organization, an interpretation I don't really like much at all, so chances of me seeking out the rights to stat up Cthugha pale in compassion to, say, any of the deities invented by Ramsey Campbell.

There are specific tattoos for the schools, and I believe we've published them somewhere... but I could be wrong. I can't remember off the top of my head where we did, IF we did... or if they're just internal images we haven't yet released.

That last is the most likely, and not because we're trying to be jerks. We really aren't all that interested in assigning meanings to the made-up words and runes of fantasy languages, because if we do so, that means we suddenly have to proof read and edit EVERY piece of artwork when an artist puts runs in the image. And as you can imagine, changing errors in those types of runes is very VERY difficult... the artist or art director would have to go in and retouch or rework the art by hand, and that's not something we have the time or resources to do.

We haven't said really how "exactly" Rahadoum enforces that, although I believe the novel "Death's Heretic" goes into it. Remember, Rahadoum isn't evil, so there's not death camps in the nation. It's less extreme.

You asked what I thought of, and as it turns out, using the word "man" as a synonym for "humanity" is one of my big pet peeves, so what I thought of was that it would have been better to ask, "It is the nature of humanity to want what he can't have. So he dreams of Utopia." I don't mind the use of the masculine pronoun there, since that's kinda what English forces us, although the feminine one works just as well obviously... and using the word "humanity" instead of a capitalized "Man" makes the masculine pronoun seem less exclusionary.

As for the phrase itself? Feels old-fashioned and outdated for the reasons I just detailed above.
