Sage advice. I think I'll do that.

If an intelligent weapon tries to take mental control over a ghost who is possessing the body of an intellect devourer who is riding in the body of a Veiled Master... how can this question become more silly?

I have two issues that you might help me with:

2) The Cassisian Angel as a familiar feels too powerful for a level 7 feat (specially since it gives you access to a 5th level cleric spell with no component cost). Is my perception skewed? Is there a reasoning to remove the Faerie Dragon from the list, but leave the Cassisian Angel?

Thank you. :)

You'll find that a lot of the Improved Familiars grant commune. Nearly every extraplanar (The Lyraken I know also grants commune)

Thank you Xevious and James for the perspective. :)

James, what are your thoughts on this?

My paladin 9/cavalier 1 found a Figurine of Wondrous Power (bronze griffon). My GM is going to allow me to use the griffon as my cavalier's mount, which is really awesome.

Here is my question: if you want the creature that comes from a Figurine of Wondrous Power (in this case, the griffon)to wear an item - say, an exotic saddle, barding or maybe even some sort of magic collar of protection or something, will that item stay with the creature when it turns back into the Figurine, or will the worn item(s) just fall off and drop to the ground? I can't find any rules on this, and I'm trying to figure out if I'm, going to need to carry this stuff in a bag of holding or something and put it on my griffon every time he appears ...

Thanks!

Can you fix the rules for falling? They are outdated and foolishly simple. Fall time is not taken into account for high distances. A high drop is not life threatening to a high level character ever. I believe the cap on damage should be raised. Once maximum velocity is achieved, I believe there should be a variable fall rate depending on a flow chart for wind resistance. It doesn't have to become extremely complicated, but it can be more expansive than a 6 second or less drop from any distance at a 20d6 damage cap. Your thoughts?

Not without making them unnecessarily complicated, and not without including them as part of a new edition.

The falling rules are fine, in my opinion. The fact that falling isn't life-threatening to a high level character is part of the game's design—being stabbed with a sword is similarly not life threatening to a high level character, as is falling into lava or being stepped on by an elephant.

I've played in games where falling damage is much more lethal, and it's fundamentally NOT fun, because suddenly the game has one whole element that's unusually and unnecessarily more deadly than anything else. It's a HUGE disconnect to be a 17th level character who's fighting a Gargantuan red dragon and is holding their own, but then suddenly to get killed by a 30 foot fall.

AKA: If we "fix" the falling rules, we have to "fix" pretty much everything that does damage in the entire game to match that adjustment.

And since I don't think the falling rules are broken, then I don't see the need to make such a drastic, new-edition-level change to the game. House rules for falling damage are your best bet, but again... take care, because the "quest for realism" in this case and in my opinion is also a "quest for ending your game because the players aren't having fun." [/QUOTE}

Good point. Thank you for your response. However, I do believe if one of the PCs decide to dive in from the stratosphere to a land war, I will make take more than one round to reach the battle. :)

James, when can we expect to see a full-on HP Lovecraftian campaign set in Golarion?

How would you price out a once per week magic item? I've got an idea for a magic shield I'd like to give out in my campaign that has a number of daily charges, but once per week one of those charges can be activated as an immediate action, but it drains that charge for 7 days.

The best thing I can think of is to divide the price of a once per day version of an item by 7 and add it to the overall price.

The other method would be to simply go with an abstract 'gut feeling' price increase.

How would you handle s uch an item?

I know you guys at Paizo already published Wake of the Watcher in the Carrion Crown adventure path as well as Crucible of Chaos. Hello James Jacobs,

What are your opinions on the PS4 that was recently announced?

"My comment didn't mention Sorshen at all. It talked about Ileosa, who is NOT Sorshen."

1. You did say "the main enemy would end up being the city of Korvosa... likely with some Ileosa or Runelord involvement." What other Runelord would be interested in Korvosa?

2. Speaking of Ileosa…:
How would Curse of the Crimson Throne be different if she were possessed by Sorshen instead of some generic dragon?

3. What exactly makes Ileosa a great bad gal? Isn't she kind of a whiny brat?

4. You mentioned the giants that Sorshen preferred, but what giants did she prefer to avoid using? (That's what "eschew" means.)

Hi James!

Some questions relating to Razmir:

1) In the Campaign Setting supplements, it's made pretty explicit that Razmir is a false god. But what is the general opinion in Golarion? Do most people believe he's a crazy deity or do they think he's just a powerful wizard?

2) If you were to outline an adventure focused around players interfering with Razmir acquiring the Sun Orchid Elixer, for what level PCs would you want it to be?

3) Would the PCs tangle with Razmir himself or just his agents?

4) Where would it be set? Thuvia? Razmiran? Somewhere between?

5) Who would you want to write it and why?

6) I think the fighter has plenty of combat options already. I would STRONGLY push to dump the iterative attacks though so fighters could move about and use their feats more freely without feeling like they're playing the game wrong by not five-foot-adjusting so they don't lose their invaluable full attack action.

I think fighter do good in combat, the question was about OUT of combat options though, (partiulary I would like 4+int skill per level).

If you want a "fighter with more skill points" you should play a ranger or a barbarian.

And if you try to make the fighter be a class that does more stuff out of combat, you need to realize that you're stepping on the toes of characters like bards and rogues and the like, so don't be surprised if those characters want some of the same attention and want upgrades IN combat. That said, "out of combat" options for ALL classes are pretty much the whole point of the upcoming "Ultimate Campaign" book.

As in, a full-on Lovecraftian Adventure Path?

If I felt like I could get away with something like that, I would have already. But Lovecraft isn't everyone's favorite, and tying an entire AP to such a specific theme is risky. It gets LESS risky each time we do an AP, and each time we publish something Lovecraft related, since those publications tend to be good sellers.

Hopefully some day we'll do a full-on Lovecraft inspired AP.

I would price it the same as a once-per-day item. I'm not a fan of tinkering with an item's price by making it less usable to that extent. For better or worse, the gp value of an item is the only mechanic in the game that limits when a magic item can be expected to enter play as something the PCs have access to. Lowering the cost of something like this ends up giving the PCs access to effects that they shouldn't have.

And if you lower the cost TOO much, then it becomes more feasible simply to buy a new item rather than wait for a week.

Several.

Rise of the Runelords has Lovecraftian elements.

Feast of Ravenmoor has some Lovecraftian themes.

Into the Nightmare Rift has SIGNIFICANT Lovecraft elements (including monsters like nightgaunts and bholes and flying polyps).

Thornkeep has a level under it ruled by a mi-go.

From Shore to Sea has Lovecraftian themes.

And we often drop monsters from Lovecraft into our adventures, such as gugs, denizens of Leng, Leng spiders, shoggoths, and the like. These monsters create "micro Lovecraft elements" in adventures that otherwise wouldn't have Lovecraft elements.

In addition, several of our books, such as "Into the Darklands" or "Distant Worlds" have strong Lovecraftian elements in them.

So, yeah... there's a lot of Lovecraft in Golarion.

2) If we'd done that change to Curse of the Crimson Throne, we would have overindulged on runelords. There's more to the world than runelords. Also, doing so would undermine Ileosa as the main bad girl too much. She's SUPPOSED to be the focus of the whole AP, not someone else.

3) Her ambition, her vanity, her wealth, and her charisma make her a great villain. I don't see her as a whiny brat at all, but as a manipulative, egotistical, conniving, intelligent mastermind who more or less took control of the largest city in Varisia with a largely bloodless (at first) coup.

4) I know what "eschew" means. She avoided using the ones I didn't list, but particularly marsh giants and hill giants—the ugly and/or dumb ones.

It seems that some of the parameters for the mythic rules have changed. Now I'm curious. Previously, I think someone stated that the mythic rules would allow us to fight up to CR 36 demigods, but that it would not allow us to fight gods. Now you're saying that anything beyond CR 30 is a god.

Does this mean that CR 30 is now the toughest thing that the mythic rules will add support for? If this is true, aren't you concerned about the mythic rules giving the players 10 additional 'levels' to gain, but only 5 more CRs worth of enemies to fight?

Edit: I apologize, it turns out you already answered part of this in another topic. I have to say thought that I'm surprised that 10 tiers ended up not being as powerful as you guys thought. I guess you guys didn't want to give everyone huge ability score boosts to keep up with 10 CRs worth of difficulty increase?

Yes; some of the parameters have changed—that was a direct result of feedback from the playtest, which is the whole point of a playtest—to change things and adjust things based on that feedback.

Originally, I had envisioned CR 36 being the cap for demigods, but that was a number I picked BEFORE work started on Mythic. I picked CR 36 because in the old BECMI D&D game, 36 was the level cap, and that number held nostalgic value.

As it worked out, CR 30 is more appropriate. We'll have advice on how to build monsters up to CR 30 in the book (for example; we'll be extending Table 1–1 from the Bestiary up to CR 30), and that's likely the toughest you'll see us stat up monsters in print... but in theory, one could extend that table upward as far as you want.

For the purposes of Pathfinder, though, CR 30 is the cap for power.

Tiers aren't the same as levels, so I'm not concerned at all that there's only five more CRs worth of enemies to fight. In fact, that means we can support those new five CRs MORE than if we went to CR 36 or some other arbitrary higher number.

Is it safe to say that the more Lawful a deity is, the more likely they are to have inquisitors? I have a hard time figuring out what an inquisitor of a CN faith is devoted to combatting, as they don't really have church 'laws.'

Church Sanctions. Such as a Inquisitor of Cayden who prevents the destruction of Breweries.

Huh. I see her as someone who got her power purely by luck, but then I lack an insider perspective. Maybe it's her upper-class racism that irks me.

Ah. Sorry about misunderstanding you, I have trouble understanding implicit answers. Anyway…

1. So Sorshen didn't use fire giants for her forges?

2. Pathfinder #66 (p.73) says she used marsh giants to protect shipping, but Pathfinder #1 (p.75) says she used "ocean giants." Which one's correct?

4. Since rune giants are based on evil samurai, would kurosho (Giants Revisited, p.42) be anything like shogi? Did Thassilon have kurosho?

5. Taking the reworked mythic rules into account, how do you plan to rework the CRs of the various demon lords (CRs given in p.55-63 of Pathfinder #18)?

6. What'll Nocticula's and Socothbenoth's CRs be?

7. What would be the CR of a level 20 tier 10 wizard?

They would enforce Besmara's Code, hunting down and punishing all those who violate the words laid down to detail the treatment of crew, treasure and captives!

They would enforce the three aphorisms at the core of the Code, punishing any who claim to sail as a pirate that don't hold these tenets dear.

Mr. Jacobs,

A question came up with a game I'm in recently regarding the Ragechemist ability Sturdy Rage. With the errata to Rage Mutagen to only add a +2 increase to strength over what the mutagen gives, do the same form of errata apply to sturdy rage as well?

If not how would you rule the ability works?

Spoiler:

So an Estoc is a longsword that does piercing damage, a Jian is a short sword that does slashing damage, and a Flamberge is a greatsword that has the Jarring property. The changes are easy enough that you can homebrew them if reskinning them is too much of a problem (which I think was that point Azaelas Fayth was trying to make). If you or your group are geeking hard enough after more accurate mundane arms/armor I would think you would have a blast homebrewing them up for your games.

Sorry for derailing the thread.

Dear Mr. Jacobs,

In my previous post, you missed "3) Would the PCs tangle with Razmir himself or just his agents?"

Or was that an artful dodge designed to sidestep the fact that Razmir might be a Mythic character and stat-ing him up implies that he can, in fact, be killed?

5) Are you a fan of the Avatar: The Last Airbender TV show? Do you think one could use d20 to make a good RPG for it?

You might want to check out the Element Bending Monk thread on this forum from some time back.

Hey James,

Some random questions.

1) Which country/region of Golarion do you think was the most risky? Meaning one that you felt might be unpopular with the fans.

2) Ever had a character you created you thought would be cool, but after a few sessions it either got old? Or it just did not work out?

3) How many different GMs have you played with?

4) Do you perfer to be a player or a GM?

5) What is your worst failure as a GM?

6) What is your biggest sucess as a GM?

James' biggest failure as a GM is not having any failures to speak of. Ever.

Also, please don't crash my bubble. You're my demigod of GMing. <3

Ah but we learn from the mistakes of others...even the mistakes of demigods. (Heck the entire Greek mythology and pantheon is based on that)
