Do you think a person can be good despite taking immense joy in the suffering of others?

Last time I had to read the last rites to a dead child at a funeral, I felt like laughing out loud.

Not because the situation was absurd, but because the sight of the people mourning amused me.

I do not. To me, "taking immense joy in the suffering of others" is pretty much the definition of evil.

So, I'm cursed into a damned existence in spite of my insistence of protecting others from harm and helping those in need?

I wouldn't personally say she registers as Evil, since her behaviour is all Neutral Good while her thoughts are pretty Evil on occasion.
The only active hurting she does is against undead, and when she jokes about something exceptionally morbid. And of course her earlier example.

In Golarion, yes, you'd probably end up being damned in the afterlife unless you managed to outweigh the evil of taking joy in another's suffering with good acts. Keeping that joy hidden and not acting on it certainly helps.

But a character who enjoys the suffering of others but who protects others from harm and helps those in need isn't neutral good, unless the character's insane. If the character is not insane, that alignment feels more lawful neutral to me; someone who enjoys suffering but has a regimented focus on helping others despite the fact that they're secretly a sadist.

It's not so much insanity as it is the natural drive of a Tiefling to be Evil, which is canon in Golarion too.

However, just because she enjoys sadism doesn't mean she lacks a conscience, on the contrary actually in her case.

She dislikes the fact, and she does enjoy helping others too. The problem is that the sadism kind of is more enjoyable for her at times.

How do they view same sex relationships, particularly those between 2 men?

That depends on the archdevil.

What's to stop a powerful wizard from using a handmaiden devil to easily purchase and transport slaves from afar? It would certainly seem more practical than slow and easily-targeted caravans.
Nothing... although as with most outsiders, the handmaiden devil can't really teleport with her captured victims.
But her greater teleport stats say "(self plus 1 entrapped creature and 50 lbs. of goods only)," and I checked both the SRD and Bestiary 2.

Oh! I thought that was in there, but my quick scan of the ability missed it.

So yeah... the only thing stopping a spellcaster from using it to transport slaves and whatever is the fact that it's inefficient if the caster can teleport himself, since teleport's a less complex, lower level spell.

So…what were the logistics of Sorshen's slavery operations? She was too busy to do everything herself, and any of her wizards powerful enough to teleport (especially if it were thousands of miles) had better things to do. While she could have spices ships bring home slaves on the return trip, a ship plus crew costs money and risks getting raided.

Given that greater planar binding costs nothing, and a handmaiden devil can move the same amount of goods a ship can but in less time, why wouldn't Sorshen press the fiends into shipping? Why wouldn't it be cost-effective?

I've never really figured that out. Pharasma's the oldest. Desna's up there as well. So is Rovagug. Also Gozreh. And number 5 is probably Sarenrae or maybe Asmodeus.

You like to answer questions in batches so here's some more to speed up the answers. ^_^

Edit: Uncanny timing...

1. Besides demons, what Pathfinder subjects could you go on and on about?

2. What is it you like so much about demons?

3. Are there any newspapers in Avistan?

4. Did Thassilon get any use out of ogres?

5. What was the inspiration behind Korvosa?

Sorshen was the most powerful enchanter of her time. Think of her deal as a pyramid scheme; she'd charm/dominate a dozen folks capable of charming and dominating... all the way on down.

Greater planar binding costs nothing in GP, but it can come back and bite you if you abuse your power over things you summon. Plus... teleport's easier to cast than is greater planar binding anyway. It's not cost effective in THAT way. Not in GP, but in magical resources; why would Sorshen bother doing what she could do herself with a 5th level spell... or heck, a 7th level spell like greater teleport... with an 8th level spell that takes longer to cast and requires interaction and aid of an intermediary. All that assuming Sorshen's interested in dealing with devils at all in the first place... which she might not be.

1) They can be found anywhere in the Inner Sea region. They're from other planets, after all. We put them in there because while they're not from the Inner Sea region, we wanted to stat them up anyway since Distant Worlds was so popular.

2) All of them... depending on the nature of the campaign.

3) Favorite I created = Nightripper, or maybe the fungus queen. Favorite I didn't create = not sure.

4) None of them have been statted up yet so I can't say for sure... and until Mythic's more locked in, I'm not really ready to say in public where her power level ends up as compared to the others.

5) They're there whenever we'll need to stat them up. Note that some classes and races (particularly races) aren't going to have legendary or mythic examples... especially when you get to relatively minor races that don't have a big impact in the Inner Sea region like catfolk, or relatively new or unutilized classes like summoners or gunslingers.

6) Probably.

7) We've not revealed where halflings come from in Golarion to my knowledge. No rush to detail the genesis of any of the races you listed.

8) Saw Skyfall recently; it was great! Also saw Argo, and it was great as well. Probably going to see Lincoln tomorrow or Sunday.

9) The one where two friends (one of whom was GM) conspired to have another friend's character assassinated without involving that friend's input in the fight. I wasn't actually part of that Shadowrun campaign, but the result more or less had one of my friends end up avoiding me simply out of association with the two conspirators for the better part of a year. Pretty lame.

What constitutes an ongoing condition? Battle Herald and Pathfinder Chronicler have abilities that allow you to retry a save on something referred to as an ongoing condition, though that subset of conditions isn't listed.

I gave a shot at a list, parsed from the master list of conditions:

Spoiler:

Bleed
Blinded
Confused
Cowering
Dazed
Dazzled
Deafened
Energy Drained
Entangled
Exhausted
Fascinated
Fatigued
Frightened
Helpless
Nauseated
Panicked
Paralyzed
Petrified
Shaken
Sickened
Staggered
Stunned
Unconscious(?)

Cursed and diseased aren't listed as conditions though you can garner either by failing a saving throw. Do they qualify?

Specific text for Pathfinder Chronicler is here under Live to Tell the Tale.

Specific text for the Battle Herald is here under Shake it Off.

2) Both. Neither aspect was first.

Only Norgorber, Iomedae, and Cayden Cailean have actually done the test of the starstone to successfully become deities.

1) Any class. Dual wielding a gun and a melee weapon is something that, like in Pathfinder, any class can do. If you want a class that does it better than others, you'll probably be looking at a gunslinger or a mercenary or maybe a survivalist or a scavenger.

2) Human, Android (which looks pretty similar to the Inner Sea Bestiary android), Half-ghoul (not the undead ghoul, but the Lovecraft ghoul), Deep One Hybrid, Fosterling (a mutant from magic rather than science), Serpentfolk, and Troglodyte (more like the Hadals from "The Descent," not lizard people).

3) Yes. Fosterlings get mutations more quickly, but anyone can gain mutations; they're handled as feats.

4) Not really.

5) Not really. There are flaming weapons and frost weapons and the like, as per the normal rules. Also chainsaws and monofilament whips and a few more tech weapons. The focus is more on ranged weapons than melee in the game though.

6) Yes. I played a LOT back in college when the game first came out, although I didn't get into the game until the tail end of Antiquities. Played pretty solidly up through Homelands; at the time I drifted away there, I'd collected every red card in the game.

An ongoing condition is any effect that has a duration. Disease and poison and curses aren't conditions but afflictions; the power doesn't work against them. The list of conditions you've listed is pretty solid, although remember that some conditions arise from effects that don't allow saves to resist them, like unconsciousness from damage or most bleed effects; these wouldn't qualify.

Whatever gave the starstone that power, it had nothing to do with aboleth magic. The starstone already had that power in space; the fact that the aboleths pulled it out of the sky along with all the rest of the space rocks is coincidence... an ironic coincidence, considering the depths of aboleth atheism and disdain for the divine and hatred of faith.

James, there is an interesting thread in the rule section: "there are druid spell relate to animal and plant fertility?".
That generated a small discussion and my question for you:

Paizo has ever considered to product a supplement with spells with mundane uses?
From a unseen servant that can cook a gourmet dinner (a 2nd edition rip of, I should admit) or do the dishes, a ease of childbirth spell for divine casters and so on.
I think that it would be a interesting argument for a supplement or a chapter of the campaign book.

Two questions about changelings:

The hulking changeling don't get a height and weight increase?

Hi James Jacobs, I have a little question: in Dwarves handbook some deities have "hammer" as favoured weapon. It means "light hammer" or "warhammer"? I supposed warhammer, since in the section of feats in this manual a requisite of a feat is "proficiency with hammer" and the description talks about warhammer. Thank you

Jade Regent question here and I don't believe it has spoilers.

Our last game on Saturday came to a halt because nobody could agree on how a spell works and the GM would not get involved, so I am curious on how this is supposed to work. Can the spell Make Whole repair carvan/individual wagon damage? Some players said if it did, it would be cheating cause then we would not need wainrights. my argument was that the whole point of those kinds of spells is to be a faster workaround to doing things manually. So yeah, how would Make Whole work with the caravan stuff? Also one player is arguing that create food and drink doesn't make more food as the caster levels up in Jade Regent cause the spell was altered for the game. What is he talking about? Cause he wont cite sources.

Also Do you know anything about Shadowrun? Because I have questions about that too.

You are trained in using your agility in melee combat, as opposed to brute strength.

Benefit: With a light weapon, rapier, whip, or spiked chain made for a creature of your size category, you may use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on attack rolls. If you carry a shield, its armor check penalty applies to your attack rolls.

Special: Natural weapons are considered light weapons.

The phrase "Natural weapons are considered light weapons" apply only when using weapon finesse or natural weapons count as light weapons for every use of that definition, as a (very relevant) example when a magus use spell combat?

2) A magus can use spell combat with natural weapons?

3) How is that a claw attack deal B/S damage in Pathfinder? It seem a bit counter intuitive.

James I was curious about the items vaguely described in chapter 3 of the Ultimate Equipment book. The items used by Aram the Golden-Heart because I have a player who has been 'researching' the history of this legend and wants to either a) recreate them or b) retrieve them.

Hi James,

question about shield enchantment. If you add spikes to your shield, can you give the shield a separate enchantment for shield bonus and the spikes a weapon bonus so those two don´t interfere? Or do they add up somehow? If they do, how?

Thanks in advance for answering.

Those are standard heights and weights; they can vary as much as you wish. After all, in real life, humans range all over the place in height and weight, even if the rules narrow that range down.
