Hey james i was wondering on a planet the size of golarion at any one time how many mythic beings do you think there are..humaniod, monster, or otherwise..im not trying to get a exact number just a ball park number

thank you
for being you

Look at the number of mythic beings we presented as NPCs in the Worldwound over the course of Wrath of the Righteous. It's not a lot. And that's one of the most mythic areas in the Inner Sea region.

I'd probably say that the total number of mythic beings on Golarion is probably in the low hundreds, if that.

The actual answer is "As many as we need to tell the stories we eventually want to tell," though.

Hey, JJ:

I was just reading through my PDF of Council of Thieves, and there's an entire section on devils and possession in the 4th book.

One of the key things it has is that 'creatures whose bodies and souls are one cannot be possessed.'

Does that obviate your ruling with Magic Jar, above? Which is definitely a form of possession?

It also seems to obviate that entire 'Cannibal' fiction storyline about the Azatas who changed their flesh so they couldn't be possessed ...because they couldn't be possessed naturally, so why would they do it?

==Aelryinth

That's a single sentence in an early-to-the-system article we wrote many years ago. That kind of "rules creep" isn't good design. Again... if that's the way it worked, we SHOULD say so in the core rules or Bestiary, under the entry for the Outsiders, something like "Outsiders are immune to possession." We don't, and "hiding" those rules in articles doesn't help since it only creates confusion.

We almost redeveloped that article for Wrath of the Righteous; Adam wrote it, and he's been itching to rebuild and fix the article since he feels he can do a MUCH better job now than he did half a decade ago with it... but we didn't have the space or place for it. Had we rebuilt it, that sentence would have gone away entirely.

AKA: Ignore it. It's an error.

YOu know, I had the same thought reading the article...except for ghosts and spirits, who are all spirit, Outsiders are the only creatures whose body IS their spirits, so immunity to possession should just have been an Outsider characteristic...

And, of course, two books later is the chapter on Asmodeus with the infamous paladins who follow Asmodeus. Yeah. Totally see where you're coming from with the 'wish you could go back and change things'. I understand that was retconned out rather quickly.

FormerFiend wrote:

So, I'm sure you've been asked this a dozen times before, but it's been on my mind lately so I thought I'd get my own answer.

It's on the subject of the alignment restrictions for the paladin and antipaladin; why they're required to be lawful good and chaotic evil, respectively.

I get, though strongly disagree with, the flavor reasons for it, but from a purely mechanical, practical standpoint, I have to wonder why that chaotic good/lawful evil deities wouldn't want to have paladin/antipaladin analogues serving them.

Looking at the paladin/antipaladin purely as a skill set; someone who is trained in the use of heavy armor and martial weapons, has a good bab, all good saves, the ability to smite(thereby bypassing dr), lay on hands, and has various auras to affect the morale of enemies or allies, they're incredibly useful and are generally considered one of the more powerful classes. Why Cayden Cailean wouldn't want such warriors joining the fight for freedom, I've no idea. Why Asmodeus, who out of all the evil gods is far and away the most appropriate from a purely thematic stand point to have a dark/evil knight as a champion doesn't is utterly baffling.

But from that purely practical point, why don't gods of various alignments cultivate such warriors as servants? And for non-theistic individuals(as I recall, anti/paladins aren't required to have a deity), why wouldn't a lawful evil or chaotic good individual work to develop these extremely useful skills?

Because sometimes you can design things by NOT building things to be completely symmetrical. AKA: Because we chose not to create Chaotic Good/Lawful Evil "paladins." Those roles will be able to be filled by clerics, rangers, warpriests, inquisitors, and with a bit of roleplaying, ANY other class who chooses to follow a code.

Paladins are stronger the less versions there are of them, in other words.

They are not "champions of a deity," remember, but champions of an ideal. Of the lawful good ideal. They're not...

That in no way, shape, or form answers the question. The question isn't "Why did you as developers not include them". I know why you didn't, however much I disagree with it.

The question is why wouldn't a member of any other alignment besides chaotic evil and lawful good want to develop the skills that make an anti/paladin what it is; smite, lay on hands, aura, heavy armor/martial weapons, etc.

The question is from an in universe, in character standpoint, not a developmental one, how you justify people of different alignments not trying to develop those skills and abilities, given their obvious practical use?

Well then...

We didn't include them because we feel that it's a bad idea. Paladins are defined as much as by their uniqueness as they are by everything else. A paladin of every alignment dilutes the paladin and blurs the line between them and other classes too much. Furthermore, a paladin's abilities don't have 9 variants for 9 alignments.

I wrote a pair of articles for D&D's 3.5 edition back in Dragon #310 and #312 that presented paladins for the other 8 alignments. Coming up with themes and roles for those 8 was increasingly difficult, and in the end, while I did the best I could, my opinion was that the article was a bad idea.

In universe, in character... lawful good is arguably the HARDEST alignment to adhere to, and the fact that things have opposites mean that the polar opposite of lawful good can easilly have an opposite character.

I'm pretty sure that the warpriest in the upcoming Advanced Class Guide is going to be my preference for "I wanna play a holy warrior who's not a paladin but still has strong ties to a deity."

Give your NPCs more escape options. Not just things like teleportaiton, or even contingency, but also have them use the terrain and allies to enable an escape.

And you can always have the higher ups resurrect dead NPCs. You don't wanna do this TOO often. Twice a campaign is probably too much.

James, Mythic characters gain an ability called Hard to Kill that helps them when below past 0hp. Would you please recommend an appropriate replacement for this ability for races that are destroyed at 0 hp instead, like Undead or Constructs? Just letting them die like a normal creature just doesn't seem Mythic enough to me.

When you play an undead or construct as a player, you get a lot more advantages than disadvantages. One of those disadvantages is the fact that you don't get negative hit points.

Turns out that building an entire campaign based on rules you're not familiar with or aren't even done being written when you're trying to develop adventures that were themselves written even earlier, while still making sure that things come out playable in the end, is really really tough.

The paladin's name was Sasha Grigorovitch. She is a child of a vampiric nobleman named Mikhail Grigorovitch, whose patron is the demon lord Zura. After her brother, the antipaladin Ivan Grigorovitch murdered her love interest Tobias, she fled Mikhail's fortress of Duskhall and became a mercenary. Sometime after, she joined the Order of the Burning Sword, an order of paladins dedicated to Ragathiel.

I suppose I've overestimated how antagonistic the two city states are to each other. Doesn't have much to do with deity worship or lack thereof.

Okay, that makes sense. The idea I had wasn't really for a paladin coming out of Shoanti society anyway. More along the lines of a Shoanti half-blood bastard who was raised in Korvosa by his Shoanti parent, aware of his heritage and wanting to respect it, but while still being a paladin dedicated to his god and his/her code. I'm just trying to figure out how such a person would blend the two cultural practices in his mind and actions, gaining strength from a deity like Sarenrae and following her code while still believing his mom's aphorism "Every stone a totem." The only real thing that seems to link the two is maintaining your honor, whether that's keeping to your paladin code or honoring your quah's customs. Plus there's the bit in Faiths and Philosophies that states certain belief systems/philosophies are incompatible with others, like Totemism is incompatible with authoritarian religious sects, and Druidism is incompatible with Codes of Honor. Character psychology is HARD! :(

Had I known about it beforehand, I would have argued to remove it. I don't know why the design team felt it was a good addition to the game, because I think it's just needlessly limiting. Perhaps they felt a need to put it in there because they didn't want to contradict the minimum starting ages for all those classes... the more I think about it, the more I think that's the reason, in fact.

I'm aware you didn't write the rules. That's why I asked for your perspective as a player/GM, since I didn't want to sound like I was accusing you of making rules I didn't like or something. Sorry if it came across that way. What about the other rules, like the attribute penalties and stuff? What, in your opinion, are the most important things that are there to keep to differentiate a Young character from an adult? The addition of PC classes doesn't unbalance things mechanically, in your opinion?

Quote:
3b) The best way to stretch things out varies from game to game, frankly. But in most situations, in an AP, the time between volumes can be as long as you want it to be.

I suppose so. The book mentions that a character can technically graduate to adulthood early by reaching a certain level or just doing something sufficiently badass, and that's usually something a GM can swing by just finishing the first module of an AP, right?

Does a Scorpion whip have the same reach as a whip?

I would think it does since the only difference between a whip and a scorpion whip is a scorpion whip has metal blades attached to the end, but UE only lists as performance (which is illegal in PFS even though the whip itself isnt)

Thanks in advance :)

I think the attribute penalties are pretty spot on. The addition of PC classes doesn't unbalance a thing. I suspect part of the reason that young characters weren't part of the game before was that publishers were timid about the whole "putting children in danger" scene that seems to make RPG publishers nervous.

My take: The design team felt giving the scorpion whip its increased damage plus reach was unfair, so they took it away.

So you've said earlier in this thread that you've read Elfquest. Was WaRP's depiction of the elves, quite distinct from the traditional tolkien-style elves, an influence in any way on the development of Golarion elves?

Sczarni RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

In conversation with a friend of mine about a PDF full of archetyps I wrote recently being published, there was a bit of a disagreement. It was mostly about how one of the archetypes dealt with ranged weapon penalties in aquatic environments.

They ended up saying that I (though it probably could be inferred that could have meant all 3PP writers,) shouldn't write anything for areas of the rules that Paizo hasn't already addressed. Basically they were saying that I shouldn't have written anything related to ranged attacks underwater because Paizo hasn't written anything about them.

This raised a very interesting question.

Should anyone outside of Paizo address areas of the game that haven't been addressed by Paizo?

For example, currently there are no core feats, class abilities, spells, or magic items that address ranged attacks underwater and the penalties associated with them. Should 3PP wait for Paizo to do something with those rules before making feats, class abilities, or spells of their own that do?

I think he wants a wasp free beach and some tanning lotion, two things that Calistrian temples seem to be on short supply.

Thanks for answering my last batch of questions James...

You mention the Dragon Empires Gazeteer was the toughest product you worked on before Wrath of the Righteous. Can you explain in more detail why it was so difficult? Was it just the challenge of inventing an entire continents worth of nations in a short time?

Hi James,

A few questions about Golarion's afterlife/the Great Beyond.

1) How much does the average Commoner know about what happens to his soul after death?

2) How much does the average diabolist/demoniac know? Would they be privy to any or all of the information in the Books of the Damned?

It seems like like it'd be a poor choice to ally with the greater planar evils if you knew your ultimate fate in the lower planes. What good is all that power as a mortal if you know that your soul would wind up used for mortar in the walls of Dis or in the lunch pail of a daemon lord?

So you've said earlier in this thread that you've read Elfquest. Was WaRP's depiction of the elves, quite distinct from the traditional tolkien-style elves, an influence in any way on the development of Golarion elves?

Have you read the new Elfquest comics that have recently been released? If so, what do you think?

How cute would a half-elf baby magically produced from Merisiel and Kyra be?

What's your favorite generic weapon in Pathfinder, from a flavor standpoint, and from a "my characters seem very effective when using this" standpoint?

Yes, in that it was an influence on my own homebrew elves, as well as on some aspects of how Desna ended up who she was.

Very cute!

Starknife, cause it's from my homebrew setting, from a flavor standpoint. Rapier from a "very effective" standpoint.

Probably. Golarion isn't nearly as hung up about nudity as America is.
