His swarm breath only creates the aura of locusts around him and only does what that ability says. If he wants to create a swarm that attacks, he uses swarm master to direct existing swarms or just uses a wish to conjure/create one.

Thank you very much, James.

I really like your design on those Demon Lords, they are awesome!

Another quicken question, do you guys at Paizo have any recent plan of statting up some other demigod level planar lords? I would be thralled to see some Archdevils statted up following the line of what you did to the Demon Lords.

I've been going through old Superstar threads in preparation for this year, and I came across the 2011 Meet the Judges page and I just have to ask: What was your reaction to your "underlings" writing your biography for you? :)

1) How would you describe your sense of humor?

2) Do you think that there is any subject that should never be joked about no matter what? Or is everything fair game in at least some contexts?

The best place to go would be back to Pathfinder #10, which is not only an entire adventure set in the Cinderlands with the Shoanti, but has a "Shoanti Way of Life" article in it. There's some other tidbits about the Shoanti in the other volumes of Curse of the Crimson Throne, as well as some in the Magnimar and Korvosa city books, along with Robin Laws' novel "Blood of the City."

There was never an article or significant Shoanti element in Rise of the Runelords apart from there being some Shoanti NPCs.

There's also some Shoanti information in Varisia - Birthplace of Legends.

Out of curiosity, if a small population of rust monsters found itself in an area with very little iron, could they evolve so as to be able to eat other metals that oxidize easily? Would this affect their coloration? I'm asking because I'm thinking of the gorgeous pigments that the various copper oxides produce - malachite, azurite, turquoise and chrysocolla. At the very least, they'd be lovely monsters.

On Ahriman...

1) How do you pronounce "Usij"? Oo-siege?

2) What would motivate someone to worship Ahriman anyway? Would you have to be insane or something?

3) Ahriman is CR 26. Akhans are CR 20. Couldn't a bunch of them gang up on him and take his position? Eh tu, Akhan?

4) I know that Ahriman, the Divs, and the Usij are taken from the ancient Persian faith Zoroastrianism. What sources were used to research and adapt them to PF?

5) Ahura Mazda, the main god-figure in Zoroastrianism, isn't in PF but Ahriman is. if he was, what domains and favored weapon would he have?

Hello James!

Not sure whether to post these questions here or in the Midnight Isles thread... please have them moved if you think it necessary.

- Shamira: Besides the few glimpses of information we got in The Midnight Isles... is there any chance we will get more elaboration on this Nascent Demon Lady any time soon?

- Nocticula: Not too long ago, I asked how Nocticula and Calistria get along, if at all. You replied 'Better than you might think'.

Given Nocti's vulnerability to Law, her actions towards the heroes in WotR, and that... interesting heretical cult; might this 'better than you might think' be referring towards the same complex of topics?

Hey James!

Generally, paladins codes will vary a bit depending on what god the paladin worships. What kind of paladin code do you think a paladin of Apsu would follow? (I am running a paladin/silver dragon disciple in Wrath of the Righteous)

Sorry, I know Paladins aren't your favorate class in the game, but I figured you would know if there was anything that would be especially important to Apsu aside from protecting/slaying the appropriate colors of dragons.

Edit: Also, what do you think Apsu's general interest in the worldwound conflict would be? Would it involve anything aside from wanting to help because he is a Lawful Good deity, and that dragons are being killed by the demons as well? Perhaps he's worried that if the demons succeed that Golarion would no longer be a suitable place for the conflict with Dahak?

Because Lovecraft is serious business, for one. I'm not a fan of mixing whimsy with his creations.

And because as a general rule I find Christmas songs as a genre to be unpleasant to listen to; I just don't like the melodies.

And because it's jokey in a way my sense of humor does not align with.

2) Yes, although humor can be an excellent method of coping with something so mind-blowingly horrific as, for example, 9/11. As long as the humor doesn't hit too soon. Some things aren't ever funny. I'd say rape jokes, for example, are never funny.

Rust monsters already eat rust made from any metal; note that their rust attack affects any metal, not just iron. (This is mostly because we're not interested in listing whether or not any metal we invent in the game rusts or not, frankly.)

3) Perhaps. Although it's worth remembering that Ahriman is unlikely to be encountered on his own and has a lot of resources and options at his disposal in the House of Oblivion and elsewhere. But an usurping of Ahriman is possible—if that's the story you want to tell.

4) That's a question for Adam Daigle.

5) Also a question for Adam. I've had actually very little design work on the divs or associated creatures, and don't know enough about Ahura Mazda to say.

I wouldn't really want Apsu to have a paladin code, frankly. Paladins, to me, feel very much like humanoid constructions, and Apsu is a dragon god. I don't really like the idea of dragon paladins, and dragons don't really mesh all that well with the class system due to the unuusual way they advance.

James,

Does each Iconic have a canon mythic path, or are some of them (the more martial ones especially) flexible?

Do you think a quest to send Agmazar the Star Titan to Eox (as originally intended) would be an interesting thing to base an adventure on?

Do you know if the Outer Dragons' described tendence to have their alignment vary more than most other kinds of dragons is mostly about good vs evil (All but the Void Dragon are neutral on that axis) or do they vary between law and chaos and neutrality as well (all but the void dragon and time dragon are described as either chaotic or neutral).

It's up to you what happens to it. It doesn't play a role in the AP though. It would certainly make an awesome trophy.

Also, it wasn't really spelled out clearly in Midnight Isles... but Nocticula actually KILLS Baphomet when she stops him at the end of "Midnight Isles," which means he is resurrected in his Abyssal Realm but gets really timid about further risks... which is why the PCs are able to invade his realm in the next adventure without him immediately trying to stop them.

Spoiler:
Does that kill/resurrection count against his 1/year resurrection ability that all Demon lords have or is it just if they getkilled on there own plane?

You: A PC who wants to go rescue each and every one of them has over a century of victims to seek out and save. That's a pretty overwhelming order, and it's WELL beyond the scope of a single adventure path.

Oh. Okay.

You: It's worth noting, though, that only a very small percentage of those who died during and after the opening of the Worldwound were transformed into fiends—that type of thing is pretty rare, in fact. The vast majority of those who died went on to whatevever the afterlife had in store for them anyway.

That's reassuring. :) Now for questions.

1. What sort of adventure path would feature empyreal lords, and do you have any plans for them in the near future?

2. Would you consider shapechange a good standard spell-like ability for empyreal lords to have, along with polymorph any object as a realm ability? Why or why not?

3. Are there any demigods with a higher Cha than Nocticula or is hers a general upper limit?

4. What powers would Arshea have that are similar to Nocticula's?

5. For questions with answers too racy for the forums (e.g., "What consensual kinks does Arshea consider taboo?"), may I ask you via private message?

6. Suppose a monster has a spell-like ability that takes 10 minutes or more to cast as a spell (hallow, planar ally, most symbols, etc). Would it also take 10 minutes as a SLA? Its description says "using all other spell-like abilities is a standard action unless noted otherwise" but that still isn't clear.

7. Suppose nobody in a party has Disable Device. Besides knock, how will they deal with traps and locks?

8. What advice do you have for playing an adventure path if you've already read it?

9. I've been thinking about creating a whole party of PCs who worship Arshea. How do I keep them from being samey?

10. The PCs are given the empty shell of a building as a reward. What are the benefits in terms of downtime rules?

Makes sense. In that case I think I'll just have the character trying to emulate the behavior of a silver dragon as his personal 'paladin code' since they behave pretty similarly to paladins in general.

We've had a discussion IMC about the use of uncanny dodge in relation to various ways of losing your dexterity bonus to armor class, exemplified by climbing and balancing.

Uncanny dodge wrote:
Starting at 4th level, a rogue can react to danger before her senses would normally allow her to do so. She cannot be caught flat-footed, nor does she lose her Dex bonus to AC if the attacker is invisible. She still loses her Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized. A rogue with this ability can still lose her Dexterity bonus to AC if an opponent successfully uses the feint action (see Combat) against her.
Climb wrote:
While climbing, you can’t move to avoid a blow, so you lose your Dexterity bonus to AC (if any).
Acrobatics on balancing wrote:
While you are using Acrobatics in this way, you are considered flat-footed and lose your Dexterity bonus to your AC (if any).

The question is, does uncanny dodge let you retain your Dexterity bonus to AC while climbing. Balancing is quite clear, as you become explicitly flat-footed, and this is exactly what uncanny dodge helps against. Climb is less clear. On one hand, it does not explicitly say you are flat-footed. On the other hand, separating flat-footedness from having no Dexterity to AC might be over-thinking, and the the two might mean exactly the same, being just a variation of language. Also, uncanny dodge explicitly cites "She still loses her Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized. A rogue with this ability can still lose her Dexterity bonus to AC if an opponent successfully uses the feint action (see Combat) against her." - both cases of losing Dex bonus while not being flat-footed. This could mean that these are the only two examples of this applying and that uncanny dodge helps against all other cases of losing your Dexterity bonus to AC.

I am leaning towards the later interpretation - that flat-footed and losing dexterity bonus to AC is one and the same, and that uncanny dodge helps against both unless explicitly stated otherwise.

James, are there plans to reprint the parts of Kingmaker that are out of print? It seems wickedly hard to find copies.

In movies or other media, when someone dies and they don't show the body or it isn't found, do you typically assume it's because they're not dead or because our imagination can be more vivid than any death they could describe?

Does your assumption change depending on Villian vs Main character? Genre?

The Mass Effect guys are teasing that certain parts of their next game is available for them to play through, do you have any specific hopes for what they do with the game and/or series?

What about for DA Inquisition?

I know I shouldn't keep asking you rules questions here, but you're the most reliable source of quick answers.

In the case of the Armored Coat (which is a Leather coat with Metal inserts) which special materials do you apply? Leather materials or metal materials...

or both?

Query on godhood for your perusal:

Can you have more than one god with the same "portfolio" at once for a particular region? Some settings don't allow it (e.g. FR). So if, for example, a new quasi-god (Divine Source, demigod, whatever) were to rise up and wish to take on "Magic" as a portfolio, would they have to conflict with Nethys over it?

I know that there are examples of full gods and demigods holding the same portfolio (e.g. Calistria, a full goddess, has lust, and so does Nocticula, who's only a demigod; so in theory you could have a quasi-god with lust as well, yes?), but is this also permitted on the full-deity scale? There was originally the Azlanti deity Amaznen, but he's obviously no longer around.

Or are regional elements enforced? So, for example, Nethys can be the god of magic in the Inner Sea region, but not necessarily for the entire universe.

Or are two gods in the same region with the same portfolio ("Magic") permitted, as long as one's interpretation of that portfolio is distinct from the other?

How would you handle a player wanting to purchase a Sun Orchid Elixir at the Thuvian auction? I have some trouble judging how much money well-off nobles would have access to, so I'm not really sure what a good threshold is for being in the top 6 bids... does 50,000gp sound about right?

James,
If a sorcerer attempts to use a scroll created by a wizard, assuming that the spell appears on both lists and the sorcerer is of the appropriate level does the sorcerer have to make a UMD check in order to "Emulate Ability Score" if his intelligence is not 10 + spell lvl? Or does a sorcerer use his charisma in this situation.

The relevant text from the skill description is:
Use a Scroll: Normally, to cast a spell from a scroll, you must have the scroll's spell on your class spell list. Use Magic Device allows you to use a scroll as if you had a particular spell on your class spell list. The DC is equal to 20 + the caster level of the spell you are trying to cast from the scroll. In addition, casting a spell from a scroll requires a minimum score (10 + spell level) in the appropriate ability. If you don't have a sufficient score in that ability, you must emulate the ability score with a separate Use Magic Device check.

I had a dream last night where I was a member of a group on a fantasy world that had just recently discovered the existence of the planes, had been studying them for a bit, and was planning on making expeditions to try and establish colonies on other planes, but when we were scouting for good places to establish extraplanar colonies, we found the ruins of an ancient civilization we knew was from our own home plane, with a surviving ghost from that civilization's own attempts to establish a colony, as well as lots of lost lore...and my memory's a bit hazy but I think the lapsed into barbarianism descendants of that colony, who had been altered by the plane. So when I woke up, I couldn't help but wonder...

1) Given that Azlant tried to terraform the moon, would they have ever attempted to establish colonies on other planes, in your opinion?

2) If so, which planes do you think would be the most likely candidates?

3) Do you think that a could form on another plane? I think from what I recall that the ethereal plane overlaps the material plane and the plane of shadow, so if it was one of the elemental or outer planes, would a ghost even be able to manifest in the first place? And if it could, do you think having formed on or dwelling on another plane for extended periods of time would be likely to alter it?

Do you ever plan on adding mecha-like things to Pathfinder? Maybe in Numeria?
