Hey James! I love your involvement with the community. Question for you:
Rangers don't get an animal companion till 4th level, and as you pointed out the selection was slimmer as well because Jason didn't feel Rangers needed a bad-ass companion. However with the introduction of the Mad Dog archetype, we now have a powerhouse Barbarian having a full druid list of animals to choose from and they get their companion at level 1.
1) Is there any ideas currently of creating a ranger archetype with a featured companion at level 1?
2) Do you have any input on class features that could be switched or removed to make having an animal companion at first level viable for a ranger? Currently there is the "Falconer" archetype, which restricts choices to only bird companions, and the companion is much weaker until the ranger hits 4th level.
Ideas that come to mind are reduced Favored Enemy bonuses (halved), pushing back the ability to cast spells till later (or reducing the number of spells per day). Alternatively, what about a Combat Style that focuses on an Animal Companion?
Thanks!
Dude, Spell-Less Ranger has that feature in one of his archetypes!!

James,
I have a cleric of Iomedae looking at adding one of the 1d6 energy damage enchantments to his longsword. Does Iomedae favor (or dis-favor) any particular energy type? If my cleric worshipped Sarenrae I'd obviously go with flaming on a scimitar; does Iomedae have any such energy preferences?
Thanks!
P.S. While you're at it, what about other deities? Do any of them (that aren't glaringly obvious, like Sarenrae) prefer one energy type on their weapons over another?

Nope. When you're possessed, your spirit does not become a seperate entity/new monster.

This question is not mine, but one found unanswered on another forum. I'm hoping you can answer it, James.
"A small Cavalier can take a wolf mount at level one. A wolf has 13 hp (2d8+4), AC 14, and a 1d6 bite attack.
If you're at 4th level, you can get a dog mount. A dog has 6 hp (1d8+2), AC 13, and a 1d4 bite attack.
....How does that make sense!? You get access to an (objectively) less powerful mount at a higher level?"
My guess? Is it because the dog starts out small sized, then is medium at 4th level? If so, you guys might want to spell this out to people a little better.
My guess is that it's a good question for the rules forum and a FAQ.

Questions about the Magus:
In the last session, I used my Hexcrafter Magus in this way:
a) Cast chill touch, try to hit.
b) Then casting Frostbite, trying to hit.
c) Then casting Frigid Touch, trying to hit. Now, a couple of question arised:
1) What if I miss with Chill Touch and/or Frostbite? Te spell text says I get one touch per caster level, so, if I miss, do I waste a touch? Or I effectively use them only when I hit?
2) As per Chill Touch description, once I have Chill Touch+Frostbite touches remained, if I cast and discharge Frigid Touch through my simitar, I should deal (1d6+ by Str scimitar)+(1d6 + possibily 1 Str damage by Chill Touch)+(1d6+CL nonlethal + fatigued by Frostbite)+(4d6 + staggered by Frigid Touch). Is that correct?
The main question is only if I miss an attack with forstbite/chill touch, what happen? Do I waste one touch or do I retain until hit?
1) If you miss , you waste the touch attack. It's not like holding a charge.
2) Dunno. That's confusing. I'd bring that over to the rules forum if I were you.

A couple of questions on the Runelords (I seem to have a definite pattern with the topics I'm most interested in...):
1) Throughout the history of Thassilon, how often were Runelords actually brought under the forcible sway of other Runelords using magic? Not just things like Sorshen allying with and then betraying them, but actual effects like the Crown of the Iron King (Ultimate Equipment), Dominate, simulacrums loyal to the one doing the controlling, and so on and so forth.
2) If this took place, did it ever happen to Xanderghul and/or Sorshen?
3) The Swords of Sin. Which Runelord first had the idea to make them? Or did they all sort of collectively come to the conclusion that they wanted/needed champions who would have special weapons? (Xanderghul at least intended to - at first - personally wield Baraket, based on Artifacts and Legends.)
4) Which of them decided on swords? Runelords obviously don't customarily wield swords as their "signature" weapons.
5) Following on from the previous questions, which was the first sword actually made? (Which Runelord was first and which sword was first may, after all, not be the same thing.)
6) Were the Swords of Sin a relatively late invention of Thassilon, or closer to the beginning? Or did they spring up separately throughout the history of Thassilon in ones and twos?
7) At any point, did the chosen champions of the Swords try to go against the Runelord when said Runelord succeeded a previous Runelord who had appointed the champion?
8) The description for the Swords of Sin says that without the Runelord awake/active, they only have the powers of a +2 weapon with the noted special abilities from the Core book. Does this also include, for example, the +5 to Bluff checks of Baraket or the immunity to Enchantment effects of Asheia, or is it solely the attributes like Flaming, Spell-Storing, Speed and so on?
1) This is unrevealed... but it didn't happen all that often and when it did, it didn't last long.
2) Nope; those two never had that happen.
3) We talk a little more about these in Shattered Star and in Artifacts & Legends, and might even have said who did them first. I can't recall off the top of my head.
4) Again, see #3. They likely chose swords because, like in modern Golarion, they're among the most widespread and well-known weapons. As for choosing something they don't use themselves... since it was for someone else all along, why not?
5) See #3 above.
6) They were pretty early.
7) Perhaps, but doubtful.
8) It's ONLY the attributes like flaming and so on.

1) Personal preference.
2) Yes.
3) Me.
4) Like human blood.
5) Paizo is taking the whole company to see it tomorrow afternoon as a thanks to everyone for working so hard over the Gen Con crunch, so, yup!
6) Depends on the region and how they presented themselves. They'd certainly be an object of curiosity and suspicion.

Unless a deity's obvious about it, they don't have a preference. Iomedae's favorite weapon enhancements are probably banes versus undead and evil outsiders though.

The main question is only if I miss an attack with forstbite/chill touch, what happen? Do I waste one touch or do I retain until hit?
I play a Hexcrafter Magus as well in one of my campaigns. If you're not really familiar with the rules, especially for magic, they can be quite confusing. Hopefully I can clear up some errors.
When you cast a spell and miss with a touch attack, you still have that spell readied in your hand. You have one minute to touch/hit someone with it so it goes off. Now, if you cast another spell, the first spell is immediately gone and replaced with the new spell. You can not use Spellstrike to deliver more than one spell per round as that is impossible given the rules for magic (without something like a quicken magic or the like).
For example, if you cast Chill Touch, you get a free attack to deliver the spell (through touch or your weapon as a Magus). If you miss, you still hold the charge. If you cast a spell next round, Chill Touch immediately ends and your new spell takes effect. In order to take advantage of Chill Touch (1 touch/level right?) you have to make all those attacks before casting another spell. Since Spell Combat can't be used with Haste, Chill Touch is a useful spell to have on hand if you get the benefits of Haste.
Does that make sense? If you want to play a Magus correctly, please read this post by Grick: http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2nler?A-Guide-to-Touch-Spells-Spellstrike-and-S pell

What type of classes would be typical to see in service of the (False) Living God?
Sorcerers and Wizards are the obvious two. Fighters, Rangers, Rogues would be easy to include. Alchemists, Barbarians, Cavaliers I can all picture as well.
Witches not so much. Monks perhaps?
Clerics and Paladins are the obvious exclusions.
But what about Oracles and Inquisitors?
Is it possible that an individual could believe in the idea of Razmir, the Living God, so much that they begin to manifest oracular powers? Also, while Inquisitors certainly have Divine connections, would it be possible to so fervently believe in the Living God that it would some how power Inquisitions?

Dear Mr. Jacobs:
1) This is a question coming from a development direction. Do you find it difficult to tell your fans "no" sometimes? I'll try to explain what I mean:
I've seen many people over the years clamoring for a dragonborn-style race of partial dragons as a player race. Paizo as a whole has shied away from that idea, and instead have given Kobolds the dragon-like feats and abilities. Another example would be non-evil undead (though the Juju Oracle snuck by).
So, do you ever feel like the pressure from fans of your work causes you difficulty in writing what you really want? Do you feel like we, as fans, contribute a lot to Golarion through our requests and demands of you, or do you have Golarion pretty fleshed out in your mind, and what the fans want takes a distinct backseat to that?
2) Have you gotten to play Munchkin Pathfinder yet, and if so can you tell me what the other two classes are? All we know so far are Witch and Alchemist, and it's KILLING me not knowing!
Thanks in advance for your replies, and just so you know, this is my favorite thread to read through when I'm not replying to questions about my guides or things like that!

Hmmmm...
Nothing immediately comes to mind. A better place to go for examples would be movies—characters like whats-his-name from Princess Bride, Arya Stark, Zorro, Tim Roth's character from Rob Roy, and various pirates from various pirate movies all do the job.

Bards are huge, because they are the best at pretending to be clerics. He has some inquisitors, but not a lot of oracles. And while an oracle could worship Razmir, that isn't enough to grant them their oracle powers—those come from other things.

1) I don't find it difficult to say no at all, especially if I know or feel that it's for the best of the game/campaign setting/adventure/product. I don't really feel pressure from fans in this regard, frankly, but I do from fellow game designers at some times. My philosophy is to design Golarion and it's line of products as best I can while being true to Golarion's vision, and that what we DO put in there will be enough to please fans.
2) I haven't played it yet. And it's not my place to spoil things for that game; sorry!

Before I get back to my incessant questioning, I'd like to thank you for indulging my obsessions. You've made this forum fun. :)
Now, back to my questions.
1. When using fabricate to create a large structure (ship, temple, etc.), can I use the Engineer skill?
2. For greater teleport, what counts as a "reliable description?"
3. Does mind blank foil commune and contact other plane?
4. Why's Damiel a worshiper of Norgorber? Aren't their alignments too far apart?
5. And that reminds me, what sort of theme was Paizo going for when they designed the alchemist base class? I'm getting an overly gothic vibe.
6. How exactly do spells like dream and nightmare tie into alchemy?
7. In Chronicles of the Righteous, are there any Empyreals themed around alchemy, invention, or transformation?
8. Since Andoran's based on early America, does it have an equivalent of the Masons?
9. Why would a woman aware of Hell's misogyny (such as Abrogail II) willingly serve it?
10. How can I play Pathfinder without a battle grid?

1) If you mean "Knowledge (engineering)," then only if your GM says it's okay. I would instead require Craft (carpentry) or Craft (shipmaking) or the like.
2) GM's interpretation. I would say having been there counts, as would having someone describe the locaiton in great detail. But in the end, it's basically code for "you can teleport here if the GM says yes."
3) Huh? Why would it? Commune doesn't target a creature with mind blank, so you can still use it or contact other plane to learn about a creature with mind blank. Mind blank only protects against spells that directly attempt to interact with the target.
4) Not for an alchemist. Although that does bear looking in to anyway...
5) I did the initial design on the class; I was going for a gothic and slightly steampunk gritty feel. If you've played the Witcher games, you know the inspiration.
6) Think of them as extracts you drink and then they put you to sleep so you can send your mind out to influence dreams.
7) I'm not sure; I wasn't really involved in that book and haven't had a chance to look at it, but I'm sure there are.
8) Nope. There's some equivalents, sort of, up in Ustalav though.
9) Abrogail II doesn't serve hell; she uses it as a tool and a blueprint for Thrune.
10) With tape measures or marked strings to measure distances on a gridless battle mat? Or if you don't want to use a battle mat at all... you can try to simply describe things, but the game's really not built for that kind of play.

Will the Mythic Adventures book have rules for how Leadership and cohorts interact with Mythic PCs? For example, if a Mythic PC has a few Mythic tiers and is thus going up against extraordinarily powerful opponents that would normally be well beyond their abilities, cohorts (which tend to be much weaker than the PC they're cohort to) will probably have an even harder time of it than the PC would if the latter wasn't Mythic.
So will there be an option for the cohorts to become strong enough to keep pace with the normal level difference they'd be under?
Will cohorts be able to become mythic at all?
And if any of this will be the case, will it be for any path, or primarily just the Marshal?

I believe that Leadership is mentioned... but it's a bigger topic for Ultimate Campaign. Whether or not a cohort can become mythic will be left entirely to the GM and circumstances, I think.
Exact details on how Leadership works for mythic characters isn't something I can talk about yet.

The party in my campaign has moved into a wing of an inn as their HQ, and the halfling wants to buy appropriately-sized furnishings to replace the bed, desk, chair, etc., in his room. Ultimate Equipment doesn't have prices for furniture (unless I'm missing it somewhere) and Ultimate Campaign includes furniture in the price for building a room. About how much would you say basic furnishings like a bedstead, table, and chair cost to purchase or have made?
