Have you tried Days Gone?

I realize the zombie apocalypse genre is quite overdone, however I highly highly recommend it, it's been one of my favorite games, not as beautiful as Ghost of Tsushima but just as much fun to play.

At any rate, I hope you're having a good and safe week so far.

I haven't, and I'm not sure I will. There's plenty of games out there, and one can't play them all. Days Gone's reviews weren't enough to convince me to not play other games I'd been anticipating more. Also, I tend to prefer games these days that either allow you to custom build a character or have a woman or person of color or anyone other than a beefy white guy as the protagonist. (I made an exception for Death Stranding because Norman Reedus, of course.)

Do you consider Norman Reedus a "beefy" white guy? I thought he'd be an exception because he's more wiry and rugged, and doesn't have the typical action hero weightlifter physique.

As a follow up to the question, do you have a list of go-to adjectives when describing a character based on their ability scores? such as:
Beefy - high strength
Rugged - high constitution
etc.

I don't consider him a beefy white guy, no, but he's certainly a white guy, and there's PLENTY of those in protagonist roles out there in video games.

I don't have a go-to list of adjectives to describe a character based on their abilitiy scores. I just use those ability scores as the adjectives. Strength = strong, Dexterity = dextrous, Intelligence = intelligent, Wisdom = wise, and Charisma = charismatic. Constitution's the only weird one here, so I use "healthy" for that one.

I recently purchased Sandpoint, Light of the Lost Coast, which may be my favourite RPG book I've ever read. I'm curious, what would you speculate is behind the complex door deep in the Pit that can only be unlocked by the clockwork songbird?

Yay; glad you enjoyed Sandpoint! As for what's behind the door in the Pit... I know what I put there in the office campaign I ran for the folks here and that took place (among other places) throughout the Pit itself, but I'm not quite yet 100% resigned to the idea that this adventure will never see the light of day... it still has a chance to see print, so I don't really want to spoil it at this point.

I intentionally left it vague in the book, as a result, both to preserve spoilers for a potential published adventure, but also to encourage GMs to get creative. What should be behind the door though should be either the goal of an entire adventure, or an entrance to a brand new location of your own design. It's a chance to personalize the Pit to your game, and to reward PCs who open the door with a custom built by their GM treasure or opportunity.

If you DO put something there, it should be something noteworthy and significant. If not an artifact that you want to play a role in your game, then at the very least a collection of treasures for your PCs that's greater than any other treasure stash they've recovered so far. It should be memorable, like finding a dragon's hoard or digging up a hidden pirate treasure that the group's been tracking for multiple sessions.

Thanks! On the same topic, if someone who's never played Rise of the Runelords wants to run a homebrew campaign in Sandpoint for players new to the Pathfinder setting, would you recommend setting the game after the events of Rise (as the book does) or before?

Also, are there any other must-have sources for someone running a game set around Sandpoint and the Lost Coast? Right now I'm working off of Sandpoint, Light of the Lost Coast, the Beginner Box, and the first two volumes of the comics.

As someone who has recently run the Runelords campaigns, I'd suggest personally setting it after them. Maybe even after Return, tbh. Having a history of the heroes from Sandpoint, Magnimar, Riddleport, and Roderick's Cove all as local celebrities adds some potential fun role-play opportunities, especially if your group wants to play those later as sort of prequel campaigns!

Reading up on Korvosa also would be useful as it's the other major city in the area and has strong connections to one of the Runelords, and features heavily in the Crimson Throne AP.

It's easiest to set the game after the events since a not-insignificant part of Rise of the Runelords was intended as an introduction to Golarion, and in that introduction, revealing the existence of Thassilon to players AND characters. Today, the events of Runelords are so well known that many players assume that Thassilon and all that has been common knowledge for ages, but in fact, it wasn't in Rise of the Runelords—it was that adventure (and the implication being, the characters who finished that adventure) who returned that knowledge to the world.

So it's easiest to set a non-Rise of the Runelords campaign in Sandpoint POST adventure path.

The Sandpoint book is the primary resource for a game like this. Rise of the Runelords has more encoutners set in and around Sandpoint (particulalry parts 1, 2, 4, and 5), and you can mine those Sandpoint encounters and repurpose them for your game pretty easilly. Jade Regeon #1, "The Brinewall Legacy," also has some Sandpoint region stuff, particularly if your group wants to go to Brinestump Marsh. And part 2 of Return of the Runelords has one encounter set in Sandpoint.

That all said, you really only need the Sandpoint book to do all this stuff. It incorporates and expands on all of the lore that got into the comic books, for certain.

Please let me answer the questions here. I'm pretty diligent about replying within 24 hours when folks post here.

In any event, Korvosa/Curse of the Crimson Throne is information overload for someone who wants to set a game in Sandpoint.

The only lore included in the comics it doesn't seem to expand on is the Mistmother (Issandra's patron). Any hints?

That's something I cut/revised/fixed. Her patron in 1st edition is "strength". This is not her superior. Her superior is Lamashtu.

(I grew more frustrated as 1st edition went along with how witch patrons were presented as topics but treated as creatures.)

Wasn't Mistmother expanded in comic article for Issandra's superior/boss in the Lamashtan church? (with implication that its cl 20th "entity" so possibly not just a cleric) Or maybe I just remember wrong

Maybe, can't remember since that was many years ago, but the point is that I cut her from the region in the actual Sandpoint book because I decided it was lame to have a cool regional high-level villain who was a minion of someone else. Feel free to add in the Mistmother and do whatever you want with her in your game, but she's not part of the Sandpoint canonical lore in the actually published by Paizo official continuity.

Color out of Space is my favorite ever from the festival; it was back in the 2019 one. There were some fun shorts in the 2020 one but I don't remember their titles. None of the features in 2020 were outstanding... a few were fine and a few were bad.

What are the proper demonyms for acolytes of the Elemental Lords?

If there's anywhere out there you could direct me to that actually lists demonyms for Pathfinder faiths/nationalities (like how Wikipedia includes demonyms in its articles about real-world countries), that would work too. The Pathfinder sites I know of do not.

We haven't really invented those yet, as far as I know. The closest thing to a "list of demonyms" is, I believe, in our in-house style guide, which isn't for the public. Sorry!

That's probably a tie between Karzoug (since he was the first and had the largest role in my homebrew) and Sorshen (since she's the one who has the most interesting story arc).

I'll be buying both. At this point, I'm more excited for the PlayStation and the remaster of Demon Souls than for the Xbox, since I just use my PC for those kind of games these days pretty much. Not sure WHEN I'll be buying both. I'm not really in much of a rush though.

Yup; happens a lot, and in fact this is the kind of game I prefer to run—a sandbox where I give the PCs a place to explore and have a basic idea for the plot but am ready and eager to pivot as they get excited by things.

Homebrew Karzoug was a necromancer who used a powerful scythe artifact ("Karzoug's Reaping Scythe"). He was a lich, and had an alliance with a powerful death knight. He was, in effect, my homebrew's version of Vecna, or Fistandauntilus, or Sauron, or Tar-Baphon, etc.

I'll likely be getting Elden Ring for the PC.

Rysky wrote:

Because my PC can run games better at a higher level of quality than a PS4 or an Xbox One. If Elden Ring comes out for the newest generation of consoles, then I'll base my choice on which platform seems to work the best for it after reading reviews and the like.

That's detailed in the "Hell's Vengeance" Adventure Path... I think maybe in book 4, but I'm not sure since Rob developed and outlined that one.

How long was the Hao Jin Tapestry in existence, and how long did it take from its beginning until the last piece from Golarion was transferred there? Even a rough number in decades or hundreds of years would be useful.

I haven't been able to find any timeline between her birth and when she abandoned the material plane around 350 years later.

I'm making an Elf character that is from the Tapestry, and trying to find out if they could have been born on Golarion, or would they have to have been born in the tapestry, if their age was around 400.

I don't know. Have you checked "Pathfinder Legends"? She's got some info there. Otherwise, we might not have much more to say about it until we get to next Spring with Fists of the Ruby Phoenix.

One option in the meantime if you're not comfortable setting that date for your game's canon and disregarding whatever we might or might not say, I suppose, is to have your elf simply not know how old they are.

Not really; I never got beyond the dabbling stage in minis painting. I guess the main tip would be to don't spend too much money on minis that need to be painted until you confirm to yourself that you enjoy painting them.

Nope. Aroden could be a jerk at times, but the Ashen Man is a full-on actual villain. He's actively seeking to enjoy the end of multiple worlds.

He's not Aroden.

Chelaxian is a noun to indicate a person from Cheliax. Chelish is an adjective that modifies any noun to indicate that thing is from Cheliax. Or maybe it's the other way around. We dropped "Chelaxian" from 2nd edition because of the confusion. At least, that's my understanding from over here in the Kingmaker mines.

On the topic of Starfinder, do you think Starfinder has the underlying theme of "the death of magic and its replacement by technology"?

Because at times, there seems to be little that the Technomancer and Mystic, etc. can do that couldn't be more easily done by the super-tech we have in SF.

I know there's a one-off line in the Tech section about how "most tech except for the simplest items incorporates magic," but as long as it's not elaborated on, I can't really get a feel for it.

I pretty much see it as the old Clarke saying—if the technology is significantly advanced from what you can comprehend, it'll look like magic. I'm pretty sure that if 10-year-old me back in 1982 was shown an iphone that you touch the glass of to watch a movie would have thought it was magic.
