In PF#125 and #126, the plizeazoth and sea linnorm's alignment is both NE. Is it intended that they do not share the alignment of the rest of their race, or is this an error?

Linnorms are generally evil, but there's nothing that requires them to be chaotic, lawful, or neutral. Most are chaotic, but some are not. Not an error.

Same goes for the plizeazoth; most algholthus are lawful evil, but that's not an intrinsic requirement of their kind, other than that they're all at least some brand of evil. Not an error.

Which do you think is bigger, Mister Jacobs, a Sea Linnorm or Ragadan?

No contest. Ragadan.

Do you have a favourite Linnorm?

Are you attending GenCon This year? If so, what events are you attending?

ALSO, if you are attending I hope it is a low stress as possible!

Are you planning on playing the Pathfinder: Kingmaker video game produced by Owlcat? (assuming you aren't already).

How involved are you in the project from an approval standpoint? Is it mostly just broad strokes, or do you have to approve every line of dialogue?

I absolutely am planning on playing it.

I'm in a broad strokes high-tier level of approval for the game, and have been involved in that capacity from the very start of the project a few years ago.

I'm not personally doing an approval of all of the text in the game, but Mark Moreland is, and it's a big task... the amount of text in there is close to about a year's worth of campaign setting books, so it's a HUGE job to do.

Do they have you doing anything in the office while everyone else is in Indy? (I know in my office if you don't go to the annual conference you get to deluged with work trying to cover for the other 12+ that aren't there).

Apart from developing the last adventure of Return of the Runelords (which has a development deadline of the 10th of August) and simultaneously outlining the first 2nd edition Adventure Path, I'll be here to handle any emergencies that normally would be handled by a designer or developer.

We know that Gen Con's coming every year and build our work schedules to compensate for that, so I don't get deluged with others' responsibilities because they have a week-long gap built in.

With regard to the 2nd edition AP, will it feature any demons?

Not sure where we said that Azlanti have no facial hair, but if we did, I'd say that should be adjusted to something like, "Azlanti men were often clean-shaven." We've said that ELVES have no facial hair, and that it's rare for half-elves.

There's nothing genetic in their code that says "no facial hair" though.

Page 16 of Inner Sea Races said that beards or chest hair were generally considered signs of mixed heritage. Thus I thought that pureblooded Azlanti have no facial or chest hair genetically. But you said otherwise. I'm not sure. Maybe the book was wrong?

The Playtest Bestiary will reveal this in a little less than a week. But just between you and me and the rest of the internet, yes, there will be demons. And devils. And lots of other things you're familiar with, since it's still the same setting after all.

Maybe so.

Pureblooded Azlanti have black hair and purple eyes. But Alaznist and Belimarius have red and white hair. Alaznist even have amber eyes instead of purple eyes. Other runelords don't have purple eyes according to their arts. Does that mean the runelords are not pureblooded Azlanti? Maybe they are Varisian?

When we say an ethnicity has a certain color of hair and eyes, we mean that's the most common type, not the only type.

Often when you have a significant character who's notable in their unique role in history, they'll look different.

When we decide things like hair color and eye color, we use the norms as a starting place but not a shackle.

In Thassilon, the title "First King" and "Emperor" were synonyms. It's not uncommon for leadership positions in either Golarion or the real world to have more than one title.

With PF2 around the corner, would next year be a good time for a Beginner Box 2, for example like that Sandpoint sandbox idea floated some years back?

This post can be taken as encouragement/interest in such a thing. =]

Not a huge amount to add, but I just wanted to chime in that Planar Adventures is absolutely fantastic. I haven't finished it because I've been buried under my own freelance work and getting married, but I don't think I could have asked for 1e to end on a bigger bang.

Xin was exiled along with his followers and apprentices. Was it voluntary or involuntary? I mean, Xin wished to stay but the stubborn Azlanti forcefully ousted him? Or the Azlanti persuaded him to stay but Xin left Azlant willingly to realize his dream?

It was both, but more voluntary than involuntary. Xin and Azlant had pretty much gotten sick of each other.

In First Edition, the biggest size a creature can have is Colossal. But some creatures like Oliphaunt or Kaiju are clearly bigger than Colossal. They even have a special quality called Massive, which effectively makes them one size bigger than Colossal. Thus, will Paizo eventually include a new size category called Massive in Second Edition? I really wish it does. Maybe there is no need to include such a big size category in the Core Rulebook, but perhaps in the future books?

No need.

Colossal is the biggest size, and includes everything larger than Gargantuan. There is no upper limit to a Colossal creature's size, but we almost always keep that limit to a space of 30 simply because when things get much bigger, they get difficult to use in a battle. "Massive" is not a size bigger than Colossal, it's just a bit of extra rules to help contextualize how something that could well cover up a third or more of the entire battle mat works in combat.

Goblin snakes and grindylows have a head that resembles that of a goblin. Are they genetically related to goblins? Are they considered as a type of goblinoids?

They are not goblinoids. Which is why neither has a "goblinoid" subtype.

The goblin snake is akin to nagas, who have human-like heads. Doesn't mean nagas are humans.

There might be some deep-history relationship between them all, in the same way there might be between humans and various other monsters that incorporate human features, such as centaurs, medusas, phase spiders, and the like, but it's not a case of them being genetically related, really. Just thematically related.

In a CotCT game that I'm running, I'm finding our pacing is too fast and I'm planning to use the cinderlands expedition to adapt the the pace to something slower. I've remade almost all of chapter 4 to facilitate this change but I'm worried about a whiplash effect where suddenly, even though plenty is happening, the cinderlands will feel like a drag. Do you have any recommendations as to make this change without players experiencing this?

There's no complaint here by the way, I love crimson throne. I'm just trying to adjust for my players and our style.

Paizo Employee Creative Director

If you and your players feel like the pacing is too fast, then slowing things down shouldn't make it feel like a drag. If it DOES end up feeling like a drag, then your pace before was in fact appropriate.

It's important to double check with your players too to make sure that they're on the same page. Often the concept of speed through an AP will differ between player and GM. Players, after all, do like getting the chance to level up and gain more stuff, and slowing the pace down will frustrate a lot of players.

So, my first recommendation is to make sure ALL of your players feel the same way and are open to the idea of slowing things down. If they are, then just try it out but remain open-minded; at the end of each session talk with your players to find out if they felt the pacing was enjoyable, and be open to further adjustments as you go, including the potential to return to the pace you are playing at now.

Good luck, and have fun!

In We Be Goblins Too!, one of our goblin heroes will be the chieftain of the Birdcrunchers, and other three will be subchieftains. In the art of page 2 of We Be Goblins Free!, I found some clues to determine who officially became the chieftain. According to the art, Chuffy and Mogmurch are sitting on the sides and Reta and Poog are sitting in the middle. Thus Reta or Poog would be the more leading figures among them. Between the two, Reta is doing the talking and her chair is taller. Thus I presumed that Reta is the most leading figure among the four and thus she is the chieftain. Or at least that was what the artist intended. Am I right? In other words, does Paizo assume that Reta is the chieftain and other three are the subchieftains?

Who "officially" becomes chieftain is not something that the adventures or world canon is interested in, since that's gonna be a PC and every game plays out differently and we aren't likely to incorporate this series of adventures into overall canon, since they're so self-contained.

AKA: It's up to you when you play the adventure.

I thought the name of the chieftain of the Licktoad goblins is Gutwad. But according to The Brinewall Legacy, his name is Rendwattle Gutwad. I'm not sure. Between Rendwattle and Gutwad, which is the name and which is the nickname?

Vorka.

In page 14 of The Brinewall Legacy, it is mentioned that the goblin heroes met the skeletons in battle but were swiftly cut down. Thus I thought our four goblin heores died here, which made me really sad. But in We Be Goblins Too!, it is mentioned that the heroes of the Licktoad goblins return home to find their tribe destroyed by human adventurers. I'm not sure. Didn't The Brinewall Legacy confirm their death?

The story of the goblins in the We Be Goblins adventure is next to but not directly part of Brinewall Legacy. Those are different goblins that died in the caves.

In Castles of the Inner Sea, there is no stat blocks for the settlements. Yes, they are castles, not settlements. But some of them, like the dwarven capital city Highhelm, can be considered a city rather than a castle. Thus I was really surprised when I found out there is no stat block for Highhelm in the book. Can you explain why? I fear we will never be ablet o see the stat block for Highhelm, because the city has already been detailed in that book and thus will never detailed again in an adventure path or in a campaign setting book.

Because the book presented them as castles, not cities, so the concept of presenting city stat blocks was nonsensical and likely never even crossed the writer's or developer's minds at the time.

There are far more cities in the game than we'll ever provide stat blocks for anyway. And that said, simply putting a city in one book doesn't mean we'll never go back to it later.

Isn't changing from 3.5 to 4.0 what damaged Dungeons & Dragons and ultimately lead to the rise and success of Pathfinder? How do you anticipate (as a company) avoiding the same downfall with a new edition that doesn't much seem to resemble the previous one?

There are, if I remember some posts correctly, several things in the PF 1.0 rules that are "legacies" from D&D 3.5, kept because Paizo didn't want to roam too far from that ruleset. How much of that remains in PF 2.0?

The changes between 3.5 and 4.0 were really rather immense. The changes between Pathfinder 1st edition and 2nd edition will not be. I anticipate that it's not going to be a significant issue since one of the main goals of 2nd edition is to let us and you keep telling the same sorts of stories we told in the prior edition.

The playtest rules should be out tomorrow though, so in less than 24 hours you can see for yourself. Almost there!
