Mr. Jacobs, I was reading through In Search of Sanity recently and I have a couple of questions regarding The Pathfinder Mythos:

1. I noticed that Nhimbaloth has five domains and six subdomains, but Cthulhu only has four each, does this mean that Nhimbaloth is more powerful than Cthulhu or more well defined or something?

2. If there were an Outer Goddess of bones and destiny, what do you think her name would be?

3. Does the Dominion of The Black have a presence in Tian Xia?

1) Yes. Nhimbaloth is an Outer God, and thus a full deity that gets five domains and six subdomains. Cthulhu is "merely" a Great Old One, and thus only a demigod, and thus grants 4 domains and 4 subdomains. These are standard for deity and demigod domains granted.

2) Dunno. Naming creatures is a tricky thing, and it's not easy to do, especially when you know so little about the thing.

3) It could, but as of yet we haven't said much about that.

Nope. Relatively standard elf naming conventions for them.

What makes you say proteans wouldn't be a good fit for Merisiel?

If she was still more CN than CG, would a vendenopterix (Calistria's divine servitor race) be a good fit?

There ya go. I developed that stuff almost 10 years ago so it's not all that recent in my memory.

What makes me say proteans aren't a good fit for Merisiel is that they're too outlandish and strange and not as interested in relationships and personal fame and wealth and comfort.

Maybe, but it's not as much an alignment thing as it is a Merisiel thing.

There is indeed a chance.

Is there any particular regional, cultural, or species-specific cuisine in the Inner Sea that is seen as "fashionable"?

As in, if one wanted to show off one's sophistication in Westcrown society, is there some form of culinary style seen as particularly refined (sort of analogous to French cuisine in western diplomatic culture)?

Let's say one were to date one of Pathfinder's sex deities, with all that implies. How, in more detail than terse answers (though not necessarily explicit), would a time of passion with the following go?

1. Arshea

2. Lymnieris

3. Calistria

4. Nocticula

5. Socothbenoth

6. Belial

Yup. Fashion is everywhere in the Inner Sea region, but what's fashionable for one place is not for the other. In Westcrown in particular, fashionable = traditional old-time Cheliax stuff. They're kinda stuck in the past there.

Do you feel, it would be worthwhile to create other subtypes of Protean more suitable to expressing the full range of chaotic neutral souls from which they ascend?

Or would you consider it preferable to introduce a separate race of chaotic neutral outsiders to contrast and complement proteans?

Or is it not something that registers as worth devoting space and word-count to?

I've been seeing a lot of hate around the interwebs directed towards gnomes and people feeling that with Halflings their is no need for them got any idea why that is?

Also I'm running a campaign with a Pech based arc and I'm suddenly very interested in these Vault builder dudes, are these the old masters of the Pech from days go by?
Does a sheet currently exist detailing their profile or is all we have on them their challenge rating?

1. You said that the Vault Builders were meant to be insectlike creatures, but somehow the illustrator disobeyed your order and instead drew a centaurlike creature. So, if Paizo do more about the Vault Builders later, like publishing an entire adventure path about them, will you make it sure Paizo make a whole new, accurate illustarion of the Vault Builders which looks like an insect, not a centaur? I really wish their illustration be changed, because their current shape looks very lame and ridiculous. I don't even understand why the Vault Builders and the Vault Keepers are the same race. One is a centaur, and the other is a bug.

2. Anyway, does the illustration of the Vault Keepers in the Emerald Spire Superdungeon satisfy you very much? In other words, do you think the illustration looks very insectlike?

3. When the xiomorns flee to the Plane of Earth, do humans and serpentfolks exist in Golarion? I really wish the answer is not 'unrevealed'.

4. I thought the Emerald Root is a vault. But you said that a typical vault is as big as a nation. Does that mean the vault seed used by Iluchtewhar failed to make a vault(because he's not a Vault Builder), and thus the Emerald Root is not a vault? In other words, is even the smallest of the vaults much, much bigger than the Emerald Root?

5. If the vault seed failed to properly make a vault, then where did all the energy go? I mean, the Emerald Spire is very small compared to a proper vault. Does that mean the bulk of the energy still remains in the seed or maybe in the Emerald Root? Or the energy just dissipated(in other words, wasted)? I ask this because I'm not sure if making the Emerald Root the place for the moment of ascension is logical or not. One cannot experience it in random, ordinary place. It should be a special place that is ripe with eldritch magic. But is the Emerald Root ripe with eldritch magic? You said in previous questions that you personally don't want to include mythic in the Emerald Spire. I don't know if that's because you hate mythic adventures, but anyway does that mean you think there is no remaining magic in the Emerald Root or the vault seed, right?

6. The map of the Emerald Spire described the Emerald Root as a small room that has no way out except for the only exit towards the upper level. But then how did Iluchtewhar get in there in the first place? You said in this page that a vault seed must be used underground, not aboveground. But there is no tunnel seen in the map. Does that mean he just burrowed deep into the soil, and finally reached the Orv level and used the seed? Wow, I don't even know the Vault Keepers have burrow ability.

7. I don't quite understand your answer in the above link. You said that creating a vault is not enough to make you mythic. But being in an area when the vault is created and instead of a vault having most of that energy suffuse and enhance the now-mythic characters, yes, you said. But isn't creating a vault and being in an area when the vault is created are very similar thing? I cannot find the difference here.

8. The vault seed is an artifact. Is it a major artifact, or mnior artifact? A major artifact is so unique that only one of each exists. But the vault seed is so powerful that maybe it can be considered a major artifact. So what do you say?

It's an interesting idea, but there needs to be more... a LOT more... to justify introducing an entirely new race of chaotic neutral outsiders, among which would be "why haven't we heard of them before?" It's kinda too late to do, in other words. A better solution might be to expand upon the specific types of outsiders that serve Calistria in this case.

Actualy some sort of flavor variant of the valkyrie might work out. Something more revenge-themed than death-themed.

I haven't been seeing this hate at all. Maybe you're hanging around the wrong parts of the internet?

Gamers DO tend to latch onto certain elements of the game they love as parts of the game they love to hate, and when they find like-minded gamers they cluster. My guess is that gamers who hate gnomes and halflings probably fostered that hate on how these races have been classically represented in D&D, though.

Vault Builders and Vault Keepers are statted up in the Emerald Spire Superdungeon.

9. You said that the veiled masters are the true masters of the race. It's curious, because I thought the omnipaths, who are clearly more powerful than the veiled masters, are the true masters of the entire aboleth race.

10. In Lords of Madness, you did a great job describing aboleths as a truly frightening race. But because it's the intellectual property of the WIzards of the Coast, you cannot use those stuffs in that book. So, do you regret now that you participated in making Lords of Madness and expended your brilliant ideas about aboleths?

11. It's safe to assume that the aboleths in Golarion have no gender, right? So I should call them it, not he or she, right?

12. If aboleths are aquatic creatures, how did they fight the xiomorns? It's like a shark fighting a bear. Both are very powerful, but normally they cannot fight each other because sharks cannot get out of water. I don't even understand why aboleths decided to fight the xiomorns in the first place. Their life environments are vastly different. Even now, the aboleths are content to let humans rule the suface world. So why not then?

13. When I read Lords of Madness, I was very afraid of aboleths. But now I'm not. Because in pathfinder they are just the least of the entire aboleth race. They are just a bunch of minions now, and the role of hideous masterminds is now given to the veiled masters. Are you content with this result?

14. If the Castrovin Sea is a sea, and not a lake, then how can there be a landlocked body of salt water which is not connected to other seas? I found out in Wikipedia that the Caspian Sea was part of the Paratethys Sea millions years ago, and it became landlocked due to tectonic uplift and a fall in sea level. Do you think the similar thing happened in Golarion? That eons ago the Castrovin Sea was connected to other oceans, but because of tectonic uplift and a fall in sea level, it became landlocked eventually?

15. Is there aboleths, krakens, sahuagins, merfolks, and aquatic elves in the Castrovin Sea? If so, they cannot escape the landlocked sea. How pathetic!

16. Lords of Madness said that psionic aboleth is the canon version, and thus arcane aboleth is not canon. So, if you published Occult Adventures before you published the aboleth and the veiled master, would you have made them psychic creatures, not arcane creatures?

1) I'm not the art director. I don't work with the artists. A book's developer writes a description of the illustrations that need to appear in a book and sends those descriptions to the art director, who then handles the rest. We developers DO get to see sketches and approve them... in theory. In fact, sometimes we don't due to miscommunications or lack of time or other reasons. In the case of Emerald Spire, which was on an INCREDIBLY rushed adventure thanks to additional complications regarding Kickstarter stuff there was no time to replace the art, and I wasn't involved in that element directly anyway as I was working on other products. In time, I hope to be able to order new art for Vault Builders, but that's not very high on my to-do list.

2) I'm not a fan of the art style for the monsters in that book.

3) A lot of time the answer IS "unrevealed" because of lots of good reasons. You need to be patient. I can't just spew out tons of world content at your command, especially in this context, where the content will be forgotten and lost amid the huge amount of posts this thread gets, save for by a few (not me) people who then will be frustrated and disappointed in the future when and if we DO do something with that content and it's different than a semi-random spur-of-the-moment notion I made up on the spot.

4) Vaults are enormous; regions the size of nations. The Emerald Root is a mis-fired vault. He failed because he's not a vault builder. The smallest of the vaults, as shown on the map of Orv in Into the Darklands, is still many miles across.

5) The energy went into creating the emerald spire itself, with the excess just being wasted. What magic remains in the emerald spire is still significant, and is covered and described in the context of the dungeons' various levels.

6) The thousands of years the dungeon's been around means there's lots of time for rooms and tunnels to be formed and go away. That said, greater teleport.

7) It can and it can't. What makes person A mythic will not make person B mythic. The GM gets to decide. Mythic doesn't always do the same thing.

8) Minor artifact, because there are multiple vault seeds. There's no "cap" on how powerful a minor artifact can be but most are less powerful than major artifacts.

9) Omnipaths have a more powerful baseline than veiled masters, but they serve the veiled masters. CR does not always (and often doesn't) double as an indicator of who's in charge.

10) I do not. Those ideas are out there, and you can use them in your game if you want. I don't see the problem. Nor do I regret the money I made writing about aboleths. Nor do I regret the huge honor it was to be able to add to these creatures, who had been a favorite D&D monster of mine since they first showed up back in the early 80s in one of my favorite adventures, "Dwellers of the Forbidden City."

11) Sure. Although veiled masters do tend to associate with genders as a side effect of spending so much time posing as humans or whatever.

12) Magic. It's not like a shark fighting a bear AT ALL. It's like an alien wizard fighting a different alien wizard. And the standard aboleth doesn't fight directly anyway; it sends dominated monsters out to fight for it. It can dominate plenty of monsters capable of fighting on land.

13) Yes. It still works for me. If you want to be afraid of aboleths again, ask your GM to have one attack a 1st level character you built, I guess. Aboleths in D&D and aboleths in Pathfinder are pretty close to identical in power. Furthermore, if you want an aboleth to be powerful, give it enough class levels in rogue or wizard or psychic or fighter or whatever you prefer until it's finally a high enough CR to scare you again. We give aboleths class levels all the time in adventures. Check out Pathfinder #99 for a recent example.

14) Because the person who named it a "sea" wasn't an expert on the differences of lakes, seas, and oceans I guess. Wasn't me. And maybe when we eventually get around to talking more about it, research will suggest we make it a freshwater sea. I don't know. Have patience and when we do eventually explore it in a book at some point in the future, there's your answer.

15) So, since a body of water is landlocked, that means that everything inside is pathetic? That seems hyperbolic and ridiculous.

16) Lords of Madness is D&D, not Pathifnder. What's canon for D&D is not canon for Pathfinder. In Pathfinder, aboleths are neither "arcane" nor "psychic," because those words do not make sense when applied to a monster, really.

Ah, yes, that situation. :( To frame it in the form of a question, can you pass on our (well, my) support to them please James?

You have any topping available to make your perfect hamburger, what do you put on it?

Have you had a chance to play Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu yet?

Did you, Adam or Wes come up with the opening encounter of Strange Aeons? Basically through encounter Area A.

I came up with the original idea for it as part of writing the outline. Wes designed it/wrote it. Adam developed it.

13. When I read Lords of Madness, I was very afraid of aboleths. But now I'm not. Because in pathfinder they are just the least of the entire aboleth race. They are just a bunch of minions now, and the role of hideous masterminds is now given to the veiled masters.

One aboleth almost TPK'ed our entire level 10 party in Skulls and Shackles. James: are we talking about the same CR 7 monster that has Dominate Monster as a spell-like ability (i.e. 9th level spell, DC 22, lasts 16 days if you fail your save?)

I have no idea who that is, and I'm too busy and not intrigued enough to Google her.

She was one of the hosts on Great British Bake-Off and a general delight. She also did a show where she and a food critic would eat food typical for a period of history for a week whilst playing dress-up and doing little skits.

TL/DR - She's the bestest of the best.

Okay, new question! Um...uh...Oh, I know! Do the Mordant Spire elves have any different naming conventions compared to those of normal elves? Is there a noticeable Azlanti influence on Mordant Spire elf names?
Nope. Relatively standard elf naming conventions for them.

IF I recall correctly, they speak Azlanti even in preference to elven, so would their names reflect this?

If you recall correctly, then perhaps.

What's your favorite type of mustard - Dijon, brown, or yellow?

Yes.

AKA I pretty much like all forms of mustard, and enjoy varying it up so I don't get tired of any one form. My current fave is jalapeno-laced yellow mustard.

I don't think so I first discovered it watching a youtuber and DM who's been DMing for years and whom I am very fond of, he's generally quite insightful. Anyway whilst he was showing people some map making program and talking about campaign settings he mentioned he specifically doesn't like Gnomes because he has halflings and he doesn't see the point in both. His following seemed to agree and I looked into it a bit more and apparently its a thing xD

To be clear, they don't dislike halflings, just Gnomes oddly.

I assume thats not available online then? I may have to get this lol Pech are like my favorite thing. XD

Do you have a personal favorite fey people to muck around with? base a campaign upon perhaps xD

Why are some people so intent on holding others back from achieving the safety and happiness everyone deserves, instead of focusing on improving their own lives? It feels like a lot of people are willing to make themselves miserable because they can't bear the idea of "THOSE people" just living life like most people want to.

All of our products are available as PDFs.

My favorite fey to mess with people are nymphs that have gone bad. Redcaps are fun too, though.

For some people hate is easier than love.
