Where did Galt's name come from? It always makes me think of Atlas Shrugged...

The Gauls I suspect, It's an old school Celtic tribe that lived in the area that is now france

I liked the setting of Galt while looking through the Inner Sea guide. Maybe because I'm a bit of a history nut and it struck me as a nice parody of sorts to the First French Revolution.

We had French exchange students stay with us every summer when I was a kid. :-)

James, did you ever have exchange students stay with your family?

Hi James I have a question about Nocticula

Wrath of the Reightious spoilers:

Could the PCs actions in wrath of the reightious trigger her redemption to CN? How long would such a redemption take? And would the PCs need to be directly involved? Or is it something that she would just do oh her own at some point?
I like the idea of a demon lord abandoning her evil nature and my PCs have redeemed a lot of people over the course of the first 4 books so far and would really like to help her become what she wants to be. One of them would even take her as their patron if she wasn't evil. So I think after the campain is over that's one thing they want to try and accomplish ( that and help aravashnial take out tree razer in Kuomintang) and I have no idea how that will work logistically.

Mr. James Jacobs,

When I ran Serpent Skull for a friend of mine I made the spirit of Garund his traveling companion. I am thinking of doing something similar for the group I am currently running through Hell's Rebels. It seemed fitting considering the goals of a certain individual.

Assuming I use a race/class combo to represent the spirit rather than build a creature from scratch, besides oracle what do you think would be a good class to go with?

Although if I did go with building the spirit from scratch, what creature type would you suggest?

A few months back, I ordered a copy of the Call of Cthulhu RPG from Amazon in the UK, to be shipped here to NZ. It arrived water damaged. More recently, I ordered some more books from there, including a Lovecraft anthology that included the Call of Cthulhu story. Only one of the books in that package was water damaged: no prizes for guessing which one. I've never had this problem any other time when ordering from overseas.

Should I be worried? Is this a sign? Are the stars right?

James, thanks for answering the previous questions. Bummer that Galt's out, at least for now, but I get it. I'll try to lay off bringing that corner of the Inner Sea up in every possible thread.

In the meantime! Completely leaving Golarion. Via the magic of the Internet, my original D&D group from high school recently resumed a campaign that's lain dormant since the 90s. Way back then we'd journeyed from Oerth to Krynn (it was my fault; I read too many Dragonlance books as a kid), where we left off, but upon reconvening we immediately decided to make our way home again.

Anyway, our characters made it to Oerth but found themselves on the wrong side of the Flanaess. They've just begun the trek overland from the North Kingdom to the Wild Coast, whence everything began so long ago. Going forward, I've volunteered to handle some of the DM duties, so, tl;dr, here's my question:

Any suggestions at all for what/where/who to throw at a 10th-level party crossing the Flanaess from east to west?

When running an AP that is an above ground building with no windows what is the assumed light levels?

Does Golarion assume torches are on the wall, even if they are not mentioned, or is it assumed to be dark?

Two questions for the Esteemed Dinosaur Overlord:

1. What is your opinion on the Indoctrination Theory?

2. Which ending do you generally choose?

They could indeed; at the very least, if the PCs handle themselves JUST RIGHT, they should be able to start that ball rolling for another mythic group to come along and finish. Certainly, redeeming a demon lord is about as mythic a storyline as you can get!

Medium makes most sense to me, but setting it up as a witch patron could work as well. I wouldn't build it as a creature.

Ooo... It's been a decade since I've really had my head in Greyhawk lore, but I seem to remember that there were a few articles in Dragon Magazine that dropped hints about what was off-map in Greyhawk... although I have since found out that the source of that inside information wasn't necessarily correct. Once upon a time, though, it was Kara-Tur that was over there, if I remember correctly, before Forgotten Realms stole it.

In our published adventures, we usually include a "site features" section at the start of each encounter area or dungeon that includes the typical ambient light features. In a case where those details are missing, let common sense be your guide, but at the same time, if you know your party has absolutely no way to create light, make sure you don't hit them with areas of darkness unless that's the whole point of the encounter, to complexify their actions by darkness.

1) A google search suggests that you're asking me about Mass Effect. If that's the case, I generally reject that theory. It's neat, and interesting, but in the end kinda not supported in-game. Who knows what revelations the next Mass Effect game might reveal, but I'm actually quite happy with the way the trilogy played out, and my ONLY complaints are about the way the internet reacted so childishly to a story that ended somberly with themes of sacrifice and the like. Which, if you'd been paying attention to the entire trilogy, is exactly on target and not a shock at all.

2) I prefer the synthesis ending.

All divine spellcasters are powered by their devotion, regardless of whether that devotion is to a deity, a pantheon, a belief, or whatever.

When a divine caster casts a spell, where does the power behind that spell come from? Does the source depend on the object of the caster's devotion?

We deliberately do not define where magic is from in Pathfinder or in Golarion, as part of an attempt to keep it mysterious.

Arcane casters gain magic power from focused study. Divine casters gain magic power from faith and belief. Psychic spellcasters gain magic naturally, as an inborn trait. But what actually grants that magical power is... well... magic.

Obviously there are crossovers—a sorcerer kinda combines arcane and psychic magic in this way, for example.

Whoa. Reading up a little, looks like (supposedly) Kara-Tur initially was intended to be a western part of Oerik before it went to the Realms. Or something like that. I'd never heard such a thing. Pretty neat.

Kind of like the idea of some eastern flavor in our campaign, though. Gonna take a look.

If you want this to have a chance to be part of the FAQ you need to post your question in the rules forum. The design team does not read this thread, nor is this thread a place to set rules precedents.

They'd be something that I'd want to be directly involved in, be it a campaign setting or a novel or an AP or a module or whatever. They could involve ANYTHING, as long as I'm involved, and at this point I've no real plans to do much with them yet, but do want to explore this development someday in the future somehow.

So, Inner Sea Faiths put in more nuance about the relations between worshipers of Norgorber and Achaekek- namely that while they two faiths generally cooperate sometimes, devotees of Norgie's Father Skinsaw aspect are not extended any such consideration.

Does this notation offer a way to salvage some element of your original plans which involved having the two religions at odds?

Given Achaekek's focus, does he harbor any particular ill-will toward the Ascended above and beyond his ordinary "reserve" with other deities?

Kurgess and Kord have more than a passing similarity- was Kurgess devised as a Kord stand-in in particular, or was he more of a "wait, we don't have a god for that?" kind of deal? (I'm not as up on my Greyhawk deities as I am for other settings,so if this is wildly-off base, feel free to just go, "You're wildly off-base," and leave it at that)

Favorite Greyhawk deity?

Favorite Toho/Daiei kaiju? If it's Godzilla, second-favorite of their kaiju?

It's complicated, but yeah for a cleric (and in fact ANY divine caster who worships a deity) your faith and your god/goddess are more or less the same from this viewpoint. So that if your deity dies, you lose your ability to use the magic linked to that deity.

It's not really something we've quantified or detailed much at all though, and so I reserve the right to change things if needed! ;-)

The relationship between the faiths of Achaekek and Norgorber is complex, and it goes beyond what tidbits we dropped in those books. In time, I actually hope to explore that further, but am not ready to do so at this time. (But yes, the bit I put in for the Achaekek entry, which I wrote, is part of a course correction back toward where I intended things to go originally...)

Achaekek has no particular ill-will toward the Ascended.

Kurgess isn't a Kord stand-in. We just needed a sports god. A deity of physical prowess that wasn't also a war god.

Favorite Greyhawk deity = Wee Jas.

Favorite Toho kaiju = Godzilla. Second favorite = Gigan or Biolante.

Favorite Daiei kaiju = Legion.

Not really. I wouldn't have a good place to store them or display them, what with my teeny tiny RPG industry paycheck (a one bedroom apartment is hardly enough room to keep a Godzilla suit on display). If I did happen to get ahold of one of the suits, I'd donate/give it to the Sci Fi Museum in downtown Seattle.

A rare Lovecraft book or the like? That's a LOT easier to keep safe in a small apartment.

So anyway, Skinsaw cultists and Red Mantis aren't supposed to have a good relationship right? Does that mean Red Mantis wasn't aware of who they were buying Vorel's fungus thingies from or that they are willing to set that aside for business dealings?

Like I said, it's complicated. But the short version is that the Red Mantis is aware of who they're buying the fungus from, but in that case, the ends justified the means. You don't always have to fight your enemies. Sometimes, paying them is the easier solution.
