I'm pretty sure that nagaji can blink. Unless we've said otherwise in print, they can blink. If they DIDN'T blink, then that would indeed imply some sort of game mechanic versus certain things... but then again, we don't give snakes those mechanics, so maybe it doesn't matter.

Hopefully helpful post...

The nagaji are a race of ophidian humanoids with scaled skin that mimics the dramatic appearance of true nagas. Like serpents, they have forked tongues and lidless eyes, giving them an unblinking gaze that most other races find unnerving.

How's the weather in Seattle?

Hmmm... another example of a hardcover rulebook taking the flavor in directions that I'd rather they hadn't... :-(

Frustrating, but in this case not all that damaging for canon I suppose. So yeah, sounds like nagaji don't blink. When they sleep, they just look like they're lying there but they can't see and are as likely to wake as any other race. Nor do they have any particular advantages or disadvantages as far as light or gaze attacks. I'd like to say that at least they have nictating membranes if they lack actual eyelids... but meh.

They can persist in this state indefinitely, or the guest can return to its own body (if available) by touch, transfer into a suitable vessel (such as a clone), or take over another body as if using magic jar (with no receptacle).

So this part about transfer into a suitable vessel, or take over another body as if using Magic Jar but with no receptacle. Does this mean that if I used this ability and jumped into the body of the enemy it acts as magic jar in terms of length of time? Or does it work in an indefinite state now that the soul is kicked out of the body and killed?

Rant about Weaponized Hairstyles
Prehensile Hair (su), White Hair (su) and Strangling Hair (spell) are all available to a Samsaran Hexcrafter Magus with a dip in the White Haired Witch archetype and the samsaran alternate racial trait.

All refer to "your hair" being weaponized in some way. What the hair will or can do is described differently, however. For White Hair, there is an intelligence modifier for damage, but not for hitting or CMB rolls. But for Prehensile Hair, there is an intelligence modifier for all three. Strangling Hair does it's own thing entirely.

Which abilities transfer between the two class features? Was the White Haired Witch archetype's White Hair intended to function identical to Prehensile Hair? How many hair attacks are created from this; two, three or just one?

Maintaining a Spell in Spell Combat
Spell combat says that you can take standard actions to cast spells as well as use physical combat within a full-round action. Does this mean that you can use the "maintain concentration" standard action in spell combat or do we have to wait for a magus arcana for that to become a reality?

In what way do the samsaran arrive on this world if they aren't born naturally? Are they miraculous births, ala Aphrodite being born from sea foam and squid shells, ala Padmasambhava being incarnated as an 8-year old from a lotus blossom, ala the children of Deucalion and Phyrra?

Technically, nothing prevents a samsaran sorcerer from having the oni bloodline, but does that make an oni-blooded samsaran a contradition or merely unlikely?

I'm pretty sure I actually haven't answered that, since I tend not to answer rules questions and suggest these questions are asked on the appropriate rules forum instead so they can be tagged with a FAQ request and so the design team can see them.

You started with the indication about a rant, and that pretty much turned me off to the question. I answer a LOT of questions on this thread, and when I get the inkling that a question is filled with negativity (which labeling it as a rant does, like it or not), I generally skip the question entirely for my own sanity and mental health.

Which is why I asked you to re-ask the question without using the word rant or phrasing things in a way that would feel antagonistic. Frankly, simply omitting the word "rant" might be enough.

Haven't looked at them yet—haven't really had much time or energy to read much of what we publish at all lately unless it directly relates to something I'm working on... and sometimes not even then, as indicated by Hell Unleased going unread while I was working on Hell's Rebels.

Do you think a book called Classes of Golarion that, rather than being crunch-centric with archetypes and class options, was more about how different classes fit into various parts of the Inner Sea region, as well as organizations related to those classes or similar classes and the perspective of different parts of society to the various classes would be a good book? Or would you fear too many people would be expecting a lot of crunch from such a book and would be disappointed?

Hello James,

I have been doing research on the Harbingers of Fate as they have been a personal favorite of mine since I first learned of them a few years back. Naturally with the passing of their last supposed prophecy, I have a few questions regarding the ultimate fate of the organization.

1. Do the Harbingers have any reason to stay together considering they failed to trigger the Age of Glory?

2. Has the identity of the Book of 1,000 Whispers been decided (even if it must be kept secret)?

3. Would the Harbingers potentially try and seek out the author had they discovered the prophesies to be a lie?

4. Do the Harbingers of Fate have any potential for appearing in a Module, AP, etc in the future?

Hi James

I have a question about the redemption of evil and the other alignments. I was reading the alignment section of the PFSRD and found that lawful good is all about justice and neutral good has a listed philosophy of "redeemer." How would a lawful good character particularly a paladin handle the evil persons redemption ( in this case Nurah from wrath of the righteous) should he want to bring her to justice and consider her lost to evil? Or would he be open to the possibility of her redemption? If so would he still want to punish her for her crimes?

Hair: What you're seeing is three different ways of doing a similar thing. Look at goblins, kobolds, and mites—all three are small-sized human-shaped low CR foes. Strip the flavor away and they're kinda the same thing. But the flavor, and the way the rules make them work, make them different and add variety and diversity to the options for small human-shaped foes. This is a strength of the game. Likewise, having three different ways you can achieve weaponized hair that all work somewhat differently allows you to build three different characters along that trope. The intent is NOT for you to be able to take all three and have them all stack together perfectly. They were not intended to function identically. They are intended to be diverse. If they were intended to function identically... there'd be no reason to build the second one at all because it's just a reprint.

Spells in Combat: This is a better question to ask in the rules forum—my suspicion is that it wasn't really in the forefront of the designers' minds on how magus magic would mix with concentration, but I suspect that for magi, spells that require concentration simply aren't as excellent choices for them. This is fine. Not every spell needs to be equally a good choice for every spellcaster. A spell that requires concentration might suck for a magus compared to a wizard, but a spell that augments your weapon sucks for a wizard when compared to a magus. Yet both can find situations where using those spells is a good option. Sometimes a wizard uses a weapon. Sometimes a magus isn't fighting and wants to achieve an effect while not in combat.

Other: When a samsaran dies, it reincarnates somewhere else in the world. It's body forms out of nothingness, just as the spell reincarnate creates a new body out of nothingness. They tend to manifest in this way when no one is looking—no one ever SEES a samsaran appear when it incarnates. They can do so during a blink of the eye, for example. The flavor of an oni-bloodline is weird for a samsaran, but just as it's possible for an aasimar to have an abyssal bloodline or a succubus to have a celestial bloodline, it's possible for an oni bloodline for a samsaran. In fact, those unusual choices often make for really great character backgrounds. Of course, your GM is well within their rights to nix such weird combos if they just don't work for the game they want to run.

I'm not sure what "Dark Archives" you're talking about (no context for me), but I suspect that it is from their association with forbidden or spooky magic, judging solely on why I might name an archive that if I were to name it.

We did some stuff with the Harbingers in this year's Pathfinder Society scenarios, particularly the special we ran at Gen Con.

1) Not so much; with each year that passes, they'll grow increasingly fractured.

2) Not that I'm aware of.

3) Probably not; see #1 above. They'll lose their focus and drive too quickly.

4) At one point, yes... but not so much any more. This is a great example of why it's such a bad idea for us to tie something so directly into the timeline. It worked for Baba Yaga because that was a high profile thing that several of Paizo's lead designers and developers were aware of. The fact that the Harbingers had a hard date wired into their prophecy snuck in without many people noticing and no one really kept track of it, and when it was brought to my attention that the TIME WAS NOW, there simply wasn't anywhere we could incorporate them, since work was already well underway on Iron Gods, Giant Slayer, and other products that had a decidedly NON Harbinger theme.

I imagine that a lawful good person would be a LOT more strict and unforgiving. Less friendly and encouraging, overall, and more orderly and logical about the redemption. Whether or not any character thinks another should be executed, imprisoned, or redeemed is more a choice of that character's personality and not something their alignment should decide for them. A lawful good character would ABSOLUTELY be open to the possibility for redemption, but such a character would simply want more structure and oversight to the redemption, whereas a neutral good character would be more kindly and supportive and trusting of the character who is seeking redemption. Chaotic good, for what it's worth, would be more along the lines of "if you want it, it'll happen—good for you and I'll support you, but you need to make the decisions yourself."

Which is why I see neutral good as the best at redeeming evil, and why I made Sarenrae, a neutral good deity, the primary redeemer of the game. Lawful good is too strict and chaotic good is too lax—they both support redemption, but they're just not as good at it overall as are neutral good characters.

Oh. I'd say metaphorically dark. I wasn't really involved in that name or its creation though; this is a better question for John Compton.

Hi James

Not sure if this should be in the rules forum or not but, and you further upgrade the enhancement bonus of spicific armor or weapons that aren't artifacts? Like armor of the pious for example, it's only a +1 that can be a +3 for 10 rounds per day. Could a player pay the difference between a +1 and +2 armor enhancement to raid it to a +2? If so would that also increase the once per day ability to make it a +4 for ten rounds?

Upgrades for specific armor and specific weapons are certainly possible, but you'll need the GM's permission to do that kind of thing. She or he would be the one to decide how the upgrade works.

I would hope that the Shensen from Jason Nelson's Forgotten Realms game and the Shensen from Warcraft would pop in as well, in which case they'd have a full party of 4 to go on adventures for. They'd get along like sisters—that is to say, pretty well but would fight now and then.

Theoretically, ANYTHING could kill another ANYTHING if you want to tell the story that way.

But if you slave yourself to the rules as written, no, Bokrug couldn't kill Cthulhu, or vice-versa. The Great Old Ones can't be killed by mere rules.

Hey James, are Grey Dragons and Platinum Dragons still a part of the Pathfinder world? There is nothing that contradicts them and they offer a solid explanation for the origin of all the dragons that aren't true dragons.

We have no plans to do anything with gray dragons or platinum dragons, nor the convocation of dragons anytime soon. Whether or not they're in YOUR Golarion is up to your GM, but we won't be going forward assuming that they're an official part of the world.

A fair amount of what ended up in Dragons Revisited is cool, but some of it doesn't fit the themes or needs of the campaign setting, either because it takes things in a direction that's too close to other established D&D settings, or because it simply prevents us from telling the types of stories we want to tell in the setting.

One-shots are, basically, one-time adventures. Often times, you create a character for the adventure, and you may never play the character afterward again. I've seen them, mostly, used for either, "what if" scenarios (what if our party fought a CR 20 demon horde, and 2 tarrasque's at once!), or to provide background details (running an adventure for NPCs as a sort of flashback).

Hey James, I have a question about the aboleth omnipath; specifically, where does it rank in the hierarchy of aboleth? Is it superior to the veiled master?

In the Inner Sea Bestiary, veiled masters are specifically noted as being in charge of standard aboleths, while in turn being subservient to the race's true masters. The more powerful omnipath in Occult Bestiary, however, is much more vague in its description, never outright stating where the omnipath sits in the aboleth hierarchy.

(I also know that there are at least two more high-powered aboleths noted in Occult Mysteries; an armored leviathan and some kind of intelligent swarm. Can't wait to see these some day).

Thanks for clearing this up if possible!

My favorite one-shot adventure ever? Hmmm... probably the time I ran "Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure" for a friend in a marathon session in a tree house in the woods...

The first time I ran "Prodigy of Death" for folks at Paizocon. The group REALLY got into the game and it fit perfectly into the time slot and ended on a really cool final note and got rounds of applause from all the players.

We haven't really nailed down an aboleth "hierarchy" yet. In the meantime, you can use their CRs as a way to rank them; the higher the CR, the more important they are for the overall society, I suppose. That INCLUDES unique veiled masters who have class levels, of course—many of them do, which puts them usually near the top of it all.

We haven't yet detailed the race's "true masters." Waiting for a special moment for that unveiling.

Consider me excited for big alghollthu plots and reveals!

Is Razmir getting a section in Inner Sea Faiths? (Since he's a false god, I'd assume it will have different information from the rest; no Obedience, for example.)

What is Inner Sea Faiths?
