Is there a way to make it permanent? or would you just have to redo the spell every 10 days or so? Also is there no other way for those classes who can't cast that? Like Ranger, Fighter, or Paladin?

Roleplay. I'm serious. Let your GM know you want a dragon mount or companion as a character goal, and if your GM is cool with it... he/she might build that into the campaign as part of your character's storyline. Gaining a dragon minion as a quest reward after going on a long adventure is a great way to handle this.

In my opinion... it's a MUCH better way than simply auto-gaining something as unique and powerful as a dragon as a companion as a result of a class ability.

So I guess getting a dragon mount for PFS is a no-go, ah man.

A summoner can kind of fake it.

Let's get back to questions, folks, to keep the thread on track. Thanks!

1)Well how about with a dragonrider class/archetype we use the basic rules for animal companions and base them on "lesser dragons" such as wyverns, drakes, dragonkin, etc. also add new species with different forms taking inspiration from How to Train Your Dragon and similar series?

2)What about a build your own mechanic like a summoner, but unlike your summoner, what you make at first level is what the dragon will be like, in other words no changing it every level? example you design a flying two legged dragon with spines on it's tail that it can fire and a acid breath, it would be immune to acid plus standard dragon immunities.

3)So what movies have you seen lately? How did you like them?

1) Would that really make people who want to ride a fire-breathing dragon happy? I doubt it. It's certainly a powerful idea, the dragon-riding hero, but I remain convinced that the BEST way to handle this is via story, NOT via class feature. Or if it IS to be a class feature, it needs to be built in from the start—both in game rules and setting rules.

2) Not a fan of that either.

3) Killer Mermaid: Disappointing and silly.
Honeymoon: Creepy and well made.
Not Safe For Work: Pretty good and well-paced.
Big Bad Wolves: Fascinating and some of the darkest humor I've seen in a long time.
Jupiter Ascending: Never boring to look at, but I wish I'd seen the 2D and not the 3D version. Wish they'd put as much effort into the characters and story as they did on the world design and effects.
Kingsmen: 97% delightful, 3% infuriating, and one of the coolest fight scenes I've seen in a while.
Starry Eyes: Creepy and disturbing, but a little annoying too.
Predestination: Mindblowing and awesome.
The Remaining: Stupid.
The Hunted: Pretty good found footage flick about a haunted forest.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: VERY good and incredible effects.
The Equalizer: Quite excellent.
Fury: One of the best recent war movies I've seen.
The Maze Runner: Pretty good; neat monsters!
Only Lovers Left Alive: Hypnotic and pretty.
ABCs of Death 2: Runs the gamut from awesome to lame.

Howdy James,

At what age is the general population of Golarion expected to marry? Do they have a more modern outlook on the subject, or is it a more medieval "you're 15 now, why haven't you settled down?" sort of thing.

That varies wildly between regions, cultures, and ethnicities. Overall though, I suppose it's safest to assume toward the same ages that we've set for starting ages for various character classes.

Hi James, I need your help who at Paizo would I direct a complaint about material being banned in PFS. The person that oversees Mike Brock.

For the most part the PFS guys do a great job but I am tired of them banning certain material mainly the material that I really like from being used IN PFS. Their latest offense against animals is banning the Warcat of Rull. I would not be so bent but I spent $20.00 on the book that It was in and now I can not use it because it was deemed overpowered.

Have you seen the artwork for this cool kitty it is just over the top.
I even bought a mini that resembles it somewhat. The Warcat of Rull just deserves to be used by animal loving PC's through out Golarion.

PS I am waiting for next months release of Pathfinder Unchained and will buy it as soon as it hits the shelves at my local game store.

Who came up with the Dorvae from Bestiary 4? Is there a story behind its creation? And was it a test run for a wider fiendish "race", like the kyton and ogre mage in the first Bestiary?

How much of those infuriating 3% of Kingsmen occurred in the end scene?

I believe Wes did... but I'm not sure. He'd be the one to ask though. It's not a "test run" though. It's a single category monster.

Erik Mona would be the one to talk to, but what gets banned in PFS is not stuff we idly block from play. Mike does a lot of work making sure that PFS is as fun and fair and manageable as possible. Not EVERYTHING we publish is right or correct for PFS. Might I suggest a home game as an option for playing a character that's not appropriate for the massively multiplayer offline campaign that is PFS?

If I had to guess, the warcat isn't allowed because it's thematically not appropriate for a non-Belkzen character. It's meant more as a monster or a companion to an enemy NPC. Not everything we publish SHOULD be a player character option, because that "normalizes" things too much. As an orc pet... the warcat is just not appropriate thematically for PCs.

Not to step on Mr. Jacobs's toes, but I believe there are posts from PFS leadership that hint at a war cat boon. So don't lose hope! :D

Mr. Jacobs:

Are there any more outsider races you plan to bring into the game?

Garuda are only a single creature, like ogre magi and evangelists once were, yet they received an aasimar heritage in Blood of Angels. Does this mean more to come?

Is there a philosophical theme that you want to build an AP around, but haven't had a chance to? Or one that you can't find a way to create a story for? For example,

Iron Gods, Kingmaker:
the way Unity represented religious belief through the alien lens of an all-powerful AI, or Nyrissa represented mad obsession and the effects of losing one's heart.

Is there a story you're waiting for Occult Adventures to tell, similar to Wrath of the Righteous waiting on a mythic system (bugs aside).

On that note, actually... do you still want to fix Mythic? (Do you even consider it broken?) I got the impression from a previous question that the forum response to WotR left you completely embittered with Mythic. I think the idea was really innovative and cool, and I'd like to see Paizo refine it a bit more, reining in the problematic aspects. (Less extra attacks and unstoppable spells, more Seven-League Steps and Mirror Dodges, etc.) I hope you and the rest of the staff can find the desire... not to mention the time.

I guess this is evolving away from a question, but I want to ask you to not give up hope. I was here through that entire era, and I saw how angry people were (and are, about the ACG). It makes me sad and upset to see people fight or get angry or mean... it's part of why I didn't start posting until recently, and why I try to make things nicer for you and everyone else whenever I post.

Embarrassment:
I almost made myself cry writing that. :x

So please know that someone here wants more Mythic content, although some official revisions wouldn't be unappreciated. :)

Can we have more AP material related to Shelyn or Cayden Cailean, please? I don't mean articles or such, but integration into adventures (like Desna in WotR, Nethys in Mummy's Mask, or Abadar in CotCT). More Calistria would be nice too... if you can get away with it. ;)

Do you have any sway over the minis line? I do notice a dinosaur is in the next set, as well as a veiled master... your work?

Thank you for putting up with my inane questions. You don't know how much it means to me to feel like someone is listening. :)

First off... please try to do multiple posts if your questions start turning into a wall of text. 10 lines is a good place to stop and start a new post. Much more than that and it gets difficult to reply to questions due to the size of the text window and the fact that these boards truncate quotes. And if you have to put spoiler tags... well, try not to, since they further complicate the process of referencing the original post and answering questions. Numbering your questions also helps if you have multiple questions in a single post...

Answers:

1) Yes, but I'm not going to reveal them yet.

2) It makes it possible, but certainly doesn't guarentee it. Peri got it too. The MAIN reason we chose to do that was because without those two, the heritage section for Aasimars would have been way too short compared to the tiefling one.

3) Yes, but since I WILL Have that chance... Not gonna say more. Although Hell's Rebels lets me explore the philosophy that freedom is better than overwhelming law, even if it causes more unrest and danger than overwhelming law.

4) Yes, but unlike Mythic, you can tell Occult themed stories without the Occult book, and so I've done a LOT of them already.

5) At this point I'm pretty down on Mythic. A few folks in particular on these boards really wore me down and made me really frustrated and unhappy wiht how Wrath turned out. A classic case of the vocal minority having a STRONG influence on things, as it were. I suspect we'll continue to use mythic on monsters now and then, but at this point, I'm like 98% convinced those rules belong to the GM and not to the players. That, and the fact that there really wasn't a lot of thought put in during the playtest about how mythic impacts high level play, which was PRECISELY what I wanted it for, was frustrating. Yeah, I am indeed bitter about it.

6) I'm glad you started posting. This place needs more upbeat and friendly people like you! And thanks for the kind words and encouragement.

7) No plans yet to do more about Shelyn or Cayden... a LITTLE bit in Hell's Rebels for them but not a lot.

8) I absolutely do. Erik's the one who picks what we make minis of, more or less, but he's VERY greatly influenced by the art we have and my advice. So if I put in lots of pictures of dinosaurs, say, and they look cool, well... dinos happen.

9) No problem; glad to help! :D

2) Same with gathlains... but they're more likely a race from the First World that doesn't really have much interest in the Material Plane. Still... haven't placed them yet either.

3) They didn't evolve; they were magically generated by Nexian spellcasters.

2) Huh. Coming to think about it, even though bestiary entry isn't Golarion canon, it does say they come to material plane due to curiousness and for adventures. Which logically means that race lives in first world and only rare few who are adventurers would come to material plane meaning they wouldn't have any sort of placement in Golarion as a society.

I'm assuming bestiary entry isn't claiming with "many to migrate" that ALL members of that race are so curious that they come to material plane in millions <_< That'd be ridiculous

3) I was referring to description "When Geb’s magic despoiled his kingdom, the archmage Nex enlisted the renegade druid Ghorus to create a form of plant life that could survive in the blighted wasteland and sustain his starving people. Eventually, the plants evolved sentience and ambulatory bodies mimicking the appearance of their human farmers and consumers." so yeah, I'm aware they aren't naturally evolved.

I was assuming the guy who created them made them from some existing plant before they turned humanoid so I was curious what plant that was. But if the guy created them as humanoid crop food for some reason... Well, that would be really creepy <_<;

Anyway, speaking of dinosaurs, I'm glad you guys are doing more with feathered dinosaurs. Not just because its more accurate, but because I feel like feathered dinosaurs are cool in their own way.

(also, speaking of minis, I'm on the camp that hopes one day there will be even one mini for each of non core races <_<; Fingers crossed that one day that will happen...)

Anyhoo, new questions!:

1) What do you personally feel like should be the reason why as player you should choose to play a particular race? Is it the fluff, race fitting your sense of coolness, race having abilities that both thematically and mechanically lets you do cool stuff, race fitting story and/or setting, race being one you can relate to and roleplay well or something else? Maybe even little of all of those reasons?

2) Is Lamashtu portrayed(pregnant three eyed jackal head woman?) same way in Tian Xia?

3) Is Shemhazian demon backstory from 3.5 Rise of the runelords books still canon? Them being created because Lamashtu has empyreal lord Shemhazai captured and tortured?

4) So Lamashtu has horrible spawns, Rovagug has horrible spawns, if Lamashtu and Rovagug would somehow(and really unlikely) have together horrible spawns, would horribleness be exponential?

5) Are there fiend lords of any type that are specifically known only in Tian Xi? I can't from top of my head remember any fiend ruler that fits Eastern Asia theme wise.

6) Are aeons used in any Paizo adventure? I'm curious to find more about more obscure outsider types

7) Is it just me or do iathavos qilippoth look almost... Cute? I mean, yeah, in close up they'd probably look gross and filled with squirming worms or something, but in bestiary pic they look kinda "ugly cute" with their round ball shaped body and big red dot eyes.

Odd Cyclops question, I know in setting they at one time had an advanced civilization. However now they are essentially hunter gatherers. Would you know if in setting they are actually less intelligent than their ancestors like say Azlanti and Morlocks, or are they simply bereft of education and the apparatus of their earlier civilization?

So, I'm not sure if this has been asked already or not, and... well, I can't really read through the last 1000 or so pages of posts, but I vaguely recall some earlier mention that there will probably be a second edition of Pathfinder sometime down the road.

Is that still a likely future goal, or is Unchained basically taking the place of a new edition of the rules, with the changes it's making to the rules and some of the classes?

If it is still a likely goal, do you think Pathfinder will be sticking to the D20 format, or will it move away and define itself with it's own system?

On a different note regarding Mythic rules and Wrath of the Righteous: I actually really enjoyed them both. Wrath of the Righteous made for an amazing experience where myself and my friends fought against all impossible odds to halt a demon apocalypse. It was an extremely challenging and rewarding experience, and I liked how the mythic rules gave us that feeling of being in a league of our own. :)

I'm not sure what problems or 'bugs' there were with both as I didn't really see any, but I had fun, the people I played with had fun, and the GM had fun and that's really all that matters, and it was thanks to the effort that went into writing it.

So yeah, cheers, and thanks James. Hope you feel better in time.

Ostog remains unslain. I'm pretty sure that if that were to change, this site would not be able to hide that fact.

Unchained is our design team playing around with the rules, trying out some new stuff, and generally just having "fun" with the game, in much the same way "Unearthed Arcana" played around with things in 1st and 3rd edition. It's not a reworking of the rules, nor is it a new edition.

I can't imagine us taking a route in the future that would invalidate all the work we've already put into Golarion and our adventures. I strongly doubt, as a result, that we'll abandon the d20 system anytime soon. Anything is possible, I guess, but there's not much more to say on the topic today. Ask me again in a few years, I guess? Dunno.

It's good to hear some folks DID like Wrath of the Righteous. I had a blast developing it and helping to write it, and the story it told is one I'd been hoping to tell for years... so it was disappointing to hear that the loudest reactions were so negative. Thanks for the kind words.

Well what about wyverns or dragonkin? I would like a way to make a dragonkind-riding character in PFS at least if I can't do dragons.

That'd allow you to keep the story more self-contained, I guess. Wrath going to 10 felt appropriate for an AP whose results make broad sweeping changes to the world.

For what it's worth, I'm glad Wrath of the Righteous turned out how it did. It aligns so much with what I love in Pathfinder it feels like you wrote it just for me. :)

Speaking of it, what would Sarkoris' "flag" have looked like prior to the Worldwound opening? Like, had you done a write-up for it in The Inner Sea World Guide, what would you guys have drawn for the icon next to its essential stats?

Well what about wyverns or dragonkin? I would like a way to make a dragonkind-riding character in PFS at least if I can't do dragons.

Using Leadership to gain a wyvern (or a true dragon, for that matter) remains the best way to accomplish this. It's not really an option in PFS, which isn't really built for a dragon riding character. Not every character build is appropriate for PFS.

Have no idea. I've done precisely zero thought on the Sarkoris flag.

I'm sorry about mythic. I really like it and I think Wrath was one of the best APs you guys ever wrote. :(

Do you think it'll get better?

If we do another Mythic AP, I strongly suspect it won't go to tier 10. And at this point, I'm not really keen on even doing that. I'm not all that eager to go back to mythic rules except for monsters.
That said, mixing mythic and nonmythic material lets you present a certain gravitas, no?

I suppose.

I'll try to be better about the long posts. Thank you for letting me know that it was a problem. (Since I'm on my phone, I can't copy and paste...)

Also, regarding spoilers, one of my players had to stop reading this thread after having one of the succubus encounters (Kiranda) in WotR spoiled. So, I've been erring on the side of caution. Sorry. :)

1) Is there anything we can do to reverse your feelings about Mythic? I'm sorry if I'm focusing on this too much, but to me, Mythic looks very salvageable; a lot of Mythic's problems are with specific abilities that need tweaks, rather than with the entire system. My players are really enjoying Wrath of the Righteous, including Mythic, and I haven't even started tweaking the system yet. :D

2) Can you put in a good word for some minis?

Either of the "generic" changelings (B4 or ARG art)
An uncommon Red Mantis Assassin
More beautiful fey (dryads, nymphs, erlkings, etc.)
A mini for Mythic Seltyiel :)

3) Was there a specific inspiration for Seltyiel's look? While I'd much rather be Seoni, I always like seeing our iconic eldritch knight magus appear... /swoon

With all the stories about Val(eros) Kilmer, I was wondering if there were any interesting inspirations for Seltyiel.

Thank you! :)

Separate post!

How much influence and/or work do you have on the comics? Do you write the basic plot, or just check it for consistency? How do you interact with that line?

Thank you! :)

Yeah sorry about that, I and a couple of other players really fell in love with the idea of mythic, and they way it was executed (as an additional system that can be added to low and/or high level play).

Unfortunately this (IMO) made it pretty hard to balance, since it ended up working as a kind of multiplier, it worked fine for groups with a moderate amount of system masters, but could spiral out of control when players had high system mastery. I guess that is just the nature of the beast, one size fits all doesn't really work (of course reducing point buy, XP and mythic tiers is always an option).

As written mythic definitely works for monsters and can help GMs like me to create memorable encounters.

It is also a very nice option to replace high level options for those GMs/players who don't think that those high level spells fit their particular game.

With a bit of hindsight (I haven looked in that corner of the forum in quite some time, and I have discovered PFS several months ago and could not be happier) I think that WotR is thematically one of my favorite adventure paths, and I can recommend part 1 without hesitation (the writing and the NPCs really work for me). The other parts do benefit from some tweaking, but that is true for almost all things including my own cooking and similar epic enterprises.

Mythic adventures (a book I ended up buying several times for my players) is a good tool, but isn't all that easy to use, and could use some fine tuning. Since I create all the characters for my home group with my players, this really was not an issue for me, and I have always felt empowered to limit options and make rulings when things are unclear.
Giving the choice of mythic to the GM certainly will works for some groups.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you and a couple of designers find yourself with a couple of days of free time (after developing a books went exceedingly smooth and quick), we would certainly appreciated something like a 2-3 page pdf to attempt to balance the exploding numbers a bit.

I really liked the implementation of mythic in Iron Gods, and I am looking forward to trying the PFS scenarios with it.

---

I feel the need to apologize again, for all the drama in the WotR area, and hope, that you can find some solace in the fact, that the only reason that this exploded in the way that it did, is the fact that this meant a lot to a large number of people. The ability to make people care so much, shows that Paizo has a way to tell some very compelling stories, and create fun rules material.

My previous WotR group is on permanent hiatus (has nothing to do with mythic, I can't just get that group to play often enough) but I am actually still willing to give this another try.

Sometimes system work and sometimes they don't and I appreciate the fact, that Paizo is still willing to try even if it doesn't end up working perfectly every time. I feel that this was a learning experience for everybody involved, and that current products are already benefiting from the lessions learned.

---

So just keep up the good work, I have to go back to preparing Emerald Spire. I will be running it as a kind of Dungeon Run at a local convention this weekend, and while it is unlikely that they will reach your level... I prefer to be ready ^^

EDIT:PS I love the pawns, I recently managed to use PFS as a reason to buy all the Bestiary Boxes, the NPC box and the Inner Sea Box (love the fact, that I now have the ACG pregens as proper pawns, in my experience pawns have a very positive effect on new players).

Mythic...

I'm not James, but I imagine that the more people post and try to explain their viewpoint on the matter... the more he gets burnt out on it. Even being nice and constructive probably doesn't help because it just further points out big flaws in the system. So it's probably best to just drop it.

Anyway, James, I linked to you some pictures of a cave that was so large it had a jungle growing inside of it and asked if it sounds itching for a pre-historic adventure.

Has Paizo ever done such an adventure before?
Do you want to do an adventure module like that some day?
What about an adventure path?
If such an adventure path were to be in development, would others have to pull the development of said path out of your cold, dead, lizard claws before they got their warm blooded fingers anywhere near it?

A note on mythic and Wrath of the Righteous...

I have not yet run it but read it and I can't wait to run it.

The thing though is that I find I have to adjust the creature up in all of your APs...as I have a nice stat rolling system and such. The power level of the way I run is higher than the assumption that APs are written at. Which is fine...you guys have to have a base line to write at. Mythic though requires just more adjustment on the part of the GM which I think unfortunately caught too many people by surprise thus the harsh feedback.

Now a question...

Why are the evil countries not more active like Cheliax? They all for the most part seem to be content in their little corner of the worlds. Or am I missing something?

A few days ago I had asked about familiars/cohorts/animal companions, I had a follow-up question.

I had an idea for a Druid with a Faerie Dragon familiar, since you can't get it via animal companion I was think of doing the Leshy Warden archetype and was just curious how you would approach the issue of a player who wanted a cohort creature that leveled up in a class and also wanted to use share spells and scry on familiar. Surely there is a way to make the cohort work as a familiar.

I am actually playing a solo campaign where my GM (with us working on it together) allowed me to get a Pseudodragon cohort and turn him into a familiar, (Basically he is a cohort but all of the familiar stats overlap, similar to how gestalt works.)

For example, he actually has many skill ranks but would still use my ranks if they were higher, still uses my corresponding stats whenever mine would be higher than his, just like it states in the familiar rules, but he would still be leveling up as a cohort.

Is this a viable houserule? Is it something you would allow? Do you know of any better way to do it?

If you're allowed to speak on the subject, can you say anything about if there'll be more Pathfinder Legends audio dramas? I'm enjoying Rise of The Runelords at the moment, the team responsible did a wonderful job at adapting the story to the medium.

DC Comics or Marvel Comics?

Breaking the thread rules a touch by just throwing my positive vibes in about Mythic as well. I really love mythic I think you guys did a great job. Not perfect, but very very good, and importantly created a new niche in the game for those of us who enjoy that sort of stuff. I also really enjoyed WotR for what it is worth, awesome storyline.

So I hope you can take some encouragement from those folks like me and my group who just quietly enjoy your work immensely. My current campaign has me "mythicing" up Horranth!!

Another question. Will we ever find out what the Troglodytes were like before their descent to madness on Golarion, or anything about their culture at the time?

Perhaps an Adventure Path or module revolving around such? The stuff mentioned about them in the Bestiary implies they fill a similar niche as the Serpentfolk and Cyclops.

May I be a vocal one who notes that I love the mythic rules? Like, a lot? (Because I do. A lot.)

Anyway, if you could blend any two APs into a single massive story, which two would it be, and why?

I understand that this doesn't really work smoothly for the most part because of all the specifics of each AP. Point being that, presuming most things remain similar enough to have it vaguely recognizable as an over-arching plot, only to have two plots happening either back-to-back - with leveling adjustments to make it work - or in tandem.

I actually like flavor of mythic rules as well from what I have read at prd and I like plot of Wrath of Righteous from what I have heard so I'd like to see similar APs in future too

Anyhoo, questions:

1) So wait, were fetchlings born from human & shae pairings or from humans living on plane of shadow for generations or both? I'm bit confused about that

2) Do cavalier orders exist in game or are they mainly a mechanical thing? I mean, I can't remember reading much about how cavalier orders exist in Golarion setting, so they seem bit hard to place there and roleplay the pc as member of them...

So... Some off the wall questions.

1) Who is your favorate Marvel character?

2) DC?

3) What is your thought on Marvel doing a "52" and scraping the marvel universe for a combined world?

4) What is your favorite colour?

5) Did you see Gardians of the Galaxy? If yes, thoughts?

6) How well did the Rise of the Rune Lords update to PFS book do?

7) Are there any plans to update any other previous 3.5 AP to PF?

What are the chances of a "mythos revisited" book. I would love to see more about nightguants and denizens of Lang and how they interact with Galarion
