This was my wife and my first gaming convention and we loved it. We had a great time in the three scenarios we played in on Saturday and our fellow gamers were great. Thanks to everyone who helped to organize the pathfinder games.

The Year of the Shadow Lodge event was fantastic. I already can't wait for next year!

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

Thanks to everyone for providing a fun weekend of gaming! It was great running my mod for both groups and I greatly enjoyed seeing the folks I met last year and meeting new folks at the table.

1/5

As a final accounting of this weekends OwlCon, we ended up with 29 tables. I had thought we would have trouble filling the scheduled 24 tables, but we didn't. We went over by 5. Also we gave away about 14 new member cards. I had a fun time and wish to thank everyone who attended to either play, GM, or both. It would not have been such a success without you.

The Exchange 5/5

I would also like to thank silverhair2008, Dragnmoon, Rob, Adam, Jess, Wolfthulhu, Jason and the other volunteers (many whom I didn't get to meet) at OwlCon. There was a healthy turnout of players and it challenged the convention to contain all the attendees. Everyone stepped up and did their part, however. We were short a couple of GMs for the Special and some players came forward without flinching and ran the event cold. I think there were 29 players and only 12 pre-registered. The Rice University campus was wonderful and I felt very welcome in Houston. Next year I expect there will be a lot more PFS on the OwlCon schedule to accomodate a growing Society membership in Texas (and maybe I'll even get to play something).

A few comments:

Had a good time this weekend playing with folks. However, I wanted to address a few things that can hopefully be addressed for the next con.

1) The Con's restriction on preregistration for only 3 rounds was not good. As I was only actually there for four rounds of play it didn't affect me much, but if I had planned on being there all weekend, it would have potentially been frustrating trying to get marshaled into games on the fly every other slot. If the convention is only going to allow three rounds of pre-reg, I strongly suggest breaking out the Pathfinder preregistration to Warhorn.net like RPGA did to allow players to pre-reg (and pre-muster) for all of the games they are interested in playing in.

2) I preregistered for the con and signed up for the Special. Because of this I was charged for a higher cost badge from the con (Weekend Special badge). I am sure that there were walk-in players who got to play for no added cost. While I have no problem with paying extra for an event, I dislike that I paid extra essentially for being responsible and pre-registering.

3) I know the Pathfinder organizers were already displeased with the space alloted for both the regular games and the Special (in that it was distanced from the rest of the con, and not enough space was alloted), but I did want to reiterate it from a player.

4) I want to thank the two judges who ran "cold" for me at the con, although I apologize that I don't remember both of their names. Brian ran a game for several of us on Saturday afternoon after the con organizers were able to find space for us to play in the main gaming hall, and the other judge stepped up to run the Special for us even though he was scheduled to play. Thank you both very much.

This is very upsetting for me. Christi and I had both already played in the special and were willing to volunteer to run it (and did earlier in this thread). The special is an extremely good mod and those players that didn't get the joy of playing in it first have had that enjoyment taken forever.

Were warhorn.net used to organize this may never have happened (nor would anyone have been charged extra since they wouldn't have scheduled games through the convention website). Having to arrive three hours early just to have a chance to get into half the games we want to play is horrible. It's even worse for people that come from out of town (Virginia and Michigan, anyone?) or have to work the afternoon of the convention.

That being said, we had an extremely enjoyable time for the second year in a row. Owlcon is a very nice convention and is run/attended by some of the best gamers I've ever met. We look forward to attending again next year provided that some other method is used for scheduling (warhorn or no). Thanks again to all who ran mods this weekend, and even to everyone who showed up to play. You guys are the real reason that we enjoy these conventions so much.

Hail to all who attended Owlcon this past weekend,

As de-facto leader of the infamous band known as 'Team Cheliax', I wanted to extend my thanks for a fun and well run convention.

I agree with some of the criticism levelled above (like the lack of ability to pre-reg for >3 events), but overall I thought Owlcon XXX was a ton of fun.

The quality of PFS gamers I encounter at cons continues to be strong. I met a couple of folks I'd really look forward to seeing at a table again, and played under a number of skilled GMs (including Stefan [who admits to not really having much to do w/ running or playing the Pathfinder system since his group refused to transition from 3.5] who did a damn fine job running Beneath the Silver Tarn).

Seeing Dougdoug and Dragnmoon and Adam Daigle again was cool, and it was nice to meet Silverhair and the rest of the Houston PFS bunch.

The weather was amazing (for Houston), and Rice is a clean university in a very nice area of the city. It felt safe and inviting, and the individual rooms for each game really helped cut down the 'noise bleed over' from other games going on in the same time slot.

Prize support was a welcome surprise, and Team Cheliax left with more books than we brought, so all was well.

This was DEFINITELY a con worth attending again, and I strongly recommend it to PFS fans in central Texas (and even beyond). Yes, 2/3 of Team Cheliax dwell in Northern Virginia, but they claim they'd come again...

and so should you.

Thanks for the games,

Marcus

I had a great time guys! Thanks for all the Fun, and thanks to the players in my 3 games! Sorry Doug that I kicked you out of my game..;)

I get to walk away with many fond memories, to include a great scene in Adams game.

Spoiler:
There I was balanced on a wall 15 ft. up fighting 2 Harpies all to myself while another keeps attacking me with flybys. The rest of the group is fighting on their own fighting 1 Harpy they seem to be having trouble with while I am fighting 3 on my own!

Confident in my ability to kill all 3 by myself *And confident in Adams terrible rolling* I continue to fight, taken the 2 down on the wall with the third on the ground just landed about 15 ft. away, 15 ft. down. I run doing a running, jumping, tumbling Charge against the harpy on the ground making both my Jump Check and Tumble Check and I swing...and roll a 1...DOH!!!!

Our group in the next slot didn't get to do any of that daring do because we had so many characters/companions/minions (14, some being large sized) that we didn't have any room to maneuver in. :)

I loved playing Roagh with a 2 CHA in that game.

And I always enjoy creeping folks out with the foot thing. :D

Even Zavega's a little creeped out by that. That takes work...

She died trying to keep Team Cheliax up - but that's what prestige points are for. That's what she gets for pretending to be a real cleric!

Jess,

I apologize again for that.
While I personally think that using suffocate on PCs in PFS is kinda a dick move, I feel responsible for the train wreck that mod became.

Team Cheliax's worst hour by far. (though we did get that Glabrezu)

I've learned from my mistakes. Not only will I have a friendly wizard cast Black Tentacles into my Ring of Counterspells as soon as I can, but I will also buy a potion of gaseous form. If I had had one then, that last battle might have gone by a LOT more smoothly (those roll 16+ to get your spell off attempts were crap).

It was nice playing with you, and I again apologize for the final outcome. It's unfortunate that the gold for the mod wouldn't even pay for a raise dead (you know Asmodeus would just LOVE to help bring you back ;) )

Oh goodness, no need, no need. We all run the risk. :) that's why I'm a miser with my prestige points, is all. Fortunately, Zavega almost had enough for two raises at the time of her unfortunate demise, so she still has some wiggle room.

That was just a VERY nasty setup for the battle, honestly. The oil of bless weapon was a good thing to remind us all of! I have it as a domain spell, but having the extra just in case is wise, I think! For the glory of Taldor! and all that. :D

Now I feel really bad about that. We were double booked on that slot somehow (and late for the slot due to the road closures), but you should have had my 10th level wizard available to cast black tentacles during that mod (and Christi's Cheliax barbarian to soak some of that damage). :(

Then again, as awesome as everyone says black tentacles is I don't think I've ever had it successfully grapple any serious threat. I'm getting to the point where I don't even want to cast it anymore (though I still memorize two every day).

As for road closures...yeah. I ended up going northwest to get southeast. Stupid marathon... X_X

The CMD? That should have been relatively easy, then.

Oh, I definitely meant for a level 10 wizard.

If you are talking about what I think you are talking about, a 10th level Wizzy would have needed to roll a 12 or better to get 27 with Black tentacles.

Considering that I usually need an 18 or higher with black tentacles I'm ecstatic for a DC 12. And, of course, once I make that 12 it goes down to 7.

I believe in our case the tentacles were CMB17.

Unless we made a mistake, I had to pass a caster level check to get off my dispel magic while caught in the damn thing:
10+17+3 = DC30
I was rolling 9(level)+5(stat) + d20....
so I needed a 16 on my d20 to succeed.

Not impossible, but damn hard.
And I failed it.
With two castings.
And a reroll.

Waddaya gonna do?

I was stunned the entire first combat and tentacled the entire last one.

I certainly didn't feel like I made an impact at all.

I could have easily fixed that too with dimension step. You're just going to have to allow this to be my fault. :)

I just finished posting all of the reporting sheets I had. However, I noticed that most of the GM's did not include their info on their sheets if they wanted credit. If you do then please let me know. Again, thanks to all who showed up and played or GM'ed. It was fun. See you all next year.

The ones from last weekend would still go towards your star rating. Some people may be interested in that.

That Said, You did not put in the Last game from Sunday, Jess should have that for you.

As the one who ran the Mod. Yea suffocate is a not a nice spell but you do get 4 saves before you die. Jess had bad luck. I had to follow the mod battle tacits. Yea but you did dismiss the Glabrezu or so the party thinks. Had fun running Team Cheliax Twice. Hope to see you at Gencon if you go.

Dick move really? 4 saves before you die? Ever play LG? Following mods suggested battle tactics? Think there is some room at the kiddy 4E tables. Besides 70% of PFS mods are horribly UNDER powered/threatening anyway. Sorry just sayin

Not many folks can claim to have won a biting contest with a glabrezu. :D

All Mighty Goatlord
Team Cheliax made a good showing but in our last outing into the worldwound we faced many dangers.

Many of us have gold to spend to divert our selves from this danger but what is the best/most efficient way to spend this gold.

As you know the team cleric part of team Cheliax got grappled and taken out of the entire last combat.
Solutions include:
Potions of gaseous form and an adventurers sash ~760
the cloak that allows dim door 1/day ~10000 (this is also a good Thalvish delivery device.
and Thalvish wants to get oiled up before every combat ~10 (as well as after combat festivities with the slaves)

All mighty Goatlord do you have any Ideas to avoid getting grappled by spell or beast.

Your student
Chot
Devil summoner and Harald of the Hammer for Team Cheliax

We will rise and rule again for Gencon 2011 this time with less grapple but just as much success.
