Pathfinder Kudos at Gen Con

I just wanted to jump on here and say thank-you to the great GMs I had for Pathfinder Society play this weekend. All three GMs were absolutely fantastic and made the organized play experience a good one. I do want to give special kudos to Azmyth, for being the single most entertaining and positive GM I encountered. Not to diminish my other GMs, but Azmyth really stood out from already elite company.

As someone who is looking to spearhead organized play in my area (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada), it was great to experience the best that organized play can be, and have that example for my own efforts.

Thanks to Joshua Frost and the whole Organized Play team for a great Gen Con!

Hey man keep me posted about your efforts to start a PFS group in Edmonton, I have 3-4 guys who are ready to play, but we are playing Kingmaker and gonna start Serpent's Skull. Plus I have great interest in the PFS since I write scenarios for them. I live in Sherwood Park, and the other guys are in Edmonton.

Will do! Good to know I've got one table going in. :)

I want to thank all involved and especially Tim Hitchcock for creating a terrific interactive event which had an exciting story, epic battles, and a fun finale. Code Black!

Well organized play, especially putting together tables. Calling in the tables by tier for the special made for smooth seating and little standing around.

Hopefully Paizo can continue to garner larger spaces (not too large lest we run into the Epic Echo). If banners can be hung from the ceiling of the room occupied this year, that might assist in breaking up the noise. Those of you on these boards with true expertise in such matters chime in.

Great time! Thanks again PFS and Paizo!

I want to thank all the great PLAYERS who showed up to play this weekend. As much as we need GMs and Volunteers to get these events off the ground, without players (new and old), there would be no event.

So with that, thank you to everyone involved with Pathfinder Society and especially the 62(?) players at my tables who made my (insane) weekend worth it! Huzzah!

Thank you very much Northron! It is my pleasure to play with such awesome players as yourself! It was an unexpected treat to meet and play Pathfinder with so many great players/people!

As one of those 62, I'd like to thank you for the excellent experience, even if it did cost my buddy his rogue. That'll teach him to listen to me! It was a blast, and a pleasure to meet you sir.

I've heard a lot of good things about people's experiences this GenCon, and saw good things every time I looked into that packed room. Everyone did a bang-up job, and definitely made me proud to be there and helping out while you guys made this an awesome Con just by showing up and being as dedicated as you were, players and GMs both. Thanks, guys, for making it a blast for those of us stuck behind the counter, too :)

It was a fun time! Azmyth and I had a great time at Gencon and we'll comment more about it on the podcast, but a special shout out (and apology) to the intrepid band of Pathfinders from Illinois in my Slot 8 run of Rebel's Ransom.

Regrettably, half of that table dived in to try out the new pregenerated characters in the Advanced Player's Guide in Society Play. Without a fighter in their squad, they managed to earn the dubious distinction of being the only Pathfinder Society TPK of Gencon 2010. :)

From what I heard though, there was a lot of TPT (Total Party Torture) ;)

And a lot of Total Party Fleeing, or so I heard.

I'd like to add my voice to the chorus of those who are saying that PFS at Gencon was amazing! In my experience, Pathfinder Society consistently provides quality adventures and GMs that blow away what you'll find at other events, even events like the Iron Player Tournament that have a lot of Iron GMs running tables. This year, my Gencon group and I played all five scenarios that we could possibly play with our characters (we're low-level), and we had a blast.

A special shout-out to Chris Mortika and Matt Morton, who distinguished themselves as the best among august company with some really great GMing that managed to keep the whole table extremely engaged and entertained. You guys rock--cheers!

Everything can't be perfect, though--I have a few words to say about Rescue at Aztlan Ridge which I'll take to another thread that I'll start in a few minutes. They aren't nearly strong enough to dull my enthusiasm for how great you guys made our Gencon experience, but I hope the feedback will be valuable.

Our Gencon group of four lives in different states and usually plays PFS only at Gencon, but after this year, we're very excited about some of the Shadow Lodge hints and teasers, and we may try to find a way to play some scenarios online as well (Play Play Play!).

Rock on,
~RE

I want to post a ditto on this one. I had fun playing and want to thank my GMs, but I had even more fun GMing. So thanks to the fantastic folks that sat at my tables and gave me one of my best convention experiences ever.

And frankly, GMing Shadow Lodge was easily a highlight of my entire gaming career so an even bigger thanks to Tim Hitchcock for chatting with me before the game.

As one of the players at the table that beet the Gorilla King in 2-02 without the suit, thank you all for my most memorable GenCon experience yet. Pathfinder keeps getting better all the time. Keep up the great work.

Thanks to all my players and for dealing with the last minute Pathfinder Society Classic scenarios. Thanks to my GMs, Kyle Baird and Russ Taylor for excellent experiences.

That was far from a one man show there. Everyone worked together. Distracting the gorilla, healing, providing flank, aid an other, etc. It dropped because of team effort. That battle couldn't have been beaten without everyone working together against it.

I have to say I greatly enjoyed the Pathfinder Society events at gencon. They were one of the Highlight's of the Con. My thanks to all the GM's and players who I gamed with. You will see more of Kurog the Barbarian at Gencon, and possibly events held near Chicago.

Thanks again!

I would like to add my praise to the GMs from this past Gen Con. Thanks to GMs Neil, Aaron, Zack, Jason, and Chad (even though he's a rotten Packer fan) for running great scenarios from Pathfinder's Organized play! The Friday Night Special Event was awesome also!

Thank you for putting on such great gaming events!

My group had a great time! Thank you Paizo for putting on the best play events of the Con (even through the grinder on Saturday night!)... hat is off.

I too would like to thank Paizo for running a very organized and enjoyable event. Cheers! I'm already looking forward to next year!

Ryan - Everyone in our group had a great time playing Shadow Lodge -- Definitely the PFS highlight and you ran a great table for us!

See you next year Matt when we can make fun of the Bears again :)

My GM'S were all good. The 2 I would like to call out specifically are Doug Doug for his Wednesday night game at the Hilton, and I can't remember the other guy's name. He ran #57 for us Friday morning and then he played #58 Saturday morning, though I did not get a table with him. They were both super awesome and have my thanks. Thanks to everyone who volunteered and helped Paizo make it a great Society experience.

Kyle, you introduced PFS to me (the alchemist) and my buddy (barbarian/bard) and I have to say, we got the bug. We are going to launch an agressive campaign to bring or increase the visibility of PFS to minneapolis. I hope to see yall again next year. Our bags are already packed.

I want to thank all the player I had over the long weekend. I way too many fond memories of the weekend and every event I ran had something to always make me smile. Even though I ran form table 26 every slot, other than Shadow Lodge, which was table 12.

I just can't wait for next year.

Glad I could be of service, please don't blame me if your bank account starts to drain from Paizo.com purchases...

And everyone else in this thread, please stop praising Doug Doug. It looks like we'll be heading to Atlanta next month, and I'm not sure if his head is going to fit in my car! ;-)

I'd like to echo all this feedback. I've been a fan of the Pathfinder system, but this Gen-Con was my first time playing PFS. We had a great time, and I'd especially like to thank you guys for trying so hard to seat all the people with generic tickets. Thanks!

What did people think of the room? I thought it was easier to hear people, even though we seemed more crowded together.

It was a little loud - but you can't complain about the location in the Convention Centre. Combined with rooms at the Marriot Downtown, it was the perfect location for Pathfinder events at Gencon, imo. Literally could not have been better.

Amusing note about that: Saturday afternoon, I'm running a team of Pathfinders through a villain's lair, and one of the team's rogues thinks it's really important to Bluff the bad guys who are likely listening in, to reassure them that there's no reason to hit the general alarm button. So she rolls ... a 1.

Awkward pause.

"Is there anything you want to do about that?" I ask.

"Like what?"

"Do you have a shirt you want to use?"

"What do you mean?"

So, I and a couple of other players explain about the reroll facton shirts, and she looks at her teammates and says, "Hold on a second," and runs out to the Paizo booth at the Dealers' Room, muscles her way to the front of the line with a Qadira shirt and $20 in her fist, and runs back to the table.

Where she rolls ... a 6. Which was actually good enough.

I really want to thank those of you with generic tickets for showing up so early that Josh started having Liz and I show up at 7:00 am to get ready for the day. I didn't really need an extra half hour of sleep! ;)

Seriously, it was great to see so many of you willing to stand there and wait for a *chance* to play. It really shows the enthusiasm of the PFS players. It was good to see that Josh was able to seat so many of you with the generic tickets and great to see so many players that were willing to play pre-generated characters to join in games that were not suited for their regular characters. Kudos to you all!

And also thanks to all for not tipping the chair I was standing on outside the room while trying to call people for the muster. I don't think it would have been pretty to prove the saying "the bigger they are..."

Hey Chris! That was my GF--she was very happy to get the ability to use her bluff skill more in that scenario than usual, particularly the other bluff she used on the final encounter. That was an extremely enjoyable session for all of us, you really did a great job bringing the NPCs to life (and you are now probably one of the only GMs who has needed to RP a laughing scorpion).

Also, the reroll from that shirt probably got the three of us Qadirans the second prestige at our next game as well, so she definitely found good use for it.

In retrospect, that was probably a mistake. A giant scorpion is a vermin, and vermin are immune to mind-affecting effects. Ah well; live and learn. (And I'm glad you guys enjoyed the session.)

Bamboozlingly, Laughing Touch is not a mind-affecting ability.

Laughing Touch:
Laughing Touch (Sp): At 1st level, you can cause a creature to burst out laughing for 1 round as a melee touch attack. A laughing creature can only take a move action but can defend itself normally. Once a creature has been affected by laughing touch, it is immune to its effects for 24 hours. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Charisma modifier.

A fellow in the Council of Thieves game I'm playing is also a Fey Sorcerer and has been the MVP by using it on every big scary creature we've found, including such highlights as undead, vermin, constructs, and an animated chain.

I'd like to thank Josh for seating me & my friends on Saturday after we arrived late to the muster. It was my only play slot, and Neil Shackleton had already requested that I be assigned to his table. There were no other open tables to seat my friends & I together, but Josh made it happen. He pulled Mark Moreland as our GM, who did a fantastic job bringing to life a scenario he had not been assigned to prep. All of us had a good time and my only regret was that I didn't get to play with Neil.

*blush*

I would love a chance to play at one of Yoda's tables. Pretty sure that would be a great choice for your only playing slot.

And I got to torment Bob J & all of the Akreds that session, so that was fun too.

It was pretty awesome seeing an average 200 players per slot, and I had a lot of people come by the HQ desk offering their praise on the Society at this years GenCon. Glad to see everyone had such an amazing time, I certainly picked a good year to make it my first GenCon! :)
