A question about Invulnerable Rager and Guarded Life.

Product Discussion

Hi,

First, APG is awesome, needed to be said again....

Now, Barbarians are now awesome. Built my first one last night (never did in PFRPG as weren't enough toys)

1 Fast Movement, Rage, H- Wpn Fcs: Great Axe, Power Attack
2 DR1/-, Lesser Beast Totem
3 Extreme Endurance, Extra Rage Power:Raging Vitality
4 DR2/-, Guarded Stance
5 Cleave
6 DR3/-, FireResist1, Beast Totem
7 Extra Rage Power: Guarded Life
8 DR4/-, Reckless Abandon
9 FireResist2, Extra Rage Power: Inspire Ferocity
10 DR5/-,Gtr Beast Totem
11 Greater Rage, Furious Focus
12 FireResist3, DR6/-, Come and Get Me
13 Extra Rage Power: Moment of Clarity
14 DR7/-, Superstition
15 FireResist4, Extra Rage Power: Clear Mind
16 DR8/-, Witch Hunter
17 Tireless Rage, Stunning Assault
18 DR9/-, FireResist5, Disruptive
19 Dreadful Carnage
20 Mighty Rage, DR10/-, Spellbreaker

Now this is full of goodnes (Actually has a HIGHER to hit than a fighter!) BUUUUTT

Ends up with DR 10/-, (DR20/- vs non leathal) how does this interact with Guarded Life? Assuming Whenever Barbarian is hit, subtract DR. Should remaining lethal damage drop him below O (Up to con score before death) 1pt per level converted to non-leathal. EG at negative 5 this is converted to 5 pts non lethal. Barb left at exactly 0 with 5 pts non lethal damage? Is that non-lethal subject to his DR when it’s converted from lethal?

Cheers.

I would say that it is not subject to DR as you aren't actually taking any more damage, you are converting damage you have already taken into a different kind of damage.

OK, so guarded life just delays dropping by 1 round. It doesn't leave you at 0 though does it? I interperet a 10th level Barb with 7 hp left who is hit and after DR is taken into account there was 14 points of lethal damage left. This was sufficient to leave the barbarian at -7 HP. Does Guarded stance convert ten points of that remaining 13 points that dropped him to non-lethal- leaving him with 3hp. Or does it merely convert the -2HP to non lethal- leaving him stable at 0?

But doesn't that mean, since you have more nonlethal than hp, that you immediately fall unconcious?

Which would thus mean, rage ends. ..and you lose at least 40 hp at your stated level 20. And then you're at negative, and bleeding. . .

Which means the raging vitality feat is even more attractive to a barbarian than before.

Still means you'd be unconscious though. Thus, any time Guarded Life can be used, you're going to be unconscious. Raging Vitality just makes it so that you aren't bleeding and dying in the process.

Personally, I prefer the mix of Guarded Life and Diehard.

Then you just don't fall unconscious ^_^ Becomes mighty difficult to kill the barbarian then!

I found guarded life worked really well against stuff with lot of small attacks. like claw claw bite. it and raging vitality are the only reason my barbarian lasted to lvl 8

Hopefully the barbarian is with someone who'll help him out when he's unconcious. I've had the fatal cascade in one 3.5 game for my barbarian character when the BBEG did his area of effect level thing that... end result, unconscious and oh wait... dead too since I was out of raging. Yes, Diehard is needed too. Basically all three is great, the ragining vitality not only from bleeding out, but heck, another +2 to con while raging? Awesome.

It would seem to me that invulnerable rager and guarded life work well together.

When incoming damage would drop you to 0 or less hp, a portion of the incoming damage is turned into nonlethal damage. An amount of that nonlethal damage equal to your level is then negated outright by your DR.

Seems pretty clear cut to me.

I think I may just try this with greater guarded life and see what happens.
